Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werther has received a great deal of attention from the scholarly community over the years. But until now it has never been thoroughly explored or evaluated. Deirdre Vincent examines the two versions of Werther in the context of Goethe's personal life in the intervening years. Goethe wrote and published the original version of this novel to great acclaim throughout Europe in 1774, drawing on the experience of a traumatic love affair he had had in Wetzlar in 1772. When the revised work was published some thirteen years later, the public saw the second version as little more than a reissuing of the original, and scholars over the past two centuries have persisted in this view. Vincent analyses Goethe's mode of writing and the role that literary creativity played for him during the first ten years or so in Weimar. She reveals how greatly the second version differs from the first, and challenges conventional explanations for the changes. Vincent sheds new light on Werther and on some of Goethe's other important works written between 1776 and 1789.

The devil is not fundamentally evil, God not essentially good. Faust, though he abandons his beloved to certain death, enters into dubious political schemes and economic swindles, and exploits war to his own advantage, is redeemed. These simple extractions from Goethe's Faust tell of the play's essential modernity, its complexity, and its tendency to confuse. "It is hard to imagine a masterpiece as widely recognized yet as little understood," writes author Jane K. Brown. Yet it is the play's very complexity, she continues, that "has allowed successive ages to read Faust in terms of their own deepest concerns In Faust: Theater of the World Brown offers a clearly written explication of the play that leads the reader through many levels of interpretation. Written over the course of 60 years that span most of Goethe's working life and the romantic period, the play bears the mark of Goethe's personal growth and development as an artist as well as that of the significant events of his day. Brown notes the influence of the French Revolution, the industrial revolution, materialism, the decline of religious belief, and the flowering of individualism. Faust portrays both the oppressiveness of the old social order and the spiritlessness, doubt, and alienation of the new Since Goethe's time, Faust has been as much a quintessentially German tale as it has been a story of and for the entire Western world. Brown addresses its reception Goethe's homeland, including the Second Empire's disturbing interpretation of Faust's relentless desire to achieve--and the ultimate forgiveness of his transgression--as a call to German expansionism during World Wars I and II. Faust's redemption at the play's end sets Goethe's version of the Faust legend apart from most others. Brown reviews Goethe's rich and problematic development of the story in the context of the Faust canon, particularly Christopher Marlowe's Dr. Faustus. Goethe's decision to present Faust, God, and Mephistopheles from conflicting perspectives is closely examined as evidence of his attempt to convey the difficulty of surety in the modern world, the ineffability of truth

A classic of world literature, Goethe's Faust has been neglected by English-speaking readers of the twentieth century. One reason for this is that there has been no readable English version of Goethe's philosophical and poetic drama, one that captures its life, satire, irony, humor, and tragedy. Now an award-winning translator and critic has supplied such a translation; it will enchant and enlighten students and general readers alike.Martin Greenberg re-creates not only the varied meter and rhyme of Faust but also its diverse tones and styles--dramatic and lyrical, reflective and farcical, pathetic and coarse, colloquial and soaring. His rendition of Faust is the first faithful, readable, and elegantly written translation of Goethe's masterpiece available in English. Complete with preface and notes, it offers as does none other the range and power of the original in a modern idiom

The book presents a series of interpretive readings of the "Römische Elegien", "Sonette", "Chinesisch-deutsche Jarhes- und Tageszeiten", several trilogies, and the shorter cycles of 1821, taking into account the variety of literary devices Goethe employs to link poems together into a cycle. The author examines Goethe's role in the history of the lyric cycle and, in stressing structural design, urges a reevaluation of the cycle's emergence as a standard poetic device.

The Goethe who began Faust was not the poet and thinker who completed it some sixty years later. The last thirty of those years span the writing of the second part, Faust II, a work that still puzzles critics today. John Gearey shows that the themes of Faust II are markedly different from those of Faust I, a shift that reflects dramatic changes in the world around Goethe and in his own thinking. Gearey traces the antecedents of the new mode of thought that is reflected in Faust II to the developments in science related to the literary and artistic movements of our own century. Specifically, he argues that Faust II treats the theme of evolution in new, wholly conscious ways, some parallel to later 'Darwinian' science. Indeed, the more or less scientific idea of evolution determined the literary form of Faust, a form at once appropriate to that idea and evidence of faith in it.

Pursuing special experiences that take them to the brink of permanent madness or death, men and women in every age have "returned" to heal and comfort their fellow human beings--and these shamans have fascinated students of society from Herodotus to Mircea Eliade. Gloria Flaherty's book is about the first Western encounters with shamanic peoples and practices. Flaherty makes us see the eighteenth century as an age in which explorers were fascinating all Europe with tales of shamans who accomplished a "self-induced cure for a self-induced fit." Reports from what must have seemed a forbidden world of strange rites and moral licentiousness came from botanists, geographers, missionaries, and other travelers of the period, and these accounts created such a stir that they permeated cafe talk, journal articles, and learned debates, giving rise to plays, encyclopedia articles, art, and operas about shamanism. The first part of the book describes in rich detail how information about shamanism entered the intellectual mainstream of the eighteenth century. In the second part Flaherty analyzes the artistic and critical implications of that process. In so doing, she offers remarkable chapters on Diderot, Herder, Goethe, and the cult of the genius of Mozart, as well as a chapter devoted to a new reading of Goethe's Faust that views Faust as the modern shaman.

Although some of the most distinguished German novels written since about 1770 are generally considered to be Bildungsromane, the term Bildungsroman is all too frequently used in English without an awareness of the tradition from which it arose. Professor Swales concentrates on the roles of plot, characterization, and narrative commentary in novels by Wieland, Goethe, Stifter, Keller, Mann, and Hesse. By pointing out that the goal in each work is both elusive and problematic, he suggests a previously unsuspected ironic intent. His analysis adds to our awareness of the potentialities inheren
