(2 A,S) (LK/PF: Krauter)

This book offers a variety of approaches to Zola's masterpiece, published amid considerable controversy in 1876–7. L'Assommoir (the tale of a Parisian washerwoman who after a hard life turns to drink and dies in abject poverty) is analysed as a social and political novel, as a representative work of literary naturalism, and in the context of its repercussions in the history of the novel. Professor Baguley investigates its complex and sometimes ambiguous themes, its literary structures and its technical innovativeness. He provides a synthesis of the best research and criticism of the novel together with insights into its interpretation. The biographical and historical context is given, and there is a guide to further reading 1. The social and political novel. The setting. The workers' condition. Politics in the novel. A woman's lot. Ambiguities -- 2. The 'naturalist' novel. The family tree. The 'experimental' novel. Naturalism -- 3. The novel: themes and techniques. In the labyrinth. Gervaise. Plot and structure. Themes and myths. Myths and genres. Language and technique. Gervaise's day -- 4. Repercussions

Douglas Bruster's provocative study of English Renaissance drama explores its links with Elizabethan and Jacobean economy and society, looking at the status of playwrights such as Shakespeare and the establishment of commercial theatres. He identifies in the drama a materialist vision which has its origins in the climate of uncertainty engendered by the rapidly expanding economy of London. His examples range from the economic importance of cuckoldry to the role of stage props as commodities, and the commercial significance of the Troy story in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida, and he offers new ways of reading English Renaissance drama, by returning the theatre and the plays performed there, to its basis in the material world 1. Towards a material theatre -- 2. Drama and the Age -- 3. 'City comedy' and the materialist vision -- 4. Horns of plenty: cuckoldry and capital -- 5. The objects of farce: identity and commodity -- 6. The farce of objects: Othello to Bartholomew Fair -- 7. 'The alteration of men': Troilus and Cressida, Troynovant, and trade

This is a 1992 study of writing of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, mainly in France, but also in Britain and Russia. Its focus is on the establishing and questioning of rational, 'civilized' norms of 'politeness', which in the ancien régime meant not just polite manners, but a certain ideal of society and culture. Within this general context, a series of familiar oppositions, between polite and rude, tame and wild, urban(e) and rustic, élite and popular, adult and child, reason and unreason, gives the initial impetus to enquiries which often show how these opposites interpenetrate, how hierarchies are reversed, and how compromises are sought. Polite society, like polite literature, needs and desires its opposite. The ideal is often the meeting of garden and wilderness, where the savage encounters the civilized and gifts are exchanged. Professor France points to the centrality, but also the vulnerability, in classical culture, of the ideal of 'politeness', and his discussion embraces revolutionary eloquence and enlightened primitivism, the value of hyperbole, and the essay as a form of polite sociability pt. 1. Excess and unreason -- 1. Hyperbole -- 2. Ogres -- 3. Myth and modernity: Racine's "Phedre pt. 2. Enlightened sociability -- 4., Polish, police, polis -- 5. The sociable essayist: Addison and Marivaux -- 6. The commerce of the self -- 7. The writer as performer -- 8. Beyond politeness? Speakers and audience at the Convention Nationale pt. 3. Confronting the other -- 9. Translating the British -- 10. Jacques or his master? Diderot and the peasants -- 11. Enlightened primitivism -- 12. Frontiers of civilization

This is a full-length study of the use of the dialogue form in Italy from the early sixteenth century until Galileo. Drawing on a wide range of sources, it examines the characteristics which determined the genre's unrivalled popularity in the period as a vehicle for polemic, debate, technical exposition and comic drama. More than simply an account of the development of an individual literary genre, however, the book is a contribution to the broader social and cultural history of the period. As representations of conversation, miniature dramas of persuasion, the dialogues of the Italian Renaissance constitute an extraordinarily rich - and largely untapped - source of information about the ideals and practice of communication in the early modern age 1. Problems of method -- 2. History and invention in the dialogue -- 3. The uses of the dialogue in sixteenth-century Italy: celebration and control -- 4. The uses of the dialogue in sixteenth-century Italy: commerce and courtesy -- 5. Castiglione's Cortegiano: the dialogue as a drama of doubt -- 6. The changing form of the Italian Renaissance dialogue -- 7. The theory and practice of the dialogue in Counter-Reformation Italy -- 8. From the 'girevole strada' to the straight and narrow path -- 9. From the open dialogue to the closed book

Galdos's four-part Fortunata and Jacinta (1886–7), the masterpiece among his almost 80 novels, tells the turbulent story of two women, their husbands and their lovers, set against the intricate web of dynastic alliances and class contrasts of Madrid in the 1870s. In this new critical introduction Professor Turner provides information on the history and social life of the times, and analyzes Galdos's theory of realism, his powerful use of imagery and metaphor to express the reality of social, mental and moral conditions, and the artistic merits of his narrative style. The book contains tables illustrating the complex family relationships fundamental to the structure of the work, and a chronological summary of the plot, as well as a detailed guide to further reading Benito Perez Galdos (1843-1920). Fortunata and Jacinta (1886-1887) -- 1. Social and historical contexts of a changing world. History, politics and private life. History-turned-story. Family tree and social class. Tertulias. Up the down staircase. Narration and social class. Money and manners. Old and New Madrid -- 2. Characters and configurations. Two-by-fours. Pyramids, triangles, pairs. Partners on the stair. Puntos negros. Triads on Pontejos Square. Who is sterile? Triangular dialectics. Imagined loves. Rebels and reformers -- 3. Metaphors of mind. The analogical matrix. Metaphors of mind. Villalonga's "new narrative" The realism of Fortunata and Jacinta

Modernist aesthetics have been identified with a sense of cultural crisis, defined by its distance from an ideal of unified consciousness. This original study of the problem of consciousness in modern poetry examines the struggle towards that ideal of 'unitary' experience, through close readings of British and Irish poets from Hardy and the Georgian poets, through Lawrence, Edward Thomas, Yeats, Eliot, MacNiece and Auden, to Ted Hughes. Underhill argues that while their poetry is both a critique and an expression of crisis, its tendency to emphasize inner states and subjective experience has drawn attention away from the socio-historical dimensions of the problem. Poetry, as contemporary theories of consciousness remind us, is itself a socio-cultural institution and is answerable to outer as well as inner forces. Underhill examines these problems and paradoxes, showing how the impossibility of any stable notion of the unitary in our century can in fact be seen as an opportunity for creative choice and freedom Introduction: the inward revolution -- 1. From Georgian origins to 'Romantic primitivism': D.H. Lawrence and Robert Graves -- 2. Strangers to nature: modern nature poetry and the rural myth -- 3. The 'poetical character' of Edward Thomas -- 4. 'Myself must I remake': W.B. Yeats -- 5. 'Here and now cease to matter': T.S. Eliot -- 6. The work of Man: Louis MacNeice and W.H. Auden -- 7. 'Nothing of our light': Ted Hughes

Why did France spawn the radical poststructuralist rejection of the humanist concept of 'man' as a rational, knowing subject? In this innovative cultural history, Carolyn J. Dean sheds light on the origins of poststructuralist thought, paying particular attention to the reinterpretation of the self by Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, and other French thinkers. Arguing that the widely shared belief that the boundaries between self and other had disappeared during the Great War helps explain the genesis of the new concept of the self, Dean examines an array of evidence from medical texts and literary works alike. The Self and Its Pleasures offers a pathbreaking understanding of the boundaries between theory and history Introduction -- Part one. Psychoanalysis and the self : introduction -- 1. Jane Austen has been read as a novelist of manners, whose work discreetly avoids discussing the physical. John Wiltshire shows, on the contrary, how important are faces and bodies in her texts, from complainers and invalids like Mrs Bennet and Mr Woodhouse, to the frail, debilitated Fanny Price, the vulnerable Jane Fairfax, and the 'picture of health', Emma. Talk about health and illness in the novels is abundant, and constitutes community, but it also serves to disguise the operation of social and gender politics. Behind the medical paraphernalia and incidents are serious concerns with the nature of power as exerted through and on the body, and with the manifold meanings of illness. 'Nerves', 'spirits', and sensibility figure largely in these books, and Jane Austen is seen to offer a critique of the gendering power of illness and nursing or attendance upon illness. Drawing both on modern - medical and feminist - theories of illness and the body as well as on eighteenth-century medical sources to illuminate the novels, this book offers new and controversial, but also scholarly, readings of these familiar texts Introduction: Jane Austen and the body -- 1. Sense, sensibility and the proofs of affection -- 2. 'Eloquent blood': the coming out of Fanny Price -- 3. Emma: the picture of health -- 4. Persuasion: the pathology of everyday life -- 5. Sandition: the enjoyments of invalidism
