Second Corinthians is Paul's apology to the Corinthians for failing to visit them, using rhetorical persuasion in his letters, and appearing unapproved for the collection. The scholarly consensus maintains that 2 Corinthians is a conglomeration of letters due to its literary and logistical inconsistencies. Consequently, most interpretations of 2 Corinthians treat only parts of it. However, a different consensus is emerging. Fredrick Long situates the text within Classical literary and rhetorical conventions and argues for its unity based upon numerous parallels with ancient apology in the tradition of Andocides, Socrates, Isocrates and Demosthenes. He provides a comprehensive survey and rigorous genre analysis of ancient forensic discourse in support of his claims, and shows how the unified message of Paul's letter can be recovered. His study will be of relevance to Classicists and New Testament scholars alike. A rhetorical analysis of 2 Corinthians as ancient apology -- The rhetorical exigency of 2 Corinthians -- The rhetorical disposition of 2 Corinthians -- The rhetorical invention of 2 Corinthians -- The rhetoric of 2 Corinthians and the nature of Paul's theology

The use of file-sharing technologies, so-called Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks, to copy music files has become common since the arrival of Napster. P2P networks may actually improve the matching between products and buyers - we call this the matching effect. For a label the downside of P2P networks is that consumers receive a copy which, although it is an imperfect substitute to the original, may reduce their willingness-to-pay for the original - we call this the competition effect. We show that the matching effect may dominate so that a label's profits are higher with P2P networks than without. Furthermore, we show that the existence of P2P networks may alter the standard business model: sampling may replace costly marketing and promotion. This may allow labels to increase profits in spite of lower revenues.

Philosophy as Fiction reconstructs Proust's powerful, coherent and original outlook on knowledge, self-deception and self-fashioning. In addition, it explains why these ideas had to give rise to a work of art and not a philosophical treatise. Parts of the philosophy serve literary ends, with certain assertions forming part of the novel's intricate lace-work; and aspects of the aesthetics also serve philosophical ends, enabling a reader to engage in an active manner with an alternative art of living. In Switzerland, castration of lambs without Anaesthesia has been prohibited since 2001. Aim of this study is a comparison of methods and drugs regarding practicability and analgesia. Experiment 1: 276 lambs and 18 sheep were castrated under Lidocaine localanaesthesia (LA) with a Burdizzo clamp (BC) by students or experienced veterinary surgeons. In each group, half of the animals received Carprofen, the other half received saline. Two observers estimated the pain of the testicular region by palpation of the scrotum. The animals castrated by veterinary surgeons showed clearly less pain, as did the Carprofen treated adult sheep. Experiment 2a (2b): In 27 (30) lambs, the heart frequency and motion was recorded with a data logger mounted on the animal. 2a: Lambs which were locally anaesthetized with bupivacaine showed significantly smaller heart frequency in the first 24 h post operational compared to those anaesthetized with Lidocaine. 2b: Lambs were anaesthetized with Lidocaine. In addition, Carprofen or saline was applied subcutaneously. The animals receiving Carprofen showed a higher heart frequency in the first 24 h post operational. Experiment 3: 306 sheep were castrated with RR under bupivacaine local anaesthesia and checked for clinical signs of toxic side effects post castration. No signs whatsoever were evident.

Those who survive major earthquakes often report the occurrence of mysterious phenomena beforehand - unusual animal and plant behavior, lightning, strange clouds and malfunctioning electrical appliances. In fact these stories are legendary the world over. But are they merely legends? Are the many people who report them just superstitious or suffering from over-active imaginations?Earthquakes and Animals brings objective science to bear on these old legends. But this is not the suspect science associated with recent attempts to validate UFO sightings. The book places in front of the reader the simple laboratory evidence for the behaviour of animals, plants and objects when they are subjected to intense electromagnetic pulses. In many cases they behave in ways that have been recorded for centuries - and are still reported today - as earthquake-related.Written for both the general public and scientists, Earthquakes and Animals demonstrates experimentally a physical basis for the old earthquake legends. It also adds tantalisingly to the science of earthquake prediction and cautiously suggests a legitimate new field of study - electromagnetic seismology. Explained variance (R^2) is a familiar summary of the fit of a linear regression and has been generalized in various ways to multilevel (hierarchical) models. The multilevel models we consider in this paper are characterized by hierarchical data structures in which individuals are grouped into units (which themselves might be further grouped into larger units), and there are variables measured on individuals and each grouping unit. The models are based on regression relationships at different levels, with the first level corresponding to the individual data, and subsequent levels corresponding to between-group regressions of individual predictor effects on grouping unit variables. We present an approach to defining R^2 at each level of the multilevel model, rather than attempting to create a single summary measure of fit. Our method is based on comparing variances in a single fitted model rather than comparing to a null model. In simple regression, our measure generalizes the classical adjusted R^2. We also discuss a related variance comparison to summarize the degree to which estimates at each level of the model are pooled together based on the level-specific regression relationship, rather than estimated separately. This pooling factor is related to the concept of shrinkage in simple hierarchical models. We illustrate the methods on a dataset of radon in houses within counties using a series of models ranging from a simple linear regression model to a multilevel varying-intercept, varying-slope model.

This book examines some of the most prominent contemporary theories of compliance with international law. It is argued that these theories ultimately rely on some political philosophy and that therefore their strengths and weaknesses can be traced back to those of the respective philosophical background. The approach finally taken is based on some recent empirical and theoretical research undertaken and as such provides new insights to the major works of the authors that are at the core of the discussion. This paper shows how the Dutch Disease has affected the Russian economy since the start of the transition in the early 1990s. Four symptoms have been detected, namely: 1) a real exchange rate appreciation, 2) a temporary improved economic situation, 3) an output decline in the non-booming-sector, 4) an export reduction in the non-booming-sector. An extended version of the Balassa-Samuelson model has been implemented to test symptom 1. Our results suggest a positive long-run cointegration relationship between the real exchange rate and the oil price. A 7% real appreciation is caused by a 10% oil price shock. Moreover, a 10% increase in oil prices leads to a 2% GDP growth, while a 10% real appreciation is associated with a 2.1% output decline. The total effect on GDP growth, considering the Balassa-Samuelson effect, confirms symptom 2. Finally, the domestic industrial production drops and high-tech and textile exports are crowed out. This indicates that the Russian economy is also affected by symptoms 3 and 4. We conclude that Russia's government should invest the tax revenues collected from the resource sector such that the structure of the economy becomes more diversified and less vulnerable to exogenous shocks.

The "Capacitated lot sizing problem with setup carry-over" is based ort the well known "Capacitated lot sizing problem" and incorporates the possibility of preserving a setup-state from a period to the following. Sox and Gao [2] decompose their formulation of the first one (GCLP1) by Lagrangian relaxation. For obtaining a heuristic solution of the GCLP1 they use subgradient optimization and a dynamic programming algorithm to solve the corresponding subproblems optimally. The present paper elucidates that this algorithm does not necessarily provide the optimal solution of the subproblem. Additionally, two improved approaches are presented. The first is an extension of the one proposed by [2] while the second is supplementary based on a slight modification of the underlying model

This book brings together an international team of leading translation teachers and researchers to address concerns that are central in translation pedagogy. The authors address the location and weighting in translation curricula of learning and training, theory and practice, and the relationships between the profession, its practitioners, its professors and scholars. They explore the concepts of translator competence, skills and capacities and two papers report empirical studies designed to explore effects of the use of translation in language teaching. These are complemented by papers on student achievement and attitudes to translation in programmes that are not primarily designed with prospective translators in mind, and by papers that discuss language teaching within dedicated translation programmes. The introduction and the closing paper consider some causes and consequences of the odd relationships that speakers of English have to other languages, to translation and ultimately, perhaps, to their "own" language. For those who wonder how ethics and psychology fit into economics, Allan Schmid's innovative text, Conflict and Cooperation, explores the importance of moral judgments in settling conflicts of interest, and the vast effects of human behavior on economic theories and models. Investigating the institutional 'rules of the game' - both formal and informal - and how these rules change to serve competing interests, this text addresses the substantive impact of alternative institutions and institutional evolution. An economic framework emerges, acknowledging human learning and preference change, bounded rationality, and disequilibrium. With its broad applications and numerous practice and discussion questions, this text will appeal not only to students of economics, but also to those studying sociology, law, and political science
