This volume offers a selection of critical essays on texts that can be broadly categorized as popular literature. The essays are inclined to question the idea of ‘the Canon’ and re-consider the divide between the canonical and the popular. As such, besides engaging in a serious critical reading of typical popular literary texts like "The Jungle Book" and "The Hound of the Baskervilles", the book also considers populist tendencies in literary classics like "Jane Eyre" and "Frankenstein". It will be of interest to young scholars and readers of popular literature, science fiction, detective fiction, genre studies, and culture studies. The volume’s contributors are: Anisha Ghosh, Arnab Dasgupta, Goutam Karmakar, Jaya Sarkar, Jaydip Sarkar, Madhuparna Mitra Guha, Mandika Sinha, Mitarik Barma, Pinaki Roy, Puja Chakraborty, Rajadipta Roy, Rupayan Mukherjee, Shirsendu Mandal, Shubham Dey.

We propose a solution to the measurement error problem that plagues the estimation of the relation between the expected return of the stock market and its conditional variance due to the latency of these conditional moments. We use intra-period returns to construct a nonparametric proxy for the latent conditional variance in the first step which is subsequently used as an input in the second step to estimate the parameters characterizing the risk-return tradeoff via a GMM approach. We propose a bias-correction to the standard GMM estimator derived under a double asymptotic framework, wherein the number of intra-period returns, N, as well as the number of low frequency time periods, T , simultaneously go to infinity. Simulation exercises show that the bias-correction is particularly relevant for small values of N which is the case in empirically realistic scenarios. The methodology lends itself to additional applications, such as the empirical evaluation of factor models, wherein the factor betas may be estimated using intra-period returns and the unexplained returns or alphas subsequently recovered at lower frequencies.

"The predictability of the market return and dividend growth is addressed in an equilibrium model with two regimes. A state variable that drives the conditional means of the aggregate consumption and dividend growth rates follows different time-series processes in the two regimes. In linear predictive regressions over 1930-2009, the market return is predictable by the price-dividend ratio with R2 11.7% if the probability of being in the first regime exceeds 50%; and dividend growth is predictable by the price-dividend ratio with R2 28.3% if the probability of being in the second regime exceeds 50%. The model-implied state variables perform significantly better at predicting the equity, size, and value premia, the aggregate consumption and dividend growth rates, and the variance of the market return than linear regressions with the market price-dividend ratio and risk free rate as predictive variables"--National Bureau of Economic Research web site
