    The presence of the Tiǧāniyya in Ethiopia is well attested since the mission of Enrico Cerulli in early twentieth century.Since then the studies about the presence and diffusion of this order in Ethiopia have been based mainly on oral sources and fieldwork. The aim of this study is to present a very first overview of Tiǧānī literature in Ethiopia as found in the recent missions of the Islam in the Horn of Africa Project.Local literary production shows that Ethiopian masters and authors aimed to show to their disciples and readers a broader picture of the ṭarīqa, counterbalancing the local dimension of devotional piety.

    Advocating a revised history of the eighteenth-century novel, Novel Cleopatras showcases the novel’s origins in ancient mythology, its relation to epic narrative, and its connection to neoclassical print culture. Novel Cleopatras also rewrites the essential role of women writers in history who were typically underestimated as active participants of neoclassical culture, often excluded from the same schools that taught their brothers Greek and Latin. However, as author Nicole Horejsi reveals, a number of exceptional middle-class women were actually serious students of the classics. In order to dismiss the idea that women were completely marginalized as neoclassical writers, Horejsi takes up the character of Dido from ancient Greek mythology and her real-life counterpart Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. Together, the legendary Dido and historical Cleopatra serve as figures for the conflation of myth and history. Horejsi contends that turning to the doomed queens who haunted the Roman imagination enabled eighteenth-century novelists to seize the productive overlap among the categories of history, romance, the novel, and even the epic

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources.     Modernity’s Mist explores an understudied aspect of Romanticism: its future-oriented poetics. Whereas Romanticism is well known for its relation to the past, Emily Rohrbach situates Romantic epistemological uncertainties in relation to historiographical debates that opened up a radically unpredictable and fast- approaching future. As the rise of periodization made the project of defining the "spirit of the age" increasingly urgent, the changing sense of futurity rendered the historical dimensions of the present deeply elusive. While historicist critics often are interested in what Romantic writers and their readers would have known, Rohrbach draws attention to moments when these writers felt they could not know the historical dimensions of their own age. Illuminating the poetic strategies Keats, Austen, Byron, and Hazlitt used to convey that sense of mystery, Rohrbach describes a poetic grammar of future anteriority—of uncertainty concerning what will have been. Romantic writers, she shows, do not simply reflect the history of their time; their works make imaginable a new way of thinking the historical present when faced with the temporalities of modernity

    Gianluca Delfino’s study is based on the assumption that Wilson Harris’s works as a whole show a remarkable unity of thought rooted in their author’s complex imagination. As a valuable contribution to Caribbean Literature and Philosophy, Harris’s imaginative approach to reality is discussed in relation to the categories of history and time with reference to several novels, from Palace of The Peacock to The Mask of the Beggar, with a special focus on The Infinite Rehearsal, Jonestown and The Dark Jester, spanning more than forty years of his vast literary production, encompassing critical perspectives ranging from African philosophy to Jungian readings through historiography and anthropology. As a result, the cross-cultural quality of Harris’s thought emerges as a healing outcome of the traumatic colonial encounter, bringing together elements of Amerindian, African and European origin in an ongoing dialogue with time, nature, and the psyche. The outcome of an extensive research into Harris’s world, Delfino’s study comes as a contribution to late Hena Maes-Jelinek’s critical enterprise by expanding philosophical and psychological readings, with the addition of anthropological perspectives that appeal to those who were captured by Harris’s intricacy and rescued by Maes-Jelinek’s illuminating interpretations. The attempt at the reconstruction of a unifying frame around Harris’s body of work suggests a new way of looking at one of the Caribbean’s most controversial authors.

    Die Theaterwissenschaft ist im Umbruch: Neue Forschungsgebiete, interdisziplinäre Verbundprojekte sowie aktuelle Entwicklungen in den performativen Künsten erfordern ein Überdenken methodischer Ansätze, zentraler Begriffe und Herangehensweisen des Faches. Die Beiträger*innen liefern interdisziplinäre Positionen zu methodischen Fragen und Verfahren aktueller theaterwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Schwerpunkte liegen dabei auf Erweiterungen der Aufführungsanalyse, neuen Theaterhistoriografien sowie der Institutionenforschung.     Modernity’s Mist explores an understudied aspect of Romanticism: its future-oriented poetics. Whereas Romanticism is well known for its relation to the past, Emily Rohrbach situates Romantic epistemological uncertainties in relation to historiographical debates that opened up a radically unpredictable and fast- approaching future. As the rise of periodization made the project of defining the "spirit of the age" increasingly urgent, the changing sense of futurity rendered the historical dimensions of the present deeply elusive. While historicist critics often are interested in what Romantic writers and their readers would have known, Rohrbach draws attention to moments when these writers felt they could not know the historical dimensions of their own age. Illuminating the poetic strategies Keats, Austen, Byron, and Hazlitt used to convey that sense of mystery, Rohrbach describes a poetic grammar of future anteriority—of uncertainty concerning what will have been. Romantic writers, she shows, do not simply reflect the history of their time; their works make imaginable a new way of thinking the historical present when faced with the temporalities of modernity

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources. Pour les minimalistes, tout commence seulement à l'époque achéménide, vers 400 avant notre ère, voire même encore plus tard à l'époque hellénistique. Ils font valoir que la Bible est une pure construction idéologique et que les premiers manuscrits datent précisément de cette époque. Mais le matériel et les traditions qui sont à l'origine de la Bible hébraïque sont antérieurs à l'époque perse. Developments in literary methodologies and archaeology have led scholars to question the traditional conception of biblical chronology and historiography. The starting point for Maximalist studies is the idea that the biblical story should simply be taken as true. However this position is indefensible from a scientific standpoint. Minimalists consider that everything began either during the Achaemenid period, around 400 years before our own era, or even later during the Hellenistic period. They claim that the Bible is a purely ideological construct and that the first known manuscripts date precisely from this era. However the material cultures and traditions underpinning the Hebrew Bible are often older than the Persian era.

    This article explores the relationships between memory, history and fiction in the Fourth Gospel. The first section is dedicated to the Johannine conception of the memory, taking into consideration recent research in the theory of social memory. The epilogue of the Gospel (John 21) considered as a paratext and the function attributed to the beloved disciple make it possible to specify the characteristics of this memory. The second section deals with the problem of the relationship between history and fiction in the context of ancient historiography. This includes observing how Johannine historiography follows the rules of ancient historiography, how it goes beyond them in its conception of space, time and characters, and how it offers a complete recomposition of the life of Jesus., French abstract: Cet article explore les relations entre mémoire, histoire et fiction dans le quatrième évangile. La première partie est consacrée à la conception johannique de la mémoire en tenant compte de la recherche récente sur la théorie sociale de la mémoire (« theory of social memory »). L'épilogue de l'évangile (chap. 21), considéré comme paratexte, et la fonction dévolue au disciple bien-aimé permettent de préciser les traits caractéristiques de cette mémoire. La deuxième partie aborde le problème de la relation entre histoire et fiction dans le contexte de l'historiographie antique. Il convient notamment de déterminer comment l'historiographie telle qu'elle est pratiquée par Jean, se plie aux conventions de ce genre et en quoi elle les dépasse. A cet égard, l'examen de la représentation de l'espace, du temps et des personnages, mais aussi la recomposition complète de la vie de Jésus, est riche de sens.

    This article explores the type and function of historiography in the pesharim, a group of biblical commentaries in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Although the unabashedly subjective viewpoint of history in the pesharim strongly contrasts modern notions of historiography, they nevertheless present a kind of history writing. In particular, historiography in the pesharim is analogous to traditional history, a type of history writing found in oral epics from around the world. Like traditional history, the pesharim owe their primary allegiance to a special register of language that is both traditional and adaptable. Rather than a factual record, the pesharim are formative cultural texts that use history to create and transmit cultural memory. More specifically, traditional history in the pesharim constructs a common descent of membership and "instrumentalizes" the past for identity formation in the present.

    Konstruieren Klänge Geschichte?     Am Beispiel der spätmittelalterlichen schottischen Historiografie entwickelt Davina Hachgenei einen neuen methodischen Zugriff für die Geschichtswissenschaften: Sie wendet eine narratologische Methode auf historische Quellen - The Bruce und Scotichronicon - an und ergänzt damit die klassische Hermeneutik um einen analytischen Zugang. Gleichzeitig kontextualisiert sie die theoretischen Grundlagen und trägt damit zur Neuausrichtung der narratologischen Theorie in der Kulturwissenschaft bei: eine Statusklärung der Narratologie als Theorie und Methode für die Geschichtswissenschaft.
