    This volume presents the critical perspectives of feminists, critical race theorists, and queer and postcolonial theorists who question the adoption of European norms in the postcolonial world and whether such norms are enabling for disenfranchised communities or if they simply reinforce relations of domination and exploitation. It examines how postcolonial interventions alter the study of politics and society both in the postcolony and in Euro-America, as well as of the power relations between them. Challenging conventional understandings of international politics, this volume pushes the boundaries of the social sciences by engaging with alternative critical approaches and innovatively and provocatively addressing previously disregarded aspects of international politics. The fourteen contributions in this volume focus on the silencing and exclusion of vulnerable groups from claims of freedom, equality and rights, while highlighting postcolonial-queer-feminist struggles for transnational justice, radical democracy and decolonization, drawing on in-depth empirically-informed analyses of processes and struggles in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. They address political and social topics including global governance and development politics; neo-colonialism, international aid and empire; resistance, decolonization and the Arab Spring; civil society and social movement struggles; international law, democratization and subalternity; body politics and green imperialism. By drawing on other disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, this book both enriches and expands the discipline of political science and international relations. Post-colonial theory is aimed at analyzing the various levels of colonial interactions from textual, figural, spatial, historical, political, and economic perspectives. This is never done focusing only on single regions or disciplines - it is rather the goal to work out the historical inter-dependencies and intertwining among the countries of the »South« and the »North«. Nevertheless, the term »post-colonial« resists an exact marking: It neither refers to a specific historical period nor to a concrete content or a clearly identifiable political program. This introduction opens up the vast and dynamic field of post-colonial theory formation via a critical debate of the writings by the three most prominent post-colonial voices - Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, and Homi Bhabha. The thoroughly revised and updated second edition especially takes a critical look at the new writings by Spivak and Bhabha, but also deals with the current discussions about globalization, religion, and decolonization in detail Die koloniale Beherrschung stellt ein wirkmächtiges Ereignis solchen Ausmaßes dar, dass es nicht verwundert, dass postkoloniale Studien aktuell zu den einflussreichsten kritischen Interventionen zählen. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen in textlicher, figuraler, räumlicher, historischer, politischer und wirtschaftlicher Perspektive zu analysieren. Der Fokus liegt dabei nie auf einzelnen Regionen oder Disziplinen - vielmehr wird versucht, die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Gleichwohl widersetzt sich der Begriff »postkolonial« einer exakten Markierung: Weder bezeichnet er einen spezifisch-historischen Zeitraum noch einen konkreten Inhalt oder ein klar bestimmbares politisches Programm. Diese Einführung eröffnet das weite und dynamische Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen - Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen zu analysieren und dabei die sozio-historischen Interpendenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des "Südens" und des "Nordens" herauszuarbeiten. Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen - Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Die aktualisierte dritte Auflage unterzieht insbesondere die neuen Schriften Spivaks und Bhabhas einer kritischen Würdigung, setzt sich aber auch mit den gegenwärtigen Diskussionen und Globalisierung, Religion, Menschenrechte und Dekolonisierung auseinander.

    Colonial domination represents a powerful event of such magnitude that it is no surprise that post-colonial studies are currently among the most influential critical interventions. Post-colonial theory is aimed at analyzing the various levels of colonial interactions from textual, figural, spatial, historical, political, and economic perspectives. This is never done focusing only on single regions or disciplines - it is rather the goal to work out the historical inter-dependencies and intertwining among the countries of the »South« and the »North«. Nevertheless, the term »post-colonial« resists an exact marking: It neither refers to a specific historical period nor to a concrete content or a clearly identifiable political program. This introduction opens up the vast and dynamic field of post-colonial theory formation via a critical debate of the writings by the three most prominent post-colonial voices - Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, and Homi Bhabha. The thoroughly revised and updated second edition especially takes a critical look at the new writings by Spivak and Bhabha, but also deals with the current discussions about globalization, religion, and decolonization in detail. María do Mar Castro Varela (Dr. rer. soc.), Diplom-Psychologin, Diplom-Pädagogin und promovierte Politikwissenschaftlerin, ist Professorin für Allgemeine Pädagogik und Soziale Arbeit an der Alice Salomon Hochschule in Berlin. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen zu analysieren und dabei die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen – Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Die aktualisierte dritte Auflage unterzieht insbesondere die neuen Schriften Spivaks und Bhabhas einer kritischen Würdigung, setzt sich aber auch mit den gegenwärtigen Diskussionen um Globalisierung, Religion, Menschenrechte und Dekolonisierung auseinander.

    Die koloniale Beherrschung stellt ein wirkmächtiges Ereignis solchen Ausmaßes dar, dass es nicht verwundert, dass postkoloniale Studien aktuell zu den einflussreichsten kritischen Interventionen zählen. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen in textlicher, figuraler, räumlicher, historischer, politischer und wirtschaftlicher Perspektive zu analysieren. Der Fokus liegt dabei nie auf einzelnen Regionen oder Disziplinen - vielmehr wird versucht, die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Gleichwohl widersetzt sich der Begriff »postkolonial« einer exakten Markierung: Weder bezeichnet er einen spezifisch-historischen Zeitraum noch einen konkreten Inhalt oder ein klar bestimmbares politisches Programm. Diese Einführung eröffnet das weite und dynamische Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen - Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha.
