    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    The presence of the Tiǧāniyya in Ethiopia is well attested since the mission of Enrico Cerulli in early twentieth century.Since then the studies about the presence and diffusion of this order in Ethiopia have been based mainly on oral sources and fieldwork. The aim of this study is to present a very first overview of Tiǧānī literature in Ethiopia as found in the recent missions of the Islam in the Horn of Africa Project.Local literary production shows that Ethiopian masters and authors aimed to show to their disciples and readers a broader picture of the ṭarīqa, counterbalancing the local dimension of devotional piety.

    Advocating a revised history of the eighteenth-century novel, Novel Cleopatras showcases the novel’s origins in ancient mythology, its relation to epic narrative, and its connection to neoclassical print culture. Novel Cleopatras also rewrites the essential role of women writers in history who were typically underestimated as active participants of neoclassical culture, often excluded from the same schools that taught their brothers Greek and Latin. However, as author Nicole Horejsi reveals, a number of exceptional middle-class women were actually serious students of the classics. In order to dismiss the idea that women were completely marginalized as neoclassical writers, Horejsi takes up the character of Dido from ancient Greek mythology and her real-life counterpart Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. Together, the legendary Dido and historical Cleopatra serve as figures for the conflation of myth and history. Horejsi contends that turning to the doomed queens who haunted the Roman imagination enabled eighteenth-century novelists to seize the productive overlap among the categories of history, romance, the novel, and even the epic

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources. The study examines the specific literary patterns and textual strategies found in his texts, and employs discourse analysis to ask how Meyer positioned himself in the context of late medieval monastic reform, the theology of piety, and the reception of mysticism, and to assess his contribution to 15th-century German literature

    Modernity’s Mist explores an understudied aspect of Romanticism: its future-oriented poetics. Whereas Romanticism is well known for its relation to the past, Emily Rohrbach situates Romantic epistemological uncertainties in relation to historiographical debates that opened up a radically unpredictable and fast- approaching future. As the rise of periodization made the project of defining the "spirit of the age" increasingly urgent, the changing sense of futurity rendered the historical dimensions of the present deeply elusive. While historicist critics often are interested in what Romantic writers and their readers would have known, Rohrbach draws attention to moments when these writers felt they could not know the historical dimensions of their own age. Illuminating the poetic strategies Keats, Austen, Byron, and Hazlitt used to convey that sense of mystery, Rohrbach describes a poetic grammar of future anteriority—of uncertainty concerning what will have been. Romantic writers, she shows, do not simply reflect the history of their time; their works make imaginable a new way of thinking the historical present when faced with the temporalities of modernity

    Gianluca Delfino’s study is based on the assumption that Wilson Harris’s works as a whole show a remarkable unity of thought rooted in their author’s complex imagination. As a valuable contribution to Caribbean Literature and Philosophy, Harris’s imaginative approach to reality is discussed in relation to the categories of history and time with reference to several novels, from Palace of The Peacock to The Mask of the Beggar, with a special focus on The Infinite Rehearsal, Jonestown and The Dark Jester, spanning more than forty years of his vast literary production, encompassing critical perspectives ranging from African philosophy to Jungian readings through historiography and anthropology. As a result, the cross-cultural quality of Harris’s thought emerges as a healing outcome of the traumatic colonial encounter, bringing together elements of Amerindian, African and European origin in an ongoing dialogue with time, nature, and the psyche. The outcome of an extensive research into Harris’s world, Delfino’s study comes as a contribution to late Hena Maes-Jelinek’s critical enterprise by expanding philosophical and psychological readings, with the addition of anthropological perspectives that appeal to those who were captured by Harris’s intricacy and rescued by Maes-Jelinek’s illuminating interpretations. The attempt at the reconstruction of a unifying frame around Harris’s body of work suggests a new way of looking at one of the Caribbean’s most controversial authors.

    Advocating a revised history of the eighteenth-century novel, Novel Cleopatras showcases the novel’s origins in ancient mythology, its relation to epic narrative, and its connection to neoclassical print culture. Novel Cleopatras also rewrites the essential role of women writers in history who were typically underestimated as active participants of neoclassical culture, often excluded from the same schools that taught their brothers Greek and Latin. However, as author Nicole Horejsi reveals, a number of exceptional middle-class women were actually serious students of the classics. In order to dismiss the idea that women were completely marginalized as neoclassical writers, Horejsi takes up the character of Dido from ancient Greek mythology and her real-life counterpart Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. Together, the legendary Dido and historical Cleopatra serve as figures for the conflation of myth and history. Horejsi contends that turning to the doomed queens who haunted the Roman imagination enabled eighteenth-century novelists to seize the productive overlap among the categories of history, romance, the novel, and even the epic

Die Beiträger*innen liefern interdisziplinäre Positionen zu methodischen Fragen und Verfahren aktueller theaterwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Schwerpunkte liegen dabei auf Erweiterungen der Aufführungsanalyse, neuen Theaterhistoriografien sowie der Institutionenforschung.     Modernity’s Mist explores an understudied aspect of Romanticism: its future-oriented poetics. Whereas Romanticism is well known for its relation to the past, Emily Rohrbach situates Romantic epistemological uncertainties in relation to historiographical debates that opened up a radically unpredictable and fast- approaching future. As the rise of periodization made the project of defining the "spirit of the age" increasingly urgent, the changing sense of futurity rendered the historical dimensions of the present deeply elusive. While historicist critics often are interested in what Romantic writers and their readers would have known, Rohrbach draws attention to moments when these writers felt they could not know the historical dimensions of their own age. Illuminating the poetic strategies Keats, Austen, Byron, and Hazlitt used to convey that sense of mystery, Rohrbach describes a poetic grammar of future anteriority—of uncertainty concerning what will have been. Romantic writers, she shows, do not simply reflect the history of their time; their works make imaginable a new way of thinking the historical present when faced with the temporalities of modernity

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources. Les maximalistes partent de l'idée qu'il faut simplement faire confiance au récit biblique. Scientifiquement, cette position n'est pas tenable. Pour les minimalistes, tout commence seulement à l'époque achéménide, vers 400 avant notre ère, voire même encore plus tard à l'époque hellénistique. Ils font valoir que la Bible est une pure construction idéologique et que les premiers manuscrits datent précisément de cette époque. Mais le matériel et les traditions qui sont à l'origine de la Bible hébraïque sont antérieurs à l'époque perse. Developments in literary methodologies and archaeology have led scholars to question the traditional conception of biblical chronology and historiography. The starting point for Maximalist studies is the idea that the biblical story should simply be taken as true. However this position is indefensible from a scientific standpoint. Minimalists consider that everything began either during the Achaemenid period, around 400 years before our own era, or even later during the Hellenistic period. They claim that the Bible is a purely ideological construct and that the first known manuscripts date precisely from this era. However the material cultures and traditions underpinning the Hebrew Bible are often older than the Persian era.
