    "How are languages and cultures affected not only by the landscapes we live in, but also by the ways in which we make our way through them? Can railway fiction contribute to illuminating questions related to a nation’s history and identity? And what makes the stories about Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet trains different from railway literature with origins in other railway nations?

     

    Outside the country’s borders Russian and Soviet trains are likely to be associated with exotic journeys, particularly by the Trans-Siberian railway. This book explores other aspects of this vast empire’s railways. Through philological and cultural analyses, primarily of literary fiction, but also of popular cultural and documentary texts, the author demonstrates how and why the railway gradually became part of the Russian and Soviet peoples’ culture and national consciousness. She describes how metaphors and aphorisms related to trains were applied in propaganda, and subsequently became subject to linguistic play and literary deconstruction. And last, but not least this monograph shows how the railway forms a dark backdrop for literary representations of deportations, forced labour and prison camps.

Denne boken undersøker andre aspekter av dette vidstrakte imperiets jernbane. Gjennom filologiske og kulturfaglige analyser, primært av skjønnlitterære kilder, men også av populærkulturelle og dokumentariske tekster, drøfter forfatteren hvordan og hvorfor jernbanen gradvis ble en del av den russiske og sovjetiske befolkningens kultur og nasjonale bevissthet. Hun beskriver hvordan metaforer og aforismer relatert til tog ble anvendt i propaganda, og følgelig gjort til gjenstand for språklek og litterær dekonstruksjon. Og sist, men ikke minst viser denne monografien hvordan jernbanen danner et mørkt bakteppe for litterære representasjoner av deportasjoner, tvangsarbeid og fangeleirer.

     

    Boken henvender seg både til spesialister, russiskstudenter og lesere med allmenn interesse for Russland, språk, litteratur og kulturteori."

    LexArt. The words of painting is a dictionary of terms and concepts, which, from the artistic literature, in a synchronous approach of discourse and artistic practice, describe the painting as it is practiced in France, Germany, England and the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. These writings constitute the mental, intellectual and visual universe, which makes it possible to better apprehend the work of art, and shape the eye to better see. The purpose of this book is to highlight the stakes of uses resituated in different contexts in time and space, in a confrontation of ways of thinking, painting and watching. Seventy-seven essays address nearly two hundred and fifty notions. The articles respond to each other, and form an ensemble which, behind the alphabetical order of the dictionary, draws the contours of a new reading of the painting seen through the eye of the painter and the eye of the spectator. Indeed, the "speaking painting" does not only introduce the viewer into the painter's studio by showing him the "how to do", he introduces him into the painting itself, shows him what to see and how see. Les mots de la peinture est un dictionnaire de termes et de notions, qui, à partir de la littérature artistique, dans une approche synchrone du discours et de la pratique artistique, décrivent la peinture telle qu'elle se pratique en France, Allemagne, Angleterre et aux Pays-Bas aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Ces écrits constituent l'univers mental, intellectuel et visuel, qui permet de mieux appréhender l'œuvre d'art, et façonnent l'œil pour mieux voir. Le propos de cet ouvrage est de mettre en évidence les enjeux des usages resitués dans des contextes différents dans le temps et l’espace, dans une confrontation des manières de penser, de peindre et de regarder. Soixante-dix-sept essais abordent près de deux cent cinquante notions. Les articles se répondent les uns aux autres, et forment un ensemble qui, derrière l'ordre alphabétique propre au dictionnaire, dessine les contours d'une lecture nouvelle du tableau vu à travers l'œil du peintre et l'œil du spectateur. En effet, le « parler peinture » n'introduit pas seulement le spectateur dans l'atelier du peintre en lui montrant le « comment faire », il l'introduit dans le tableau même, lui montre ce qu'il faut voir et comment le voir.

    In crossed approaches, the themes developed in this book bring a new look at the forms, uses and stakes of artistic lexicography in modern times.

    In a perspective of circulation of concepts and practices, and permeability of the artistic borders, the word proves to be a precious laboratory of the practice of the artistic practice and a field of exploration of the cultural networks that cross and make Europe .

    Through the development of a language, books on art whose publications are growing in the north of the Alps from 1600, aim at the construction of a common knowledge for the use of painters and amateurs.

    Their many translations, published since the modern era, also testify to their role of diffusion agent in constant adaptation to the readership to which they are addressed. Understanding strategies and processes of invention and transfer of specific terminology to aesthetic expression becomes an important issue. Words, indeed, are not interchangeable. By succeeding or overlapping, even if they are contradictory, the different senses give thickness and subtlety to the concept.

    The journey of a notion into time and space also contributes to broadening our understanding of a cultural history between universality and identity within the artistic diversity that characterizes modern Europe. Dans des approches croisées, les thématiques développées dans cet ouvrage apportent un regard neuf sur les formes, usages et enjeux de la lexicographie artistique à l’époque moderne.

    Dans une perspective de circulation des concepts et des pratiques, et de perméabilité des frontières artistiques, le mot se révèle être un précieux laboratoire de l'exercice de la pratique artistique et un champ d'exploration des réseaux culturels qui traversent et font l’Europe.

    À travers l'élaboration d'un langage, les livres sur l'art dont les publications se multiplient au Nord des Alpes à partir de 1600, visent à la construction d'un savoir commun à l'usage des peintres et des amateurs.

    Leurs nombreuses traductions, publiées dès l'époque moderne, témoignent également de leur rôle d'agent de diffusion en constante adaptation au lectorat auquel ils s'adressent.     Fabulations nocturnes est un essai d’intercession. Ce n’est pas simplement un livre à propos du cinéaste Apichatpong Weerasethakul, bien qu’il se penche de près sur son œuvre. C’est plutôt un livre qui interroge en profondeur quoi d’autre pourrait être en cause dans la mise en place des conditions de collaboration entre deux genres – le cinéma et l’écriture. Ce projet collectif est animé d’un intérêt commun pour la pragmatique de la fabulation et son geste spéculatif générateur d’un peuple à venir. Les concepts d’écologie, de vitalité et d’opacité ont surgi de la rencontre avec le dramscape d’Apichatpong pour venir articuler un ethos de fabulation qui décadre l’expérience, recompose la subjectivité et défixe le temps.

    As the title of this treatise indicates, the topic is communication about quality. The author explores the general possibilities and limits of linguistic communication regarding the quality of grade school concerts, with specific concerts as her observational data. The crucial question is where to draw the line between what can be expressed verbally and what cannot when it comes to communicating about quality in this context. The point of departure for the author’s exploration is the noticeable tension that exists between different participants in The Cultural Rucksack (DKS) initiative and the school concert arena. Other researchers have explored this issue, but their contributions do not converge regarding the level of tension and the content of the different stances (cf. Borgen & Brandt 2006; Breivik & Christophersen 2014; Holdhus 2014). When Music Makes Sense aims particularly at clarifying the latter question, i.e., illuminating the specific content of the different stances. The lines of conflict and accord are made more apparent and palpable, and previous research is partly amended. This applies notably to the pupils own opinions on quality, as the treatise shows that they have more divergent opinions than what had been noted in previous research on DKS.

    Cet ouvrage explore un moment clef du développement de l’art moderne égyptien, lorsque sont définis les fondements d’une nouvelle pratique artistique au début du 20ème siècle. Basé sur un important travail de terrain mené en Egypte et sur des documents d’archives jusqu’ici inexplorés, il se centre sur une génération de peintres et de sculpteurs appelés les pionniers (al-ruwwad). Formés dans des institutions telles que l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts du Caire, leur production s’inscrit dans un mouvement de renaissance artistique et reflète les multiples interactions transculturelles entre l’Egypte et l’Europe. Cette étude offre ainsi un regard nouveau sur ces artistes qui ont posé les jalons du modernisme égyptien et met en lumière une production jusqu’ici peu étudiée. Tandis que l’on aborde aujourd’hui l’histoire de l’art dans une perspective globale à la lumière de circulations, d’échanges et de réseaux, elle offre un point d’ancrage permettant de mieux appréhender les dynamiques et les enjeux actuels de l’art contemporain au Moyen-Orient. In this book, Nadia Radwan explores a key moment of the development of modern Egyptian art, when the foundations of a new artistic practice are defined in the early 20th century. Based on field work and unexplored archival material, this work focuses on a generation of painters and sculptors commonly referred to as the pioneers (al-ruwwad). Trained in institutions, such as the School of Fine Arts in Cairo, their production is inscribed in a project of artistic renaissance and reflects multiple transcultural interactions between Egypt and Europe. This publication thus re-evaluates these artists that opened the path to Egyptian modernism and sheds light their yet understudied production. While art history is now approached in the perspective of circulations, exchange and networks, this book offers a background to a better comprehend the dynamics and stakes of contemporary art in the Middle East and intends to contribute to the cartographic constellation of a world art history.

Entre la création de Roméo et Juliette en 1867 et la fuite de Gounod en Angleterre en 1870, les deux amis partagent leurs joies et leurs préoccupations tant artistiques que personnelles.     This scholarly anthology includes articles from researchers associated with the project NECORE (Negotiating Values: Collective Identities and Resilience after 22 July) and other researchers whose work is closely associated with the project. They give us insights, opinions and sharp perspectives on not just 22 July, but also about Norway today, about values, identities and resilience in Norwegian society in the wake of the terror attacks.     L’humaniste et juriste milanais André Alciat (1492-1550) est connu pour être le créateur de ce qui deviendra, au cours du XVIe siècle, le genre de l’emblème, caractérisé par sa structure tripartite (inscriptio, pictura, subscriptio). L’Emblematum liber, publié pour la première fois en 1531, réédité à de nombreuses reprises, augmenté de poèmes supplémentaires et de nouvelles illustrations durant le XVIe siècle, contient plus de 200 emblèmes. Le présent commentaire étudie un choix de 75 emblèmes consacrés aux animaux. L’introduction aborde les différentes problématiques en lien avec les emblèmes et offre une synthèse des principales observations tirées de l’analyse du corpus. Le commentaire adopte une forme adaptée à ce genre hybride : pour chaque poème, il présente un choix de gravures issues des principales éditions, afin de mesurer l’évolution des motifs et leur adéquation au texte, puis une traduction française en prose des épigrammes latines, suivie d’un commentaire mettant en évidence la structure de la subscriptio, ses procédés stylistiques, ses sources d’inspiration et son interprétation symbolique.

    The fact that you are reading these words means you have already stepped over the threshold of a collection of what the author calls reflexive études. Here, the author is expanding on the word étude as it is used in music’s most ‘classical’ department, where it denotes a practice piece designed to address an isolated problem of musical technique, and transforms it to serve as a practical thought exercise for the (theatre) field as a whole. The reflexive étude therefore serves as a practical-theoretical exercise in trying to think one’s way to freedom from the (often) unconscious or semi-conscious assumptions and obstacles that the art actor constantly has to contend with. Implicit here is the notion that thinking through also constitutes an exercise and that the art of thinking is inextricably associated with art in general. Like musical exercises, the reflexive études are characteristically specific: each focuses on practice relevant to something particular – perhaps one performance, an issue of acting technique, an acute theatre -sociological situation, or the question of what a theatre script can and should look like. The ambition is to develop what I have called a reflexive dramaturgy. This conception of dramaturgy does not limit itself to analyses of the theatrical text, or to the theatre’s arsenal of calculated stage effects, but is capable of expanding its reach to identify other kinds of action that exert a powerful influence, despite their being seemingly inconspicuous. In this sense, reflexive dramaturgy becomes a kind of theoretical practice that seeks to identify and articulate those actions which (reflexively) set the limits for aesthetic experience, but which are often insufficiently covered by the ways that art and theatrical art view themselves. Den som leser disse ordene, befinner seg nå allerede over terskelen til en samling av det forfatteren har kalt refleksive etyder. Ordet etyde utvides her fra musikkens mest ‘klassiske’ avdeling, hvor det betegner et øvelsesstykke innrettet mot å løse et isolert teknisk-musikalsk problem og transformeres til praktiske tankeøvelser for (scenekunst) feltet som helhet. Den refleksive etyden er derfor valgt som en praktisk teoretisk øvelse i å tenke seg løs fra de (ofte) ubevisste eller halv-bevisste forutsetningene og hindringene som en kunstaktør hele tiden arbeider i, og med. I dette ligger en forståelse av at det å tenke over også er en øvelse, og at kunsten å tenke uløselig henger sammen med kunst overhodet. Ambisjonen er å utvikle det forfatteren har kalt for en refleksiv dramaturgi. I dette ligger en dramaturgi som ikke begrenser seg til analyser av sceneteksten, eller av teaterrommets kalkulerte kunstneriske virkemidler, men som i tillegg evner å utvide sitt søk etter andre, og mindre iøynefallende, men ikke desto mindre virksomme, handlinger. Refleksiv dramaturgi blir slik en type teoretisk praksis som forsøker å lokalisere og artikulere de handlingene som (refleksivt) setter grenser for det estetiske, men som ofte selv ikke er tilstrekkelig del av kunstens og scenekunstnerens selvforståelse.

    This anthology presents research in theatre studies developed by a group of colleagues at the Department of Arts and Media Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The research is conducted through arts-based research and practical-theoretical teaching at the department. Theatre production is a central arts-and knowledge-creating field of work for students and teachers in theatre studies. The work is characterized by a dynamic relationship between body, text, visuality and sound, media methods and techniques and the relationship between professionals and students. Theatre production is a complex learning arena; it is both multimodal and developed in dynamic movements between experience, dissemination, response and reflection. There is a need for a rich range of strategies, methods and techniques. The anthology presents ten different inputs to theatre production. Laboratory with experimental methods is the framework for articles on scenography, sound, the body and text of the actor. Production processes setting the creative and reflective student in the centre is the frame for articles on dramaturgy, text processing, production phases and target group- oriented work. The role and function of the university teacher in supervision and assessment is themed in two closing articles. In discussing the different aesthetical inputs to theatre production the authors use examples, images and audio material. Denne antologien presenterer teatervitenskapelig kunnskap utviklet ved Institutt for kunst- og medievitenskap ved Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet. Artiklene er basert på kunstbasert forskning og praktisk-teoretisk undervisning ved instituttet. Teaterproduksjon er et sentralt kunst- og kunnskapsdannende arbeidsfelt for studenter og lærere i drama og teater. Arbeidet preges av et dynamisk forhold mellom kropp, tekst, visualitet og lyd, medienes metoder og teknikker og av relasjonen mellom fagforvaltere og studenter. Teaterproduksjon er en kompleks læringsarena; den er multimodal og den krysser mellom opplevelse, formidling, respons og refleksjon. Det er behov for et rikt utvalg strategier, metoder og teknikker. Antologien presenterer ti ulike innganger til teaterproduksjon. Laboratoriet med eksperimentelle metoder er ramme for artikler om scenografi, lyd, aktørens kropp og tekst. Produksjonsprosessen med den skapende og reflekterende studenten i sentrum er ramme for artikler om dramaturgi, tekstbehandling, produksjonsfaser og målgruppearbeid. Fagforvalterens rolle og funksjon i veiledning og vurdering tematiseres i to avsluttende artikler. De ti produksjonsestetiske inngangene drøftes med eksempler og bilde- og lydmateriale.

Or, son auteur a joué un rôle de premier plan dans la «bataille» romantique; il a continué sans interruption d'écrire pour la scène jusqu'à sa mort; refusant l'exclusive, il a pratiqué tous les genres. Il laisse un corpus officiel de soixante-six pièces, en réalité plus de cent si l'on comptabilise les textes non signés mais où sa collaboration est attestée.

    Cette œuvre s’inscrit dans un héritage, revendiqué ou implicite, de l’Antiquité à la production contemporaine: tragédie classique et néo-classique, comédie d’intrigue et de caractère, scène historique, drame bourgeois, vaudeville, mélodrame, proverbe... Elle en fait un usage complexe, entre emprunts, variations et détournements, en jouant de la contamination entre modèles «nobles» et modèles «mineurs».
