In the narrative world of the gospel of Mark, Jesus, portrayed as a teacher, gives lessons on the theologia crucis on his way to Jerusalem (Mark 8,27-10,52). Following Jesus to the cross does not mean being crucified too, but rather - and this is the point of his lessons - reaching out to the lowest positions in the community instead of the highest ones. First, the ecclesiologica/ cons.equences of the death of Jesus are spelled out in contrast to the typical social structures of the Roman Empire, i.e. controlling others by actions of power (Mark /0,42-44). Jn the same way the christology of Mark turns the religious expectations of his time upside down: it is not the Roman emperor, in the context of the ruler cult presented as source of peace and salvation, who deserves the official title "son of god" (divi filius), but the crucified Jesus, as it is expressed by the Roman centurion after Jesus' death (Mark 15,39). So, the theologia crucis in Mark is deve/oped in contrast to the typical social and religious expectations of the Roman Empire in the Ist century.
