Over the course of the long eighteenth century, a network of some fifty women writers, working in French, English, Dutch, and German, staked out a lasting position in the European literary field. These writers were multilingual and lived for many years outside of their countries of origin, translated and borrowed from each others' works, attended literary circles and salons, and fashioned a transnational women's literature characterized by highly recognizable codes. Drawing on a literary geography of national types, women writers across Western Europe read, translated, wrote, and rewrote stories about exceptional young women, literary heroines who transcend the gendered destiny of their distinctive cultural and national contexts. These transcultural heroines struggle against the cultural constraints determining the sexualized fates of local girls. In Heroines and Local Girls, Pamela L. Cheek explores the rise of women's writing as a distinct, transnational category in Britain and Europe between 1650 and 1810. Starting with an account of a remarkable tea party that brought together Frances Burney, Sophie von La Roche, and Marie Elisabeth de La Fite in conversation about Stéphanie de Genlis, she excavates a complex community of European and British women authors. In chapters that incorporate history, network theory, and feminist literary history, she examines the century-and-a-half literary lineage connecting Madame de Maintenon to Mary Wollstonecraft, including Charlotte Lennox and Françoise de Graffigny and their radical responses to sexual violence. Neither simply a reaction to, nor collusion with, patriarchal and national literary forms but, rather, both, women's writing offered an invitation to group membership through a literary project of self-transformation. In so doing, argues Cheek, women's writing was the first modern literary category to capitalize transnationally on the virtue of identity, anticipating the global literary marketplace's segmentation of affinity-based reading publics, and continuing to define women's writing to this day

This dissertation arises from a simple question: what value did Darwinism hold for late nineteenth century feminists? The answer, I demonstrate, rests in a "Darwinian feminism" that takes advantage of Darwin's destabilization, particularly in The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man, of the boundaries between individual and species. For late nineteenth-century women, who were often exhorted to subsume their selves for the sake of the species, Darwin's language could justify what I term "communities of dissent." These communities depended upon female variation so that the group functioned through its differences rather than by establishing utopian coherence. Examining a transnational group of late nineteenth century texts---Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland, Mona Caird's The Daughters of Danaus and George Eliot's Middlemarch---I contend that these fictions regularly turn to Darwinian feminist ideas to rethink individual and group identity. Maternity and sorority, two prevalent modes of portraying female communities in public and novelistic discourse, take center stage in each novel and, I suggest, should be understood as models of communities of dissent. Insisting upon the flexibility of group identity allowed these writers a fresh way to approach maternal inheritance and the "sisterhood" of female coalition, in which variation signals success rather than dissolution. With the help of Darwin, I reread the accomplishments of the various female lives depicted in the fiction I study. While individual characters often do not flourish, they create communities of dissent that support variation and offer hope for long term change. Despite some of the conservative uses to which Darwin was put at the turn-of-the-century, the writers in my study actively engaged with his ideas in order to envision what an effective coalition of varying women might look like

‘This is an impressive study, homing in on a notable gap in writing within the apocalyptic tradition. It is engagingly written, extensive in its choice of texts and, throughout, the textual analysis is in productive dialogue with critical theory. Repeatedly, we learn how the fiction of elsewhere and the fiction of the future urgently speak to our here and now.’ — Mary Eagleton, author of Clever Girls and the Literature of Women’s Upward Mobility (2018) This book examines how contemporary women novelists have successfully transformed and rewritten the conventions of post-apocalyptic fiction. Since the dawn of the new millennium, there has been an outpouring of writing that depicts the end of the world as we know it, and women writers are no exception to this trend. However, the book argues that their fiction is distinctive. Contemporary women’s work in this genre avoids conservatism, a nostalgic mourning for the past, and the focus on restoring what has been lost, aspects key to much maleauthored apocalyptic fiction. Instead, contemporary women writers show readers the ways in which patriarchy and neo-colonialism are intrinsically implicated in the disasters they envision, and offer qualified hope for a new beginning for society, culture and literature after an imagined apocalyptic event. Exploring science, nature and matter, the posthuman body, the maternal imaginary, time, narrative and history, literature and the word, and the post-secular, the book covers a wide variety of writers and addresses issues of nationality, race and ethnicity, as well as gender and sexuality. Susan Watkins is a Professor of Women’s Writing at Leeds Beckett University. Her key publications include Twentieth-Century Women Novelists: Feminist Theory into Practice (2001), Doris Lessing (2010) and (as co-editor) Scandalous Fictions: The Twentieth-Century Novel in the Public Sphere (2006), Doris Lessing: Border Crossings (2009) and The History of British Women’s Writing Vol 9: 1945–1975 (2017)
