    Main description: Der vorliegende Band analysiert bisherige Bemühungen, ethnische Gruppen mit Hilfe archäologischer Funde voneinander abzugrenzen. Neben einem kurzen Rückblick auf die Geschichte dieser Interpretationen werden zentrale Begriffe (Volk, Kultur, Rasse, Sprache) untersucht sowie ethnologische und soziologische Konzepte von Identität herangezogen. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschreibt Brather vergleichend methodische Probleme ethnischer Rekonstruktionen für die Zeit zwischen Eisenzeit und Mittelalter und stellt ihnen kultur-, wirtschafts- und sozialgeschichtliche Interpretationen als alternative, quellennähere Erklärungsansätze gegenüber. Diese strukturgeschichtliche Analyse rückt die Aussagemöglichkeiten archäologischer Quellen gleichberechtigt neben die literarischer Texte

    Main description: This volume analyses previous attempts to delineate ethnic groupings with the help of archaeological finds. After a short review of the history of these interpretations, central concepts are examined (people, culture, race, language) and ethnological and sociological concepts of identity are adduced. Against this background, Brather undertakes a comparative description of the methodological problems of ethnic reconstructions for the period between the Iron Age and the Middle Ages, and contrasts them with interpretations from cultural, economic and social history as alternative approaches to an explanation which is closer to the sources. This structural historical analysis places the explanatory power of archaeological sources on a footing with those of literary texts

    This book assesses the importance of poetry for the Old Icelandic literary flowering of c. 1150–1350. It addresses the apparent paradox that an extremely conservative form of literature, namely skaldic poetry, was at the core of the most innovative literary and intellectual experiments in the period. The book argues that this cannot simply be explained as a result of strong local traditions, as in most previous scholarship. Thus, for instance, the author demonstrates that the mix of prose and poetry found in kings’ sagas and sagas of Icelanders is roughly contemporary to the written sagas. Similarly, he argues that treatises on poetics and mythology, including Snorri’s Edda, are new to the period, not only in their textual form, but also in their systematic mode of analysis. The book contends that what is truly new in these texts is the method of the authors, derived from Latin learning, but applied to traditional forms and motifs as encapsulated in the skaldic tradition. In this way, Christian Latin learning allowed for its perceived opposite, vernacular oral literature of pagan extraction, to reach full fruition and to largely replace the very literature which had made this process possible in the first place

    Abstract: Die früh- und hochmittelalterlichen Siedlungsbefunde und -funde aus dem Gewann „Mittelhofen“ bei Lauchheim im Ostalbkreis konnten zwischen 1997 und 2005 durch die Denkmalpflege in Baden-Württemberg archäologisch ausgegraben werden. Aufgrund großflächiger Dokumentationen konnte nahezu der komplette Siedlungsplatz erfasst werden. Dessen Auswertung erfolgte zwischen 2008 und 2014 als Dissertation durch die Verfasserin. Neben der Siedlungsentwicklung werden in dieser Arbeit die dafür relevanten Befunde und Funde sowie Phasenpläne vorgelegt. Durch eine quellenkritische Fundanalyse konnte eine platzinterne Keramikchronologie erstellt werden. Die Nähe zu einem nur wenige hundert Meter entfernten, ebenfalls nahezu komplett archäologisch dokumentierten merowingerzeitlichen Gräberfeld macht diesen Fundplatz besonders wertvoll für die Forschung.
    Die Siedlungsauswertung zeigt drei grundlegende Veränderungen innerhalb der strukturellen Ausprägung, die als Siedlungsstrukturphasen bezeichnet werden. Die erste merowingerzeitliche Phase bezieht siedlungsinterne Bestattungen an einzelnen Hofplätzen ein, anhand derer sich eine lockere Bebauung in Form von einzelnen Gehöften entlang des Flusses Jagst aufzeigen lässt. In einer zweiten Phase kommt es zum einen zur Aufgabe von Hofplätzen im Osten der besiedelten Fläche und zum anderen zu einer Verdichtung der Bebauung im übrigen Siedlungsareal. Zeitlich erstreckt sich diese Phase über die Karolingerzeit. Im Hochmittelalter erfolgen massive strukturelle Veränderungen, in deren Folge lediglich zwei große Hofareale bestehen blieben bis an den Übergang zum Spätmittelalter. Durch die archäologische Auswertung kann die vorstädtische Siedlungsentwicklung innerhalb der Siedlungskammer Lauchheims beurteilt werden, was aufgrund fehlender Schriftquellen auf anderen Wegen nicht möglich wäre

    This book assesses the importance of poetry for the Old Icelandic literary flowering of c. 1150–1350. It addresses the apparent paradox that an extremely conservative form of literature, namely skaldic poetry, was at the core of the most innovative literary and intellectual experiments in the period. The book argues that this cannot simply be explained as a result of strong local traditions, as in most previous scholarship. Thus, for instance, the author demonstrates that the mix of prose and poetry found in kings’ sagas and sagas of Icelanders is roughly contemporary to the written sagas. Similarly, he argues that treatises on poetics and mythology, including Snorri’s Edda, are new to the period, not only in their textual form, but also in their systematic mode of analysis. The book contends that what is truly new in these texts is the method of the authors, derived from Latin learning, but applied to traditional forms and motifs as encapsulated in the skaldic tradition. In this way, Christian Latin learning allowed for its perceived opposite, vernacular oral literature of pagan extraction, to reach full fruition and to largely replace the very literature which had made this process possible in the first place

Der vorliegende Band analysiert bisherige Bemühungen, ethnische Gruppen mit Hilfe archäologischer Funde voneinander abzugrenzen. Neben einem kurzen Rückblick auf die Geschichte dieser Interpretationen werden zentrale Begriffe (Volk, Kultur, Rasse, Sprache) untersucht sowie ethnologische und soziologische Konzepte von Identität herangezogen. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschreibt Brather vergleichend methodische Probleme ethnischer Rekonstruktionen für die Zeit zwischen Eisenzeit und Mittelalter und stellt ihnen kultur-, wirtschafts- und sozialgeschichtliche Interpretationen als alternative, quellennähere Erklärungsansätze gegenüber. Diese strukturgeschichtliche Analyse rückt die Aussagemöglichkeiten archäologischer Quellen gleichberechtigt neben die literarischer Texte. This volume analyses previous attempts to delineate ethnic groupings with the help of archaeological finds. After a short review of the history of these interpretations, central concepts are examined (people, culture, race, language) and ethnological and sociological concepts of identity are adduced. Against this background, Brather undertakes a comparative description of the methodological problems of ethnic reconstructions for the period between the Iron Age and the Middle Ages, and contrasts them with interpretations from cultural, economic and social history as alternative approaches to an explanation which is closer to the sources. This structural historical analysis places the explanatory power of archaeological sources on a footing with those of literary texts. Der vorliegende Band analysiert bisherige Bemühungen, ethnische Gruppen mit Hilfe archäologischer Funde voneinander abzugrenzen. Neben einem kurzen Rückblick auf die Geschichte dieser Interpretationen werden zentrale Begriffe (Volk, Kultur, Rasse, Sprache) untersucht sowie ethnologische und soziologische Konzepte von Identität herangezogen. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschreibt Brather vergleichend methodische Probleme ethnischer Rekonstruktionen für die Zeit zwischen Eisenzeit und Mittelalter und stellt ihnen kultur-, wirtschafts- und sozialgeschichtliche Interpretationen als alternative, quellennähere Erklärungsansätze gegenüber. Diese strukturgeschichtliche Analyse rückt die Aussagemöglichkeiten archäologischer Quellen gleichberechtigt neben die literarischer Texte. This volume analyses previous attempts to delineate ethnic groupings with the help of archaeological finds. After a short review of the history of these interpretations, central concepts are examined (people, culture, race, language) and ethnological and sociological concepts of identity are adduced. Against this background, Brather undertakes a comparative description of the methodological problems of ethnic reconstructions for the period between the Iron Age and the Middle Ages, and contrasts them with interpretations from cultural, economic and social history as alternative approaches to an explanation which is closer to the sources. This structural historical analysis places the explanatory power of archaeological sources on a footing with those of literary texts.     Presents case studies of the uses of etymology and wordplay in a number of medieval literatures.00In modern scholarship, etymology and wordplay are rarely studied in tandem. In the Middle Ages, however, they were intrinsically related, and both feature prominently in medieval literature. Their functions are often at variance with the expectations of the modern reader, in particular when wordplay is used to arrive at crucial answers or to convey theological insights. The studies in this book therefore carry important implications for our understanding of the reception of medieval texts. The authors show how etymology and wordplay in the Middle Ages often served as an impetus for meditation and as a route to truth, but that they could also be put to more mundane uses, such as the bolstering of national pride.
