The property-rights theory assumes that trade is non-contractible ex-ante and focusses exclusively on the allocation of property-rights. We derive foundations for this focus on property-rights by identifying scenarios where only one of the simple ownership structures is optimal even though trade is contractible. In these scenarios it is optimal: (1) not to sign a trade contract; (2a) to sign a partially enforced trade contract; (2b) such a combination of asset ownership and a trade contract might even achieve the first-best. For the purpose of identifying the optimal simple ownership structure, trade contracts can be neclected in scenarios (2a) and (2b).

These are mostly new systems that did not exist in western practices before they were utilized in Japan. The book also presents the Japanese ways of carrying out the globally popular cost reduction practices. It describes the strategic cost management conducted by top management through alliances between companies and/or between government and industry. It shows the functional cost reduction systems along the various phases of the product life cycle, as follows: R & D --> Product development --> Manufacturing --> Administration and indirect operations. It conducts some humanistic or behavioral aspects of Japanese cost reduction systems

THE THIRD SENTENCE Translated by Paul PerronMaupassant's short story, "Two Friends", is examined in order to test methodological tools and to hone them for their application in the analysis of narrative discourse, starting from the oral tale (Propp) and ending with the written tale instituted as literary genre. Complex procedures of textual production are identified: among which entire sequences as well as the "evenemential" level of narrative fade away in favor of its cognitive dimension. This semiotic investigation is accompanied by a challenge to certain conventions of literary criticism: dialogue, the locus

The traditional trade theory predicts that trade in goods perfectly substitutes for direct movement of factors. This equivalence between goods trade and factor movements, however, depends crucially on assumptions about the production. This paper establishes necessary and sufficient conditions which describe the relationship between goods trade and capital mobility in a 2x2x2 trade model with internationally mobile capital. It identifies possible ways of incorporating capital mobility into a multi-regional, multi-sectoral Computable General Equilibrium framework. The consideration of capital mobility leads to other allocational and distributional outcomes of policy scenarios if there exists differences in production technologies across regions, trade impediments, or distortions in product or factor markets.

This programmatic socio-rhetorical investigation approaches the Epistle of James as an instance of written deliberative rhetoric, and it seeks to ascertain the social texture of James 2.5, a rhetorical performance of language that in other contexts is explicitly attributed to Jesus. Utilizing the conventions of Greco-Roman rhetoric, Dr Wachob successively probes the inner texture, the intertexture, the social and cultural texture, and the ideological implications of the rhetoric in James 2.1-13. He analyses James' activation of antecedent texts in the LXX, common conceptions and topics in the broader culture, and also sayings in the Jesus tradition. He concludes that James emanates from the same milieu as the pre-Matthean Sermon on the Mount and shows James 2.5 to be an artful performance of the principal beatitude in that early epitome of Jesus' teachings.

Recently there has been much theoretical and experimental work on learning in games. However, learning usually means learning about the strategic behavior of opponents rather than learning about the game as such. In contrast, here we report on an experiment designed to test whether players learn a) the relevant features of the payoff structure of a 2x2 game (e.g. the best reply structure) and b) whether they play according to equilibrium predictions regardless of how question a) is being answered. Question a) is being tested by asking subjects to guess the payoff structure of their opponents in a repeated encounter and rewarding subjects for correct answers.

One of the most challenging issues of the 21st century is the impending separation of sex (in bed) and reproduction (under the microscope) as a result of recent advances in contraception and assisted reproduction. Many of the ethical and societal issues associated with these new reproductive technologies, notably intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), are raised in an unusual format - namely in dialogic form - which is both entertaining and pedagogically informative Production History --Act 1, Scene 1 --E-Mail Interlude --Act 1, Scene 2 --E-Mail Interlude --Act 1, Scene 3 --E-Mail Interlude --Act 1, Scene 4 --E-Mail Interlude --Act 1, Scene 5 --Act 1, Scene 6 --E-Mail Interlude --Act 2, Scene 7 --Act 2, Scene 8 --Act 2, Scene 9 --Act 2, Scene 10 --E-Mail Interlude --Act 2, Scene 11.

This book presents a modification of the dialectical method of Jean-Paul Sartre as a tool for critical discourse on aesthetic experience. Three practical demonstrations are offered of the modified progressive-regressive method: (1) on the original location and function of a medieval altarpiece, (2) on a theme in the literature of the Marquis de Sade, and (3) on a theory of consciousness in a novel by Samuel Beckett. The study concludes with guidelines on how the method may enhance critical discourse in teaching.

We decompose the generalized Lorenz order into a size and a distribution component. The former is represented by stochastic dominance, the latter by the standard Lorenz order. We show that it is always possible, given generalized Lorenz dominance between two distributions F and G, to find distributions H1 and H2 such that F stochastically dominates H1 and H1 Lorenz-dominates G, and such that F Lorenz-dominates H2 and H2 stochastically dominates G. We also show that generalized Lorenz dominance is characterized by this property and discuss the implications of these results for choice under risk.
