Abstract ; This article employs Igor Primoratz’s ethics of sexuality to analyze the incestuous relationship between a thirteen year old girl and her uncle in the novel El lenguaje the las orquídeas (2007), by Adriana González Mateos. My critical inquiry starts with a basic question: What hides behind the multiple ways in which incest is represented here? The obvious answer would be: the disintegration of the family. By analogy, if the family falls apart, so does the whole country. The Mexican nation here, as Doris Summers would say, no longer needs incest to consolidate itself, perhaps because this concept is undergoing profound transformations. Due to continuous social and cultural shifts, as well as the profound mark feminist and gay liberation movements have left on the Mexican society, the novel discussed here posits a new vision of incest. One that leaves behind the pater familias in order to reveal the growing importance of women in society and their role in the formation (or disintegration for that matter) of the family nucleus.

This article opens a window on the world of chaplains supporting seafarers, which has largely been neglected by the literature. Shipping happens in ports, which are often far away from urban centres. It is thus removed from everyday experience making seafarers an invisible population and, with them, the chaplains who assist them. The article proposes to view chaplains' service to seafarers as a form of 'embodied' hospitality. It is an offer of a relationship as well as of assistance. The angle of hospitality sheds light on the dynamics of the relationships between seafarers and chaplains, the tensions and opportunities for exchange. The ethic of chaplains' hospitality that emerges from the observation and interviews is one of 'compassion' requiring openness to and acceptance of the other. Compassion, here, is the recognition of the dignity of the other based on a shared humanity.

This article studies the complexity of understandings of forgiveness among a sample of Black and White South Africans within the context of an empirical intercultural Bible reading process. We will first focus on the foundation upon which the study is predicated—namely that the social imagination of forgiveness is deeply contested among South Africans. Next, we will discuss the approach that the study took to gather the necessary data, and analyse the theological views of forgiveness among the participants in the study. Finally, we shall discuss some of the primary findings of the study. These show that social identity plays a significant role in shaping theological hermeneutics. Black and White participants hold diverse, and even conflicting, expressions and expectations for forgiveness. These are characterised as predominantly social and political for the Black participants, and predominantly individual and spiritual for the White participants.

Literature can offer a space and hope for a possible creative theology, and this is true also of the contemporary literature of China. In 1923 Lu Xun expressed his hope that literature was capable of transforming the spirit of the Chinese people, Chinese fiction has drawn upon the ancient wisdom of China to explore possibilities after the Cultural Revolution in works that are sometimes banned in the Peoples Republic of China but increasingly have a world readership in English translations. They may be compared with some of the ideas of liberation theology in the western tradition.

The relationship between 1 Corinthians 1-4 and the pursuant chapters has been a perennial issue for scholars of 1 Corinthians. Recent scholarship stressing the rhetorical unity of 1 Corinthians has demonstrated that the entire letter may well be read as an homonoia speech. Precisely how so in 1 Corinthians 5 remains a matter of some confusion. This is no more clear than in scholarship focused on inner-biblical exegesis, which has strongly emphasized the role of Jewish Scripture in Paul’s ethical argumentation. These scholars tend to see an end to Paul’s rhetorical-philosophical argument and the beginning of Pauline sexual ethics grounded in Jewish Scripture. My aim is to demonstrate Paul’s thoroughgoing homonoia argument in 1 Corinthians 5. Assailing the Corinthian Strong with a barrage of rhetorical and philosophical arguments, Paul simultaneously exposes the false wisdom of the Strong and espouses his own social ethic for the protection and preservation of the Corinthians’ social body.

Morality begins where good and bad or good and evil are distinguished. This distinction is applied to God and to the world at large but rarely to itself. The moral qualification of the foundational principals of morality is rather the exception. It is not suggested that morality has negative consequences or evil motives. A short and in no means complete look into the history of the development of morality shows hidden trends in moral tectonics.
