    While conducting a broader inquiry into the many uses and ideas of natural signs in classical Greek culture, Barnouw (English and comparative literature, U. of Texas-Austin) began to suspect that the Greek understanding of the sign, of what makes the sign a sign, must have undergone a fundamental shift between the time of Homer and that of Hippocra From the Stoics, there follows a psychological tradition leading, through Hobbes and Leibniz, to Peirce and Dewey. These thinkers are drawn on to show the significance of the conception of thinking first articulated in the Odyssey. Homers work inaugurates one side of a philosophical conflict that persists, and opposition to pragmatism and Pragmatism can be discerned in prominent critiques of Homer and his hero analyzed and countered in this study.
