    Main description: With reference to selected examples, the volume highlights various aspects of literary studies since the Age of Humanism, concentrating on the history of its institutions, the contest between rival methodologies and the 'difficult'question of pluralism. Over and above the kind of perspective customarily taken on the discipline, the volume trains its sights on the academic precursors of literary studies in the earlier stages of Humanism. With reference to various examples it points up the creative tensions existing between influential individual scholars and the various 'schools'. A section of the book is given over to studies designed to trace the genesis of the present-day pluralism that many find so disconcerting. An attempt is also made to contribute to ongoing historically oriented reflection on method and methodologies via provisional résumés

    Main description: Die Untersuchung stellt ein Konzept vor, das es ermöglicht, literarische Positionen im Übergang von der Moderne zur Postmoderne präziser zu beschreiben. Modernität wird dabei als Ausdruck einer paradoxen Befindlichkeit verstanden: neuzeitliche Einheitsvorstellungen (metaphysischer, subjektbezogener und sprachlicher Art) scheinen rational nicht mehr haltbar, lebenspraktisch aber unverzichtbar zu sein. Moderne Literaten suchen daher nach neuen Totalitätsentwürfen, die als ästhetische und weltanschauliche Bewältigungsstrategien genutzt werden können. Diese Zusammenhänge werden anhand des OEuvres von Alfred Döblin (bis 1933) im Detail nachgezeichnet. Die bislang völlig vernachlässigten frühesten Werke des Autors werden dabei ebenso berücksichtigt wie der Erfolgsroman »Berlin Alexanderplatz«

    Main description: The study introduces a concept that makes it possible to give a more precise description of literary stances in the transitional phase from modernism to post-modernism. Modernity is understood here as the expression of a paradoxical state. Rationally, unitary notions central to the modern age (metaphysical, subject-related, linguistic) no longer appear tenable; in terms of the sheer practical necessities of life they are however indispensable. Thus modern authors have gone in search of visions of totality susceptible of being pressed into service as coping strategies, both aesthetically and in terms of Weltanschauung. These quandaries are delineated here with detailed reference to the work of Alfred Döblin (up to 1933), concentrating not only on his most successful novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz" but giving equal attention to his almost totally neglected early works

Die vorgenommenen Analysen haben ergeben, daß etwa 40% aller Wortspiele aus dem Polnischen ins Deutsche übersetzbar sind. Dieser Koeffizient weicht nur unbedeutend von Ergebnissen ab, welche zuvor bei der Analyse englisch-deutscher und französisch-deutscher Wortspieltranslate ermittelt wurden. - Im Anhang wird ein Autorenkommentar Stanislaw Lems zum Thema Wortspiel und Übersetzung präsentiert

    Main description: The author examines wordplay (punning etc.), its linguistic features and the variety of its manifestations largely in terms of the degree to which it can be rendered in translation. The corpus of examples is taken from 8 original works by Stanislaw Lem and their translations into German. It transpires from the analyses that some 40% of the instances of wordplay are translatable from Polish into German. This coefficient differs only slightly from results obtained previously by analyzing the translation of wordplay from English into German and French into German. The annex to the volume is a commentary by Stanislaw Lem on the subject of translating wordplay

    Main description: More than 100 years after the publication of Ferdinand Khull's editio princeps, the present volume is the first to make Konrad von Stoffeln's "Gauriel von Muntabel" available in a critical edition that takes full account of the debates on philological editing practice that have taken place over the last few decades. The text itself is preceded by detailed studies on the dating, localization and literary significance of this last Middle High German Arthurian romance in rhyming couplets, alongside a full description of the way the work has been handed down to us. The volume closes with notes on those passages of the work requiring comment, an index of names and a bibliography

    Main description: The study sets out from an inquiry into why in the late 19th and early 20th century literature turned more and more to the subject of death although this phenomenon was increasingly repressed and negated in public awareness. The bias of this inquiry is slanted towards the aesthetic procedures enabling literature to embark on this new engagement with the experience of finiteness and mortality. Interpretations of selected texts in German demonstrate the extent to which narrative structures are suffused, affected and changed by new structures of awareness
