    Ein »artistisches Ganzes«? - Zum rhetorischen, stilistischen und poetologischen Charakter von Marx` Hauptwerk.Das »Kapital« gehört zu den bekanntesten und wirkmächtigsten Texten der politischen Ökonomie und modernen Philosophie. Über den zahllosen Kontroversen um Marx` Hauptwerk wurde bislang jedoch vernachlässigt, wie sorgfältig und durchdacht dieses gestaltet ist, wie intensiv es sich auf literarische Texte bezieht und selbst immer wieder mit poetischen und stilistischen Mitteln wie Metaphern oder narrativen Einschüben arbeitet und wie sehr der theoretische Ansatz des »Kapitals« von der Darstellungsweise dieses Textes abhängt.In 14 Beiträgen wird die Frage nach der Poetik und Ästhetik des »Kapitals« aus verschiedenen Perspektiven untersucht: vom Zusammenhang von Rhetorik, Polemik und Kritik über das Wechselspiel von Darstellung und Wissen, die Rolle von Erzählungen bis zum Verhältnis des »Kapitals« zur Erzählliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts, bevor an den Beispielen von Sergej Eisenstein und Alexander Kluge abschließend zwei produktive Rezeptionen von Marx` Text im 20. Jahrhundert betrachtet werden.Elisabetta Mengaldo, geb. 1977, ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Universität Padua.     Although the use of rhetoric to interpret NT texts, even Hebrews, is hardly new, here I employ an unfamiliar, and so unused, source of Greco-Roman rhetoric, the progymnasmata (preliminary rhetorical exercises). They provide excellent examples of genres that form the skeleton and substance of the argument in Hebrews. These progymnasmata consisted of twelve to sixteen exercises of increasing difficulty, among which I focus on “comparison” (σύγκρισις) and “encomium” (ἐγκώμιον). Progymnastic rhetoric states that “comparisons” are made out of the “headings” of the “encomium.” Thus, one comparison is in fact two encomia, for example, Jesus and Israelite priests, each figure described according to traditional encomiastic patterns.

    Paul seems neither to know anything about rhetoric nor to appreciate it. On the one hand he calls himself an "amateur in speech" (2 Cor 11.6). On the other hand he rejects rhetoric as part of the wisdom of the world (1 Cor 1-4). Such statements could, however, be a rhetorical strategy, which belongs to dissimulatio artis ("concealment of (rhetorical) art"). Thus, while Paul seems to dissociate himself from rhetoric, he might in some way declare himself for rhetoric. This article gives a survey of the realisation of dissimulatio and of its functions in pagan literature of antiquity and deals with the question whether this rhetorical means is to be found in Paul's letters. Paulus scheint von Rhetorik nichts zu verstehen und nichts zu halten. Zum einen nennt er sich einen "Amateur in der Rede" (2 Kor 11.6). Zum anderen verwirft er die Rhetorik als Teil der Weisheit der Welt (1 Kor 1-4). Allerdings könnten diese Aussagen eine rhetorische Strategie sein, die zur dissimulatio artis ("Verheimlichung der (rhetorischen) Kunst") gehört. Dann wäre die paulinische Selbstdistanzierung von der Rhetorik in gewisser Weise ein Bekenntnis zu ihr. Dieser Beitrag bietet einen Überblick zu Vorkommen und Funktion der dissimulatio in der paganen Literatur der Antike und geht der Frage nach, ob sich dieses rhetorische Mittel bei Paulus findet.

    In Lichtenbergs Sudelbüchern erfolgt die Beobachtung des Kleinen in der Natur und beim Menschen durch Wissensformen, die an der Schnittstelle von Rhetorik und Naturlehre entstehen. In seinen Sudelbüchern notierte Georg Christoph Lichtenberg 35 Jahre lang allerlei Einfälle, Ideenassoziationen, Gedankenexperimente und Versuchsanordnungen. Diese legendären Notizhefte bilden jedoch kein literarisches bzw. epistemisches Ganzes. Sie sind vielmehr ein Sammelsurium von Texten, in dem die »zwei Kulturen« aufeinandertreffen: die rhetorisch-poetische und die naturwissenschaftliche. Das Aufzeichnen besitzt dabei eine doppelte zeitliche Signatur, denn diese kleinen Textformen haben nicht nur eine mnemonisch-aufbewahrende Funktion; sie erweisen sich auch als Winke für künftiges Wissen. In ihrer Monographie geht Elisabetta Mengaldo dem für die Sudelbücher zentralen Zusammenhang von Rhetorik als traditioneller Kulturtechnik und Formen der Wissensanordnung an der Schwelle zwischen taxonomischen Modellen und modernen Beobachtungs- und Experimentalpraktiken nach. Dabei kommt dem »Kleinen« sowohl als Forschungsobjekt als auch als hybrider kurzer Prosaform eine geradezu emblematische wissensgenerierende Funktion zu.

    For many years, scholars have noted striking similarities between the account of Paul's visit to Athens in Acts and ancient accounts of the trial of Socrates. There have been at least five distinct proposals about the significance of these similarities, but each has substantial shortcomings. In this article, I argue that Luke's purpose is to place Paul's Areopagus speech in dialogue with the thought of Socrates as it is represented in traditions about his trial, especially Plato's Euthyphro and Apology.

    Approaches to ancient texts that focus exclusively on speech are inherently imbalanced. Far from simply an innocuous absence of language, silence can carry thundering significances. Yet, these meanings are not always obvious, and they can be especially difficult to interpret in texts, without attendant non-verbal cues such as facial expressions or gestures. How can New Testament interpreters best discern and describe the interwoven words, whispers, silences and subtexts of ancient narratives? In this article, I seek to build on my earlier narratological study of speech and silence, Silent Statements: Narrative Representations of Speech and Silence in the Gospel of Luke. There, I demonstrate how focusing on silences as well as speech enriches our understanding of the narratological dimensions of Luke's Gospel, including Lukan plot, characterisation, theme(s) and readerly experience(s). The obvious next step is to extend this work to the Lukan sequel. The guiding question of this article is therefore: how do speech and silence contribute to the narrative rhetoric of the Acts of the Apostles?

    Augustine’s sermon on ‘The Sacking of the City of Rome’ appears to lack the pastoral rhetoric that readers of his Confessions are so familiar with. This paper recovers the pastoral dimension of Augustine’s discourse by reading it alongside recent reinterpretations of barebacking subculture in queer theory. Maia Kotrosits argues that the rhetorical turn in the categorization of HIV/AIDS produced senses of asynchrony, and that barebacking responds to these by rooting the individual in an irreversible timeline of HIV-positivity. Barebacking can therefore be read as ‘pastoral’ rhetoric that resolves the agony of uncertainty. Augustine’s sermon is pastoral in this sense; Augustine imposes an historical ending that resolves the temporal anxiety he and his contemporaries felt after the sack of Rome in 410. Nevertheless, writing an ending – pastoral as that may be – can be a violent process if it negates or replaces the revolutionary work of making history.

    There is an unresolved tension between the parable of the Talent’s Matthean literary arrangement and readings proposed by modern scholars using socio-historical research to assess the parable’s reception by a first century audience. Drawing on metaphor theory and incorporating insights from the main interpretive trajectories found in modern scholarship on this parable, the author here proposes a new literary-critical reading that resolves this tension. He argues the parable’s rhetorical function within the Matthean narrative is to prepare the Matthean disciples to lead the universal expansion of the mission of the Matthean Jesus in the post-Easter period.

    Deriving its designation from the Greek word for ‘dog’, cynicism is likely the only philosophical ‘interest group’ with a diachronically dependable affinity for various animals—particularly those of the canine kind. While dogs have met with differing value judgments, chiefly along a perceived human–animal divide, it is specifically discourses with cynical affinities that render problematic this transitional field. The Cervantine “coloquio de los perros” has received scholarly attention for its (caninely) picaresque themes, its “cynomorphic” (Ziolkowski) narratological technique, its socio-historically informative accounts relating to Early Modern Europe and the Iberian peninsula, including its ‘zoopoetically’ (Derrida) relevant portrayal of dogs (see e.g., Alves, Beusterien, Martín); nor did the dialog’s mention of cynical snarling go unnoticed. The essay at hand commences with a chapter on questions of method pertaining to ‘animal narration’: with recourse to Montaigne, Descartes, and Derrida, this first part serves to situate the ensuing close readings with respect to the field of Animal Studies. The analysis of the Cervantine texts synergizes thematic and narratological aspects at the discourse historical level; it commences with a brief synopsis of the respective novellas in part 2; Section 3, Section 4 and Section 5 supply a description of the rhetorical modes of crafting plausibility in the framework narrative (“The Deceitful Marriage”), of pertinent (Scriptural) intertexts for the “Colloquy”. Parts 6–7 demonstrate that the choice of canine interlocutors as narrating agencies—and specifically in their capacity as dogs—is discursively motivated: no other animal than this animal, and precisely as animal, would here serve the discursive purpose that is concurrently present with the literal plane; for this dialogic novella partakes of a (predominantly Stoicizing) tradition attempting to resocialize the Cynics, which commences already with the appearance of the Ancient arch-Cynic ‘Diogenes’ on the scene.     This paper starts from the question of how the perception of an invective in Late Republican Rome is influenced, when it follows strictly the rules of the ars rhetorica. Since speaker and audience will have undergone the same rhetorical training, both sides have clear ideas about the rules of the genre, as they can be reconstructed from the surviving textbooks. At the same time, it can be shown on the basis of ancient evidence that insults were perceived not only more effective, but also as socially more acceptable if they arose unprepared from the situation – or if they gave exactly this impression. In the case of invective, thus, a speaker must make a special effort not to let his preparation become visible. For this purpose, he can, on the one hand, resort to the technique of artificial orality and apparent spontaneity and, in this way, take the usual dissimulatio artis to extremes. On the other hand, he can deliberately deviate from the rules of textbooks, resulting in a strong tendency of invective to a permanent innovation. This will be demonstrated by the example of some passages from Cicero’s speech pro Caelio from 56 BC.

The central question is which invective concern is claimed on the title page and how it relates to the rest of the text. The guiding idea is that the reconstruction of the rhetorical concern is possible by means of the genera doctrine of rhetoric and that it allows to describe potential patterns of reception in order to plausibilise potential effects. The following considerations are intended to be understood as a methodological contribution to the interpretation of the potential reception of invective writings of the 16th century against the background of the argumentation strategies articulated on the title page.

    Sowohl das Recht als auch die Literatur sind sprachlich verfasst. Als rhetorisch ist die adressaten- und wirkungsbezogene Geformtheit von Rechtstexten und literarischen Texten zu beschreiben. Dabei umfasst 'Rhetorik' mehr als den Einsatz bestimmter 'rhetorischer Mittel' (Elocutio-Rhetorik). Wie gerade die sog. 'neue Rhetorik' im Anschluss an Aristoteles geltend gemacht hat, ist die Argumentation wesentliches Element der rhetorischen Kommunikation. Zugriffsweisen auf die Rhetorik unterscheiden sich historisch, kulturell und bezüglich ihrer epistemischen Funktion. Daher argumentiert die neuere Rhetorik-Forschung dafür, rhetorische Produktion geschehensorientiert zu untersuchen und dabei ihrer Geschichtlichkeit Rechnung zu tragen. Der vorliegende Artikel gibt keinen allumfassenden Überblick, sondern fokussiert auf die Rhetorik im Recht und in der Literatur sowie auf rhetorische Dimensionen des Verhältnisses von Recht und Literatur. ; Both law and literature are composed of language. The forming of legal and literary texts according to their recipients and effects can be described as rhetoric. In this sense, 'rhetoric' includes more than the use of certain rhetorical devices (elocutio rhetoric). Especially as the so-called 'new rhetoric' has asserted following Aristotle, argumentation is a central element of rhetorical communication. Modes of access to rhetoric differ historically, culturally and in relation to their epistemic function. Therefore, newer research on rhetoric argues in favour of analysing rhetorical production as it occurs and at the same time accounting for its historicity. This article does not provide an all-encompassing overview, but focuses on rhetoric in law and in literature as well as on the rhetorical dimensions of the relationship between law and literature.

    Die literaturwissenschaftliche Studie widmet sich der Rhetorik in der „MORGEN- RÖTE“ von Jakob Böhme. Über eine Analyse der sprachlichen Mikrostrukturen werden die philosophischen Makrostrukturen des Textes erschlossen. Die Böhmesche Philosophie erwächst aus der sprachlichen Kunstfertigkeit des Werks. Die Rhetorik der „MORGEN-RÖTE“ lässt sich als stilistisch und nicht- argumentativ charakterisieren. Bezeichnend für den Text sind seine anhaltend variierenden Beschreibungsmodi, seine überwiegend visuell orientierte Bildlich- und empirisierende Exempelhaftigkeit. Weitere sprachliche Spezifika werden als „synthetische Rhetorik“ und „negative Rhetorik“ gekennzeichnet: Böhme vereinigt in seinem Erstlingswerk frühneuzeitliche Denkströmungen, Religion und Empirie, Offenbarung und Kognition uvm.; durch kalkulierte semantische Offenheiten werden Zirkulationen zwischen Topoi geschaffen und Erkenntnisgewinne durch den Leser angestoßen. ; This literary study is concerned with rhetoric in Jakob Böhme’s „MORGEN-RÖTE“. The philosophical macrostructures are investigated through an analysis of the language microstructures. Böhme’s philosophy grows out of the linguistic virtuosity of the work. The rhetoric of “MORGEN-RÖTE” can be characterized as stylistic and non-argumentative. The text is distinguished by constantly varying descriptive methods, predominantely visually oriented imagery and the use of empiricising examples. Further specifics of the language techniques are referred to as “synthetic rhetoric” and “negative rhetoric”: In his first work Böhme unifies early modern lines of thouhgt, religion and empiricism, revelation and cognition etc.; through calculated semantic blanks, circulations between topoi are created and insights are triggered in the reader.

Again and again, fascist rhetoric integrates populist elements such as the rhetorical figure of 'synecdoche' and the argumentation scheme named 'topos of the people' or - if the argumentation is fallacious - 'argumentum ad populum'. This article investigates both common features and differences between the two kinds of rhetoric. It explains in which sense fascist rhetoric is more radical than right-wing populist rhetoric, as it is the case with respect to the call for violence and the discursive construction of the enemy. It looks at the role of mass-communication and it discusses various forms of the phatic function of language, which plays an important role in fascist and right-wing populist rhetoric. On the whole, the text argues that neither fascist nor rightwing populist rhetoric can be seen as being internally homogeneous and unchanging.     Reiseberichte, besonders über Indien, sind durchzogen von sich wiederholenden Argumentationsmustern und -strukturen. Sie bilden damit ein prädestiniertes Untersuchungskorpus für die Topik. Anhand von rund 40 Indienreiseberichten, die sich als Kreuzungspunkt diverser um 1900 virulenter Diskurse darstellen und bisher kaum erforscht sind, rekonstruiert und analysiert Maria Hinzmann etwa 150 Topoi. Aus der Perspektive einer kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Literaturwissenschaft und mit Anleihen aus der Korpuslinguistik liefert sie eine bahnbrechende Neugrundlegung der Topik, deren transdisziplinäres Potential bis in die Digital Humanities reicht.

    Vor dem Hintergrund der digitalen Transformation und computergenerierter Literatur stellt sich die Frage: Findet sich im literarischen Text etwas, das über den reinen Akt der kombinatorischen Verknüpfung von sprachlichem Material nach bestimmten Regeln hinausgeht? Jan Hase nähert sich dieser Frage mit einer Ethos-Theorie des literarischen Schreibens, die entlang eines Lektürewegs von Roland Barthes über den Orpheus-Mythos und die griechischen Denker Platon und Gorgias zurück zu neusten literarischen Entwicklungen führt. Damit setzt er ein literaturtheoretisches Panorama in Szene, das so beleuchtet bisher selten im Zentrum stand.

    What is the meaning of using rhyme in poetry? What is its general function, its raison d’être? The aim of this paper is to propose a solution to this unanswered question, filling a remarkable gap in the studies in metrics and literary theory. After a survey of why historical explanation (rhyme as compensation for the low level of artificiality of the accentual metric system compared to the classic one) are unsatisfactory, a proposal based on theoretical analysis of the thought process triggered by rhyme is outlined. Forcing the poet to use a word often scarcely relevant to the context in which it is collocated, rhyme requires to make it relevant through a shift to symbolic language, towards a remote, metaphorical, sophisticated imagery, by means of all resources of figurative speech. This essential process (called here “figural function”) provides a very general explanation of the device of rhyme, linking it directly to the deep nature of the creative act and to the analogical and metaphorical dimension, where the essence of poetic language lies. ; Qual è il senso del ricorso alla rima in poesia? Qual è la sua funzione generale, la sua ragion d’essere? Scopo dell’articolo è proporre una soluzione a questa domanda ancora senza risposta, colmando una grave lacuna negli studi di metrica e teoria letteraria. Rilevata l’insufficienza, in tal senso, non solo delle funzioni comunemente attribuite alla rima, ma anche di una spiegazione storica più seria (la rima come compenso al livello troppo basso di artificialità del sistema metrico accentuativo rispetto a quello classico), la risposta è individuata analizzando, a livello teorico, il processo di pensiero innescato dalla rima. Costringendo il poeta a inserire una parola in genere poco pertinente al contesto, la rima richiede di rendere pertinente quella parola attraverso uno slittamento del discorso verso il metaforico, verso l’immagine lontana, analogica, ricercata, sfruttando tutte le risorse del parlar figurato.
