    Critical editions of most classical authors are based on readings transmitted by medieval scholars that can be examined and collated. Modern editions of Petronius, on the other hand, are principally based on printed editions, most of them published in France during the sixteenth century. In this volume T. Wade Richardson considers the use made of the Petronius manuscripts then extant by seven French humanist editors for their various editions, commentaries, and notes.Some of the manuscripts they used may be equated with extant exemplars, which therefore serve as a good check on the quality of their readings. But as much as half of the text rests on the sixteenth-century witness alone. Through a broad and integrated study of the problems of the Petronius text the author attempts to unravel the tangled skein of humanist work on Petronius, to settle some of the old textual puzzles, and to solidify the text and recast the apparatus.Richardson also provides information on the codicology and palaeography of the texts and on the talents and habits of the scholars who created them.

    The elegist Sextus Propertius (ca 50–ca 16 BC) is generally reckoned among the most difficult of Latin authors. At the root of this difficulty lies a deeply corrupt text and uncertainty over the manuscript transmission; moreover, the manuscripts used in the standard editions of today have been selected without a comprehensive examination of the surviving copies. This study, the fullest survey of the manuscripts so far, considers the affiliation of more than 140 complete or partial witnesses and offers a thorough reassessment of the tradition. The principal novelty is the argument that six Renaissance copies represent an independent third witness to the archetype, revealing passages where corruptions, glosses, or medieval corrections are now accepted as the words of Propertius and suggesting that the archetype was far more corrupt than now commonly supposed. The study is in two parts. In Part One, after a survey of Propertius’ fortuna in the Middle Ages, the author considers the affiliation and history of the known manuscripts and editions to 1502, then offers a text and revised apparatus of four elegies; in Part Two he presents detailed descriptions of 143 manuscripts, most of them from personal inspection.

    Beowulf, like The Iliad and The Odyssey, is a foundational work of Western literature that originated in mysterious circumstances. In The Transmission of "Beowulf," Leonard Neidorf addresses philological questions that are fundamental to the study of the poem. Is Beowulf the product of unitary or composite authorship? How substantially did scribes alter the text during its transmission, and how much time elapsed between composition and preservation?Neidorf answers these questions by distinguishing linguistic and metrical regularities, which originate with the Beowulf poet, from patterns of textual corruption, which descend from copyists involved in the poem's transmission. He argues, on the basis of archaic features that pervade Beowulf and set it apart from other Old English poems, that the text preserved in the sole extant manuscript (ca. 1000) is essentially the work of one poet who composed it circa 700. Of course, during the poem’s written transmission, several hundred scribal errors crept into its text. These errors are interpreted in the central chapters of the book as valuable evidence for language history, cultural change, and scribal practice. Neidorf’s analysis reveals that the scribes earnestly attempted to standardize and modernize the text’s orthography, but their unfamiliarity with obsolete words and ancient heroes resulted in frequent errors. The Beowulf manuscript thus emerges from his study as an indispensible witness to processes of linguistic and cultural change that took place in England between the eighth and eleventh centuries. An appendix addresses J. R. R. Tolkien’s Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary, which was published in 2014. Neidorf assesses Tolkien’s general views on the transmission of Beowulf and evaluates his position on various textual issues.

    The study looks at eight cases of dissemination of encyclopedic knowledge in the European Middle Ages. As a major source of insight, the author draws on the prologues of the selected Latin (e.g. "Elucidarum", "Hortus delicarium"), German (Lucidarius, Hiltgart von Hürnheim's "Encyclopedia"), French ("Livre de Sidrac", Brunetto Latini, Christine de Pizan), and Spanish works, examining them from the perspective of communication science. The results point up not only a number of constants but also some surprises in connection with the vehicles, forms, and audiences of encyclopedic knowledge dissemination. Untersucht werden acht Fälle der Weitergabe enzyklopädischen Wissens im europäischen Mittelalter. Als "Steinbrüche" der Erkenntnis dienen dabei die Prologe der ausgewählten lateinischen (z.B. »Elucidarium«, »Hortus delicarium«), deutschen (»Lucidarius«, Hiltgarts von Hürnheim »Enzyklopädie«), französischen (»Livre de Sidrac«, Brunetto Latini, Christine de Pizan) und spanischen Werke, die aus kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Perspektive analysiert werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen einige Konstanten, aber auch Überraschungen, was Träger, Formen und Publikum der enzyklopädischen Wissensvermittlung betrifft.

    Die herausragende literarische Bedeutung des Parzival von Wolfram von Eschenbach zeigt sich nicht zuletzt darin, dass der Roman aus der höfischen Blütezeit noch am Ende des Mittelalters immer wieder neu abgeschrieben und sogar gedruckt wurde. Die Monographie untersucht vier Handschriften und Frühdrucke aus dieser medialen Umbruchszeit des 15. Jahrhunderts, die sich einerseits durch ihre Abhängigkeit von der frühen, noch kaum beachteten Fassung *m als bedeutsam für die Textgeschichte, andererseits durch ihre neuartigen Layoutverfahren als aussagekräftig für ihre Epoche erweisen. The outstanding literary significance of Wolfram von Eschenbach`s Parzival is due in no small part to the fact that this romance from the courtly golden age was still being repeatedly copied at the close of the Middle Ages and was even printed. The monograph examines four manuscripts and early prints from this time of transition in written media in the 15th century, on the one hand, the texts prove significant for textual history through their dependence on the early version *m, largely neglected now, and on the other, the novel layouts used are expressive of their epoch.

    Das Münchner Graduiertenkolleg »Textkritik als Grundlage und Methode historischer Wissenschaften« hat Editoren und Texttheoretiker aus den 'klassischen' philologischen Fächern, aus der Geschichts-, Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft sowie der Philosophie zusammengeführt. Die interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung des Kollegs spiegelt sich in den Beiträgen zu diesem Sammelband, der neben texttheoretischen und editionsgeschichtlichen Arbeiten auch kleinere Editionen und Handschriftenstudien enthält. Der Band erscheint aus Anlaß des 65. Geburtstags von Hans Walter Gabler, der von 1996 bis zum Abschluß des Kollegs im Jahre 2002 dessen Sprecher gewesen ist. The Munich-based German Research Council-funded post-graduate research group 'Textual Criticism as a Basis and Method in Historical Studies' brought together editor and text theoreticians from the Classics, art history, musicology and philosophy. The interdisciplinary nature of the research group is reflected in the contributions to this collection, which contains smaller-scale editions and manuscript studies alongside studies on text theory and editing history. The volume marks the 65th birthday of Hans Walter Gabler, who was spokesman of the research group from 1996 to its conclusion in 2002.

    Biographical note: Marcus Deufert is Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Classical Studies at the Georg-August University of Göttingen. Biographical note: Marcus Deufert ist Oberassistent am Seminar für Klassische Philologie an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. After his death, the comedies of the Roman dramatist Plautus continued to be staged, and were interpreted by scholars and read by enthusiasts and students. The present study deals with the textual history and reception of these comedies from their first performances (approx. 220 - 185 BC) until the start of their direct transmission (approx. 400 AD). The author traces the changes that occurred in the course of the comedies' performance, commentary and exploitation by scholars and teachers. In the process, he not only draws a fascinating and comprehensive picture of the history of Plautus reception and scholarship in classical times, but also provides important insights into the history of literary and linguistic studies in Rome. Die Komödien des römischen Dichters Plautus wurden nach dessen Tod erneut auf die Bühne gebracht, von Philologen erklärt und von Liebhabern und Schülern gelesen. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich der Textgeschichte und Rezeption dieser Komödien von den Uraufführungen (ca. 220 - 185 v. Chr.) bis zum Einsetzen der direkten Überlieferung (ca. 400 n. Chr.). Der Autor geht den Veränderungen der Komödientexte im Zuge ihrer Aufführung, Kommentierung und Verwertung durch Philologen und Lehrer nach. Er entwirft damit nicht nur ein faszinierendes Gesamtbild der Geschichte der Plautusphilologie und -rezeption im Altertum, sondern gibt auch wichtige Einblicke in die Geschichte der Philologie in Rom.

    In 1823, Sir Henry Bunbury discovered a badly bound volume of twelve Shakespeare plays in a closet of his manor house. Nearly all of the plays were first editions, but one stood out as extraordinary: a previously unknown text of Hamlet that predated all other versions. Suddenly, the world had to grapple with a radically new—or rather, old—Hamlet in which the characters, plot, and poetry of Shakespeare's most famous play were profoundly and strangely transformed. Q1, as the text is known, has been declared a rough draft, a shorthand piracy, a memorial reconstruction, and a pre-Shakespearean "ur-Hamlet," among other things. Flickering between two historical moments—its publication in Shakespeare's early seventeenth century and its rediscovery in Bunbury's early nineteenth—Q1 is both the first and last Hamlet. Because this text became widely known only after the familiar version of the play had reached the pinnacle of English literature, its reception has entirely depended on this uncanny temporal oscillation; so too has its ongoing influence on twentieth- and twenty-first-century ideas of the play. Zachary Lesser examines how the improbable discovery of Q1 has forced readers to reconsider accepted truths about Shakespeare as an author and about the nature of Shakespeare's texts. In telling the story of this mysterious quarto and tracing the debates in newspapers, London theaters, and scholarly journals that followed its discovery, Lesser offers brilliant new insights on what we think we mean by Hamlet.

    The authority of canonical texts, especially of the Bible, is often described in static definitions. However, the authority of these texts was acquired as well as exercised in a dynamic process of transmission and reception. This book analyzes selected aspects of this historical process. Attention is paid to biblical master-texts and to other texts related to the “biblical worlds” in various historical periods and contexts. The studies examine particular texts, textual variants, translations, paraphrases and other elements in the process of textual transmission. The range covered spans from the Iron Age, through the Old Testament texts, their manuscripts and other texts from Qumran, the Septuagint, down to the New Testament, Apocrypha, Coptic texts, Patristics, and even modern translations of the Bible. Der Band erscheint aus Anlaß des 65. Geburtstags von Hans Walter Gabler, der von 1996 bis zum Abschluß des Kollegs im Jahre 2002 dessen Sprecher gewesen ist. The Munich-based German Research Council-funded post-graduate research group 'Textual Criticism as a Basis and Method in Historical Studies' brought together editor and text theoreticians from the Classics, art history, musicology and philosophy. The interdisciplinary nature of the research group is reflected in the contributions to this collection, which contains smaller-scale editions and manuscript studies alongside studies on text theory and editing history. The volume marks the 65th birthday of Hans Walter Gabler, who was spokesman of the research group from 1996 to its conclusion in 2002.

Die Monographie untersucht vier Handschriften und Frühdrucke aus dieser medialen Umbruchszeit des 15. Jahrhunderts, die sich einerseits durch ihre Abhängigkeit von der frühen, noch kaum beachteten Fassung *m als bedeutsam für die Textgeschichte, andererseits durch ihre neuartigen Layoutverfahren als aussagekräftig für ihre Epoche erweisen. The outstanding literary significance of Wolfram von Eschenbach`s Parzival is due in no small part to the fact that this romance from the courtly golden age was still being repeatedly copied at the close of the Middle Ages and was even printed. The monograph examines four manuscripts and early prints from this time of transition in written media in the 15th century, on the one hand, the texts prove significant for textual history through their dependence on the early version *m, largely neglected now, and on the other, the novel layouts used are expressive of their epoch.

    The authority of canonical texts, especially of the Bible, is often described in static definitions. However, the authority of these texts was acquired as well as exercised in a dynamic process of transmission and reception. This book analyzes selected aspects of this historical process. Attention is paid to biblical master-texts and to other texts related to the “biblical worlds” in various historical periods and contexts. The studies examine particular texts, textual variants, translations, paraphrases and other elements in the process of textual transmission. The range covered spans from the Iron Age, through the Old Testament texts, their manuscripts and other texts from Qumran, the Septuagint, down to the New Testament, Apocrypha, Coptic texts, Patristics, and even modern translations of the Bible. The book is particularly intended for those interested in the history of reception and transmission of biblical texts and in the textual criticism.
