The self-perception of comparative studies has changed markedly in recent years. The classic areas and fields of activities face a reorientation towards cultural studies and an opening up for questions and issues relating to globalisation theories. This volume provides a survey of the history of general and comparative literary studies and at the same time takes stock of its current situation in a global context. The volume focuses on problem-oriented approaches that reflect the state of current research

From a leading figure in comparative literature, a major new survey of the field that points the way forward for a discipline undergoing rapid changes Literary studies are being transformed today by the expansive and disruptive forces of globalization. More works than ever circulate worldwide in English and in translation, and even national traditions are increasingly seen in transnational terms. To encompass this expanding literary universe, scholars and teachers need to expand their linguistic and cultural resources, rethink their methods and training, and reconceive the place of literature and criticism in the world. In Comparing the Literatures, David Damrosch integrates comparative, postcolonial, and world-literary perspectives to offer a comprehensive overview of comparative studies and its prospects in a time of great upheaval and great opportunity. Comparing the Literatures looks both at institutional forces and at key episodes in the life and work of comparatists who have struggled to define and redefine the terms of literary analysis over the past two centuries, from Johann Gottfried Herder and Germaine de Staël to Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak, Franco Moretti, and Emily Apter. With literary examples ranging from Ovid and Kālidāsa to James Joyce, Yoko Tawada, and the internet artists Young-hae Chang Heavy Industries, Damrosch shows how the main strands of comparison-philology, literary theory, colonial and postcolonial studies, and the study of world literature-have long been intertwined. A deeper understanding of comparative literature's achievements, persistent contradictions, and even failures can help comparatists in literature and other fields develop creative responses to today's most important questions and debates. Amid a multitude of challenges and new possibilities for comparative literature, Comparing the Literatures provides an important road map for the discipline's revitalization Frontmatter -- Contents -- Illustrations -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. World literature was long defined in North America as an established canon of European masterpieces, but an emerging global perspective has challenged both this European focus and the very category of "the masterpiece." The first book to look broadly at the contemporary scope and purposes of world literature, What is world literature? probes the uses and abuses of world literature in a rapidly changing world. In case studies ranging from the Sumerians to the Aztecs and from medieval mysticism to postmodern metafiction, David Damrosch looks at the ways works change as they move from national to global contexts. Presenting world literature not as a canon of texts but as a mode of circulation and of reading, Damrosch argues that world literature is work that gains in translation. When it is effectively presented, a work of world literature moves into an elliptical space created between the source and receiving cultures, shaped by both but circumscribed by neither alone. Established classics and new discoveries alike participate in this mode of circulation, but they can be seriously mishandled in the process. From the rediscovered Epic of Gilgamesh in the nineteenth century to Rigoberta Mench's writing today, foreign works have often been distorted by the immediate needs of their own editors and translators INTRODUCTION: Goethe coins a phrase -- PART ONE: CIRCULATION -- Gilgamesh's quest -- The pope's blowgun -- From the old world to the whole world -- PART TWO: TRANSLATION -- Love in the necropolis -- The afterlife of Mechthild von Magdeburg -- Kafka comes home -- PART THREE: PRODUCTION -- English in the world -- Rigoberta Mench(c)ð in print -- The poisoned book -- CONCLUSION: World enough and time

What is the role of literature in our global landscape today? How do local authors respond to the growing worldwide power of English and the persisting effects of the colonial systems that paved the way for globalization today? These questions have often been approached very differently by postcolonialists and by students of world literature, but over the past two decades, a developing dialogue between these divergent approaches has produced robust scholarship and sometimes fractious debate, as issues of language, politics, and cultural difference have come to the fore. Drawing on a wide variety of cases, from medieval Wales to contemporary Syria and Australia, and on works written in Arabic, Basque, English, Hindi, and more, this collection explores the mutual illumination that can be gained through the interaction of postcolonial and world literary perspectives

"In this new history of comparative literature, David Damrosch argues that the discipline is not dead or unmoored, as some critics claim, but continues to face some of the same questions that have shaped it since its beginnings in the nineteenth century. Damrosch traces the discipline's past in order to clarify its present tensions and concerns, and to rethink the fundamental terms of literary analysis, methods, and training that will guide the discipline's future. Literary studies today are in a time of rapid change, fueled by the expansive and disruptive forces of globalization. More works than ever circulate worldwide in English and in translation, and even national traditions are increasingly seen in transnational terms. How can scholars and teachers encompass this expanding literary universe? What linguistic and cultural resources do they need, and how can they best address the politics of a very uneven global field? The discipline of comparative literature has long sought to develop effective theories and methods of broad-based study, but ideas based on national canons in a handful of Western European countries no longer seem adequate even for the study of national literatures themselves. Comparing the Literatures integrates comparative, postcolonial, and world-literary perspectives and seeks common ground. Looking both at institutional forces and at key episodes in the life and work of comparatists who have struggled to define and to redefine the fundamental terms of literary analysis, from language to literature to theory to comparison itself, Damrosch offers a comprehensive overview of the history and current prospects of comparative studies in a globalizing world"--

"A transporting and illuminating voyage around the globe, through classic and modern literary works that are in conversation with one another and with the world around them. Inspired by Jules Verne's hero Phileas Fogg, David Damrosch, chair of Harvard University's department of comparative literature and founder of Harvard's Institute for World Literature, set out to counter a pandemic's restrictions on travel by exploring eighty exceptional books from around the globe. Following a literary itinerary from London to Venice, Tehran and points beyond, and via authors from Woolf and Dante to Nobel Prize-winners Orhan Pamuk, Wole Soyinka, Mo Yan, and Olga Tokarczuk, he explores how these works have shaped our idea of the world, and the ways in which the world bleeds into literature. To chart the expansive landscape of world literature today, Damrosch explores how writers live in two very different worlds: the world of their personal experience and the world of books that have enabled great writers to give shape and meaning to their lives. In his literary cartography, Damrosch includes compelling contemporary works as well as perennial classics, hard-bitten crime fiction as well as haunting works of fantasy, and the formative tales that introduce us as children to the world we're entering. Taken together, these eighty titles offer us fresh perspective on enduring problems, from the social consequences of epidemics to the rising inequality that Thomas More designed Utopia to combat, as well as the patriarchal structures within and against which many of these books' heroines have to struggle -- from the work of Murasaki Shikibu a millennium ago to Margaret Atwood today. Around the World in 80 Books is a global invitation to look beyond ourselves and our surroundings, and to see our world and its literature in new ways." --
