    Natural organic matter (NOM, or humic substance) has a known tendency to form colloidal aggregates in aqueous environments, with the composition and concentration of cationic species in solution, pH, temperature, and the composition of the NOM itself playing important roles. Strong interaction of carboxylic groups of NOM with dissolved metal cations is thought to be the leading chemical interaction in NOM supramolecular aggregation. Computational molecular dynamics (MD) study of the interactions of Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ with the carboxylic groups of a model NOM fragment and acetate anions in aqueous solutions provides new quantitative insight into the structure, energetics, and dynamics of the interactions of carboxylic groups with metal cations, their association, and the effects of cations on the colloidal aggregation of NOM molecules. Potentials of mean force and the equilibrium constants describing overall ion association and the distribution of metal cations between contact ion pairs and solvent-separated ions pairs were computed from free MD simulations and restrained umbrella sampling calculations. The results provide insight into the local structural environments of metalâˆ'carboxylate association and the dynamics of exchange among these sites. All three cations prefer contact ion pair to solvent-separated ion pair coordination, and Na+ and Ca2+ show a strong preference for bidentate contact ion pair formation. The average residence time of a Ca2+ ion in a contact ion pair with the carboxylic groups is of the order of 0.5 ns, whereas the corresponding residence time of a Na+ ion is only between 0.02 and 0.05 ns. The average residence times of a Ca2+ ion in a bidentate coordinated contact ion pair vs a monodentate coordinated contact ion pair are about 0.5 and 0.08 ns, respectively. On the 10 ns time scale of our simulations, aggregation of the NOM molecules occurs in the presence of Ca2+ but not Na+ or Mg2+. These results agree with previous experimental observations and are explained by both Ca2+ ion bridging between NOM molecules and decreased repulsion between the NOM molecules due to the reduced net charge of the NOMâˆ'metal complexes. Simulations on a larger scale are needed to further explore the relative importance of the different aggregation mechanisms and the stability of NOM aggregates.

    We present a mixed integer, multi-period, cost-minimizing carbon capture, transport and storage (CCTS) network model for Europe. The model incorporates endogenous decisions about carbon capture, pipeline and storage investments; capture, flow and injection quantities based on given costs, certificate prices, storage capacities and point source emissions. The results indicate that CCTS can theoretically contribute to the decarbonization of Europe's energy and industry sectors. This requires a CO2 certificate price rising to 55 € in 2050, and sufficient CO2 storage capacity available for both on and offshore sites. However, CCTS deployment is highest in CO2-intensive industries where emissions cannot be avoided by fuel switching or alternative production processes. In all scenarios, the importance of the industrial sector as a first mover to induce the deployment of CCTS is highlighted. By contrast, a decrease of available storage capacity or a more moderate increase in CO2 prices will significantly reduce the role of CCTS as a CO2 mitigation technology, especially in the energy sector. Continued public resistance to onshore CO2 storage can only be overcome by constructing expensive offshore storage. Under this restriction, to reach the same levels of CCTS penetration will require doubling of CO2 certificate prices. -- Carbon capture and storage ; pipeline ; infrastructure ; optimization

The scholarly consensus maintains that 2 Corinthians is a conglomeration of letters due to its literary and logistical inconsistencies. Consequently, most interpretations of 2 Corinthians treat only parts of it. However, a different consensus is emerging. Fredrick Long situates the text within Classical literary and rhetorical conventions and argues for its unity based upon numerous parallels with ancient apology in the tradition of Andocides, Socrates, Isocrates and Demosthenes. He provides a comprehensive survey and rigorous genre analysis of ancient forensic discourse in support of his claims, and shows how the unified message of Paul's letter can be recovered.     This book is designed to enable non-native English speakers to write science research for publication in English. It can also be used by English speakers and is a practical, user-friendly book intended as a fast, do-it-yourself guide for those whose English language proficiency is above intermediate. The approach is based on material developed from teaching graduate students at Imperial College London and has been extensively piloted.     In this study CO2 emissions embodied in Austrian international trade are quantified employing a 66-region input output model of multidirectional trade. We find that Austria's final demand CO2 responsibilities on a global scale are 38% higher than conventional statistics report (110 Mt-CO2 versus 79 Mt-CO2 in 2004). For each unit of Austrian final demand, currently two thirds of the thus triggered CO2 emissions occur outside Austrian borders. We then develop a 19-region computable general equilibrium model of Austria and its major trading partners and world regions to find that future Austrian climate policy can achieve the EU 20-20 emission reduction targets, but that its carbon trade balance would worsen considerably. Both unilateral EU and internationally coordinated climate policies affect Austrian international trade stronger than its domestic production.

    This study quantifies the CO2 emissions embodied in Austrian exports and imports, using a two region-input output approach (Austria and the rest of the world). The approach considers differences in production technologies between Austria and the rest of the world, concerning the CO2 coefficients (per unit of output) and the input-output structure (both are taken from data for EU 27). The CO2 emissions embodied in Austrian imports are considerably higher than CO2 emissions embodied in exports, i.e., CO2 for Austrian demand is leaking to the rest of the world. From 1995 to 2005 this negative balance of CO2 in trade has diminished in absolute terms, from 11 million tons (1995) to 6.4 million tons (2005), as CO2 embodied in exports has grown more rapidly than CO2 embodied in imports, thereby creating a huge potential for future carbon leakage.

    On April 19, 1995, a truck bomb exploded just outside of Oklahoma City's Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people. Within a matter of hours, the FBI launched the largest manhunt in U.S. history, identifying the suspects as Timothy James McVeigh and John Doe No. 2, a stocky twentysomething with a distinctive tattoo on his left arm. Eventually the FBI retracted the elusive mystery man as a bombing suspect altogether, proclaiming that McVeigh had acted alone and that John Doe No. 2 was the byproduct of unreliable eyewitness testimony in the wake of the attack. Womack recreates the events that led up to this fateful day from the perspective of John Doe No. 2--or JD, as he is referred to in the book. With his ironic and curiously detached persona, JD narrates--from a second-person point of view--his secret life with McVeigh, Terry Nichols, and others in America's militia culture as McVeigh and JD crisscross the Midwest in McVeigh's beloved Chevy Geo Spectrum.     The use of file-sharing technologies, so-called Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks, to copy music files has become common since the arrival of Napster. P2P networks may actually improve the matching between products and buyers - we call this the matching effect. For a label the downside of P2P networks is that consumers receive a copy which, although it is an imperfect substitute to the original, may reduce their willingness-to-pay for the original - we call this the competition effect. We show that the matching effect may dominate so that a label's profits are higher with P2P networks than without. Furthermore, we show that the existence of P2P networks may alter the standard business model: sampling may replace costly marketing and promotion. This may allow labels to increase profits in spite of lower revenues.

    In this paper, we show how the intersection of chains of multimodal cohesive ties with choices of relations among sequences of filmic units provides a strong foundation for constructing filmic narrative. Until now bridging the gap between narrative concerns and fine-grained analysis of complex multimodal artefacts such as films has been difficult: fine-grained analyses tend to lose themselves in the wealth of detail revealed and high-level narrative analyses are often pulled towards subjective interpretations. Our definition and use of the constructs of multimodal filmic cohesion and of logical sequential filmic relations establishes functional analytic categories anchored both below, in the fine-grained detail of film, and above, in the range of interpretations that they delimit. We propose this as one way in which we can move towards a more empirically-grounded notion of transmedial narration.     In this paper, we show how the intersection of chains of multimodal cohesive ties with choices of relations among sequences of filmic units provides a strong foundation for constructing filmic narrative. Until now bridging the gap between narrative concerns and fine-grained analysis of complex multimodal artefacts such as films has been difficult: fine-grained analyses tend to lose themselves in the wealth of detail revealed and high-level narrative analyses are often pulled towards subjective interpretations. Our definition and use of the constructs of multimodal filmic cohesion and of logical sequential filmic relations establishes functional analytic categories anchored both below, in the fine-grained detail of film, and above, in the range of interpretations that they delimit. We propose this as one way in which we can move towards a more empirically-grounded notion of transmedial narration.     In der Schweiz ist die Kastration von Laemmern ohne Anaesthesie seit 2001 nicht mehr erlaubt. Ziel der Untersuchung ist ein Vergleich verschiedener Methoden und Medikamente bezueglich der Praktikabilitaet und der analgetischen Wirkung beim Lamm. Versuch 1: 276 Laemmer und 18 Schafe wurden unter Lidocain-Lokalanaesthesie (LA) mit der Burdizzo-Zange (BZ) entweder durch Studenten oder durch erfahrene Tieraerzte kastriert. Je der Haelfte der Tiere wurde zusaetzlich Carprofen bzw. NaCl subkutan verabreicht. Durch zwei Beobachter wurde postoperativ die Schmerzhaftigkeit der Hoden mittels Palpation abgeschaetzt. Die durch Tieraerzte kastrierten Tiere und die mit Carprofen behandelten adulten Schafe zeigten deutlich weniger Schmerzen. Versuch 2a (2b): Bei 27 (30) Laemmern wurden Herzfrequenz und Bewegungsaktivitaet mit einem am Tier verbleibenden Datenlogger erfasst. 2a: Die mit Bupivacain lokalanaesthesierten Laemmer zeigten signifikant geringere Herzfrequenzen waehrend den Ruhephasen in den ersten 24 h nach der Kastration gegenueber den mit Lidocain lokalanaesthesierten Tieren. 2b: Die Laemmer wurden mit Lidocain lokal anaesthesiert. Zusaetzlich wurde Carprofen bzw. NaCl subkutan appliziert. Die postoperative Ruheherzfrequenz der mit Caprofen behandelten Laemmer war gegenueber der Kontrollgruppe erhoeht. Versuch 3: 306 Laemmer wurden unter Bupivacain-LA mit Gummiringen kastriert und postoperativ auf Nebenwirkungen ueberwacht. Es stellten sich keine Nebenwirkungen ein. In Switzerland, castration of lambs without Anaesthesia has been prohibited since 2001. Aim of this study is a comparison of methods and drugs regarding practicability and analgesia. Experiment 1: 276 lambs and 18 sheep were castrated under Lidocaine localanaesthesia (LA) with a Burdizzo clamp (BC) by students or experienced veterinary surgeons. In each group, half of the animals received Carprofen, the other half received saline. Two observers estimated the pain of the testicular region by palpation of the scrotum. The animals castrated by veterinary surgeons showed clearly less pain, as did the Carprofen treated adult sheep. Experiment 2a (2b): In 27 (30) lambs, the heart frequency and motion was recorded with a data logger mounted on the animal. 2a: Lambs which were locally anaesthetized with bupivacaine showed significantly smaller heart frequency in the first 24 h post operational compared to those anaesthetized with Lidocaine. 2b: Lambs were anaesthetized with Lidocaine. In addition, Carprofen or saline was applied subcutaneously. The animals receiving Carprofen showed a higher heart frequency in the first 24 h post operational. Experiment 3: 306 sheep were castrated with RR under bupivacaine local anaesthesia and checked for clinical signs of toxic side effects post castration. No signs whatsoever were evident.
