    The fifteen essays of Performing History glimpse the diverse ways music historians "do" history, and the diverse ways in which music histories matter. This book’s chapters are structured into six key areas: historically informed performance; ethnomusicological perspectives; particular musical works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" war histories; operatic works that works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" power or enlightenment; musical works that deploy the body and a broad range of senses to convey histories; and histories involving popular music and performance. Diverse lines of evidence and manifold methodologies are represented here, ranging from traditional historical archival research to interviewing, performing, and composing. The modes of analyzing music and its associated texts represented here are as various as the kinds of evidence explored, including, for example, reading historical accounts against other contextual backdrops, and reading "between the lines" to access other voices than those provided by mainstream interpretation or traditional musicology

Aus zeichentheoretischer Perspektive ließe sich jedoch entgegenhalten: »Nichts« ist flüchtiger als ein Zeichen und jene Vorstellung eine bloße Behauptung. Vor diesem paradoxen Hintergrund unternimmt die Monographie den Versuch, systematisch innersprachlichen Verfahren nachzugehen, die dazu eingesetzt werden, Informationen möglichst dauerhaft festzuhalten. Sie stützt sich dabei auf literarische Texte zwischen 1755 und 1821 sowie deren historische Ko- und Kontexte. Es gelingt ihr so, im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie der Semiotik erstmals eine Typologie vorzulegen, die weit über die Zeit um 1800 und die Literatur hinaus zeichenhafte Verfahren im Dienste der »Verewigung« zu beschreiben vermag. Semiotics of Eternalization At the interface of literary and cultural studies as well as semiotics, this monograph systematically examines intralinguistic procedures intended to record information for eternity. It succeeds, for the first time, in presenting a typology that describes semiotic procedures in the pursuit of »eternalization« that are not only limited to the period around 1800.     This article seeks to expound upon the first facet of CSNTM’s mission: to capture firsthand digital images of Greek New Testament manuscripts with high resolution digital equipment. By cooperating with likeminded libraries, CSNTM accomplishes the preservation and presentation of cultural heritage artifacts via the utilization of the advances of technology. Details of collaboration, digitization procedures, and preservation and presentation practices are explored, providing a glimpse into this world of artifact digitization. The article then turns to the consideration of ways to improve both digitization and the end user’s experience. While CSNTM engages libraries, archivists, researchers, and students, supportive partners serve to facilitate the work. All are essential, enabling CSNTM to preserve and provide access to timeless treasures.

    »Schrift besitzt die Macht, zu verewigen.« Diese Vorstellung begleitet Schriftzeichen seit ihrer Erfindung und hat bis heute nichts von ihrer Wirkmächtigkeit eingebüßt. Aus zeichentheoretischer Perspektive ließe sich jedoch entgegenhalten: »Nichts« ist flüchtiger als ein Zeichen und jene Vorstellung eine bloße Behauptung. Vor diesem paradoxen Hintergrund unternimmt die Monographie den Versuch, systematisch innersprachlichen Verfahren nachzugehen, die dazu eingesetzt werden, Informationen möglichst dauerhaft festzuhalten. Sie stützt sich dabei auf literarische Texte zwischen 1755 und 1821 sowie deren historische Ko- und Kontexte. Es gelingt ihr so, im Schnittfeld von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft sowie der Semiotik erstmals eine Typologie vorzulegen, die weit über die Zeit um 1800 und die Literatur hinaus zeichenhafte Verfahren im Dienste der »Verewigung« zu beschreiben vermag. Semiotics of Eternalization At the interface of literary and cultural studies as well as semiotics, this monograph systematically examines intralinguistic procedures intended to record information for eternity. It succeeds, for the first time, in presenting a typology that describes semiotic procedures in the pursuit of »eternalization« that are not only limited to the period around 1800. An extended English general survey and summary is included.
