Anne Duden’s reputation as one of the most innovative writers of her generation, established in 1982 with the experimental stories in Übergang, was confirmed in 1985 by Das Judasschaf, a novel interweaving an individual’s anguish with the cultural trauma of the German past. In her acclaimed poem cycles Steinschlag (1993) and Hingegend (1999) Duden pushes the limits of language in densely metaphoric evocations of landscapes and places of political and personal remembrance, mixing lament for ruined nature with grotesque comedy, mystic vision with horror. Duden is a distinguished practitioner of short forms. Her essays display the same intense engagement with the visual arts as informs her narrative texts. Her deep interest in music is echoed in the musicality of short prose poems. This volume presents for the first time a comprehensive collection of approaches to Duden's fiction, poetry and essays by international scholars. Topics include: the ethics and aesthetics of Duden’s engagement with German history; her constructions of female subjectivity; her criticism of western dualistic thinking with its devaluation of the body and exploitation of nature; her position within a modernist tradition with roots in the Romantic Age; the visual arts and poetic influences such as Hölderlin and Celan; the dilemmas of translating Duden’s highly individual style. Tiefgehenden und vielseitigen Einblick gerade in diese neuere (wie auch die neueste) russische Literatur, ebenso wie belebteres Verständnis für literaturtheoretische Betrachtungsweisen vermittelte mir Professor Dr. Wolfgang Kasack, dem ich auch für die entscheidende Anregung zu der Dissertation und die wertvollen Hinweise während der Arbeit zu größtem Dank verpflichtet bin. Die Arbeit wurde gefördert durch ein Promotionsstipendium der Universität Köln, in dessen Rahmen zwei Aufenthalte in der Sowjetunion es erlaubten, in Deutschland nicht zugängliche Literatur miteinzubeziehen.

    Ivan Bunin's high opinion of his narrative "Temnye allei" (Paris, 1946) was rarely shared. In the field of view of the readers was too often the erotic topic - the criticism affected an unbiased reception of the book, whose coherence was only occasionally perceived. Abridged editions reinforced this effect in the episode. The study considers the "Temnye allei" for the first time in the interaction of external conditions and artistic intention, taking into account all simultaneously created, partly unpublished tales. The focus is on determining the genre of the book on the basis of extra and intratextlichen links such as structure, style and the central themes of love, death and memory. While a glance at the eventful history of its origins allows conclusions to be drawn about the book's intended construction, the critical examination of the history of editions and receptions illuminates the most diverse problems of acceptance in the perception of the book as a short prose link - and as Bunin's masterpiece. Ivan Bunins hohe Meinung von seinem Erzählband "Temnye allei" (Paris, 1946) wurde nur selten geteilt. Im Blickfeld der Leser stand allzu häufig die erotische Thematik - die diesbezügliche Kritik beeinträchtigte eine unvoreingenommene Rezeption des Buches, dessen Kohärenz nur vereinzelt wahrgenommen wurde. Gekürzte Editionen verstärkten in der Folge diesen Effekt. Die Studie betrachtet die "Temnye allei" erstmals im Wirkungsgeflecht äußerer Bedingungen und künstlerischer Intention, unter Berücksichtigung aller zeitgleich entstandenen, teilweise bis heute unveröffentlichten Erzählungen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Bestimmung der Genrezugehörigkeit des Buches auf Basis der extra- und intratextlichen Verknüpfungen wie Struktur, Stil und der zentralen Themenkreise Liebe, Tod und Erinnerung. Während ein Blick auf die bewegte Entstehungsgeschichte Rückschlüsse auf die geplante Anlage des Buches erlaubt, erhellt die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Editions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte die unterschiedlichsten Akzeptanzprobleme bei der Wahrnehmung des Buches als Kurzprosaverknüpfung - und als Meisterwerk Bunins.
