    Das vielzitierte Musikalische in Jean Pauls Dichtung - seit 200 Jahren einer der wichtigsten Rezeptionstopoi in der Jean-Paul-Forschung, aber niemals überzeugend rekonstruiert - wird in dieser Arbeit in den Landschaften identifiziert und erstmals systematisch dargestellt. Im ersten Teil ordnet Julia Cloot zunächst Jean Paul in die Kunstästhetik des späten 18. Jahrhunderts genauer ein, während sie im zweiten Teil die als musikalisch empfundenen Erscheinungen im Erzähltext aufspürt und deutet. Dabei geht sie von zwei Thesen aus: zum einen erweisen sich die musikästhetischen Diskurse der Zeit um 1800 als Prätexte für Jean Pauls Romanschaffen, d. h. als geheime Texte, die den Suggestionen erklingender Musik zu unterlegen sind; zum anderen macht Musik in den Romanen Jean Pauls nicht nur die erzählte Zeit als solche erfahrbar, sondern spannt auch imaginäre Räume zwischen den Polen von Nähe und Ferne auf. Damit beschränkt sich Julia Cloot nicht nur auf die Analyse der Erzähltechnik, sondern sie untersucht die Wechselwirkung zwischen Musik und Sprache im Werk Jean Pauls.

Lucian's Alexander the False Prophet is the only literary testimony to a highly influential cult of the 'New Asclepios Glycon' which, as archaeological evidence continues to document, spread all over the eastern Mediterranean basin throughout the second and third centuries AD. This book offers an analysis of the complete manuscript tradition, a newly constituted text and a German translation. The extensive introduction deals with (1) the archaeological evidence, (2) the question of Lucian's historical reliability, (3) the reasons for Lucian's opposition to the oracle of Abonuteichos, (4) the institutions and the teaching of the cult at Abonuteichos. Furthermore, there is a commentary on all philological and historical questions and on those issues relevant to the history of religions. Grossardt now offers the first complete presentation of all literary sources of the Calydonian hunt, as well as of other adventures of its central hero Meleagros. The sources have been arranged by genre and their literary context has been taken well into account. The author gives special attention to the development of different versions of the legend. Individual poets, Grossardt observes, used the myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt as a functional element in a larger context or in conscious contrast to older texts. In reconstructing the prehistory of the legend and its religious background, the author shows that the Calydonian boar-hunt myth originally had the function of an aition for the cult of Artemis Laphria and that it was taken up by the epic tradition long before Homer

This book interprets all seven Sophoclean tragedies (5th century B.C.) as a whole, focussing on the aspect of individuals being guilty of not reaching proper conclusions about their own selves and their situation, although they possess the means and ability to do so. Chapter I offers exact definitions of the concepts employed in analyzing the tragedies. Chapters II-VIII each contain a detailed interpretation of one of Sophocles’ seven tragedies. Chapter IX ('Tableau’) presents the dramatic works within the context of Greek history of thought and politics of their time, while Chapter X sheds some light on how Sophoclean concepts were continued in the comedies of Menander. This study should not only prove helpful to scholars in the field of literary studies, but also to historians, philosophers and all those interested in history of thought and cultural history, since it examines in a fundamental way the thought of one of the most important poets of ancient Europe

An examination of the arguments recently put forward against the authenticity of the 12th letter yielded that it cannot be denied Ovidian authorship. Numerous parallels illustrate in particular Ovid's handling of his literary antecedents, notably Euripides and Apollonios. Intensive discussions are also given to questions of genre, epistolary form, influence of elegy and rhetoric, the letter's structure and its position in the collection. The appendix offers a convenient critical summary of the research on Ovid's Medea , together with an extensive commentary on the two fragments

Bacchylides, a contemporary of Pindar, was one of the nine \'classical\' lyric poets whose songs were collected, edited and studied by the scholars of Alexandria. Peter Abaelards Autobiographie, die Historia calamitatum, gehört zu den bekanntesten Texten des Mittelalters, insbesondere wegen der Liebesgeschichte zu Heloise, von der sie berichtet. In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurde über die Echtheit der Dokumente, die Abaelard und Heloise betreffen, so viel gestritten, daß die literaturwissenschaftliche Deutung des Werkes ganz in den Hintergrund trat. Aus dieser Sackgasse bietet das vorliegende Buch einen Ausweg. Es macht den berühmten Text zum Gegenstand einer Reihe exemplarischer Analysen aus der Perspektive von sieben verschiedenen Literaturtheorien des 20. Jahrhunderts (Rezeptionsästhetik, Foucault, Gender Studies, Rhetorische Stilanalyse, Literaturpsychologie, Kulturwissenschaft, Dekonstruktion). Diesen Analysen vorangestellt ist der lateinische Text der Historia calamitatum mit einer neuen, in modernem Deutsch gehaltenen Übersetzung. Damit wird die Historia calamitatum erstmals in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe erschlossen. Peter Abelard's autobiography, the Historia calamitatum, is one of the best-known medieval texts, especially because of the story of his love for Heloise which it recounts. In recent decades, there was so much controversy about the authenticity of the documents concerning Abelard and Heloise that the critical interpretation of the texts was relegated to the sidelines. The present volume provides a way out of this impasse. In it, the famous text is subjected to a series of exemplary analyses from the perspectives of seven different 20th century literary theories (aesthetics of reception, Foucault, Gender Studies, Rhetorical Stylistic Analysis, Psychology of Literature, Cultural Studies, Deconstruction). The analyses are preceded by the Latin text of the Historia calamitatum with a modern German translation. This is thus the first time that the Historia calamitatum has been presented in a bilingual edition.     Zum ersten Mal wird der Briefwechsel Fontanes mit dem Kunsthistoriker und Herausgeber des "Deutschen Kunstblattes" Friedrich Eggers veröffentlicht. Er führt den Leser in das bewegte literarische Leben in Berlin Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und gibt eine Fülle neuer Aufschlüsse über die Welt Fontanes, über die Personen, mit denen er zu tun hatte, und rückt mit Friedrich Eggers einen Mann ins Blickfeld, der bislang kaum Beachtung gefunden hat. Eggers, der das literarischer Vereinsleben prägte, spielte in den fünfziger Jahren für Fontanes literarischen und beruflichen Werdegang eine wichtige Rolle. Fontane hat Eggers zeitlebens skeptisch gegenüber gestanden, aber gleichzeitig von seiner Hilfs- und Aufopferungsbereitschaft profitiert Für die Kommentierung konnte der umfangreiche Nachlaß von Friedrich Eggers erstmalig intensiv genutzt werden, so daß die Edition Informationen bietet, die weit über die Beziehung der beiden Briefschreiber hinausweisen.

    Mit der »Germania generalis« wird hier der Text des Conrad Celtis (1459-1508) erstmals zusammen mit Übersetzung und Kommentar herausgegeben, der den humanistischen Diskurs um die deutsche Nation und den Versuch, diese historisch und geographisch zu definieren, maßgeblich angestoßen hat. In einem ersten Teil werden mit der Sichtung der Überlieferung sowie mit Untersuchungen zur Text- und Überlieferungsgeschichte die Vorarbeiten für die Edition geleistet. Im Zentrum des zweiten Teils stehen Studien zu Celtis' Deutschlandkonzeption. Sie gehen den Ursprüngen dieses zentralen Themas in Celtis' OEuvre ebenso nach, wie sie durch eine ausführliche Interpretation der »Germania generalis« seine zentralen Aspekte vorstellen. This is the first edition of Conrad Celtis' (1459-1508) »Germania generalis« to appear with translation and a critical commentary. The text is important for the major import it had on the discourse about the German nation and the attempt to define that concept in historical and geographic terms. The first part reviews the forms in which the text has been handed down and studies the history and transmission of the extant versions, thus preparing the way for the presentation of the present edition proper. The second part is largely made up of studies on Celtis' conception of Germany, exploring the sources of this central topic in Celtis' oeuvre and highlighting its crucial aspects with a detailed interpretation of »Germania generalis« itself.

    Jurij Karlovič Oleša war einer der bedeutenden Schriftsteller der frühen Sowjetzeit, jener in literarischer Hinsicht lebendigsten Periode, nämlich der 20ger Jahre. Tiefgehenden und vielseitigen Einblick gerade in diese neuere (wie auch die neueste) russische Literatur, ebenso wie belebteres Verständnis für literaturtheoretische Betrachtungsweisen vermittelte mir Professor Dr. Wolfgang Kasack, dem ich auch für die entscheidende Anregung zu der Dissertation und die wertvollen Hinweise während der Arbeit zu größtem Dank verpflichtet bin. Die Arbeit wurde gefördert durch ein Promotionsstipendium der Universität Köln, in dessen Rahmen zwei Aufenthalte in der Sowjetunion es erlaubten, in Deutschland nicht zugängliche Literatur miteinzubeziehen.

    The dissertation originally aimed to critically examine all of Dostoevsky's works, including journalism, in which Poland, i. Polish figures and historical persons or the Polish history and culture occur. However, because of the excessive scope of this text corpus, the proposed project had to be limited to the interpretation of Dostoevsky's literary works. As a desideratum of research remains the investigation of the relations between the literary and journalistic works Dostoevskijs persist. At the same time, however, the investigation had to be extended to a terminological-methodological examination of "foreignness" or "alterity research", because the previous inconsistent methods and diffuse terminologies did not permit a sufficiently differentiating analysis. Die Dissertation hatte sich ursprünglich zum Ziel gesetzt, alle Werke Dostoevskijs, einschließlich der Publizistik, kritisch zu untersuchen, in denen Polen, d.h. polnische Figuren und historische Personen oder die polnische Geschichte und Kultur vorkommen. Das geplante Vorhaben mußte jedoch wegen des allzu großen Umfangs dieses Textkorpus auf die lnterpretation literarischer Werke Dostoevskijs beschränkt werden. Als Desiderat der Forschung bleibt damit weiterhin die Untersuchung der Bezüge zwischen den literarischen und publizistischen Werken Dostoevskijs bestehen. Zugleich mußte jedoch die Untersuchung auf eine terminologisch-methodische Auseinandersetzung mit der "Fremdheits-" bzw. "Alteritätsforschung" ausgeweitet werden, denn die bisherigen uneinheitlichen Methoden und diffusen Terminologien erlaubten keine genügend differenzierende Analyse.

    Displaying his characteristic balance between sympathy and detachment, Vickery has first provided a concise, but richly detailed account of Lermontov's brief and tragic life. His approach is above all sensible - down-to-earth and fair. Lermontov was a romantic, really the only Russian poet who fully fits that designation. Vickery understands very well the romantic ethos, but he is no romantic him self. He treats with tolerant but ironic amusement the adolescent posturing of Lermontov's early Byronism. He is less tolerant of the frequent arrogance and even cruelty in Lermontov's behavior toward those close to him, especially women. On the other hand, Vickery recognizes Lermontov's genuine longing for intimacy and affection and credits his capacity for friendship and generosity. He also effectively traces all these conflicting im pulses in Lermontov's poetry.
