    Der ägyptische Gelehrte, Übersetzer und Autor Rifā‘a Rāfi‘ aṭ -Ṭ ahṭ āwī (1801–1873) ist eine Schlüsselfigur des Übersetzungsprojektes, das Muhammad Ali in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts in Ägypten initiierte. Das Ziel aller Reformen Muhammad Alis war die Modernisierung des Landes. Hildegard Maria Mader sieht im Übersetzen einen strategischen Pfeiler dieses Reformprozesses. In der Folge stand die Herausbildung einer eigenen Translationskultur. Diese fand nach einer vorbereitenden Studienmission nach Paris in der Eröffnung der Sprachenschule in Kairo 1837 ihren Höhepunkt. Auf der Basis von Erich Prunčs Theorien zur Translationskultur und Translationsgeschichte sowie von Pierre Bourdieus Theorien zum Habitus analysiert Mader anhand des Paris-Berichts aṭ-Ṭ ahṭ āwīs die Translationsprozesse. Sie nimmt die Rolle aṭ -Ṭ ahṭ āwīs und anderer Akteure in den Blick und beleuchtet die Verflechtungen und Machtkonstellationen der Beteiligten.

Sowohl Translationswissenschaft als auch professionelle Translatorinnen und Translatoren wollen den Begriff eng fassen. Sie wenden ihn allein auf den translatorischen Akt und die damit betrauten Akteure an. Die Realität ist jedoch komplexer: Übersetzen und Dolmetschen sind oft Teamarbeit. Mit zunehmender Digitalisierung ist ein Translat immer häufiger das Ergebnis maschineller Translation. Genutzt und gedeutet wird ein so entstandener Text vom Publikum. Ruth Katharina Kopp lenkt den Blick auf den phänomenalen Stand einer auf Translation bezogenen Verantwortung. Sie löst diese von den Begriffen Handlung und Intention sowie vom personalen Subjekt. Mit Rekurs auf Emmanuel Levinas’ Verantwortungsphilosophie und Teile der responsiven Ethik nach Bernhard Waldenfels gelingt es ihr, den Begriff der Verantwortung auch für den Bereich der maschinellen Translation fruchtbar zu machen.

In fünfzehn Einzelstudien werden gesellschaftliche Leitvorstellungen, Wahrnehmungsmuster und Kommunikationsformen erforscht, die seit dem 15. Jahrhundert durch Praktiken des Übersetzens etabliert werden und bis in die Gegenwart von prägender Bedeutung sind. Behandelt werden etwa jiddische und kymrische Bibelüber­setzungen, tamilische und zapotekische Missionstexte sowie französische und arabische Kartenmaterialien. This interdisciplinary open-access collection addresses the multifarious concepts and methods of translation as a central and ubiquitous cultural technique of the Early Modern period (1450–1800). It features fifteen studies on the guiding principles, perception patterns, and communication forms that have taken root in society since the fifteenth century through the practices of translation and are still of defining importance today. The research spectrum encompasses such diverse topics as Yiddish and Welsh translations of the Bible, Tamil and Zapotec mission texts, and French and Arabic cartographic material.

    The Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio has had a long and colourful history in English translation. This new interdisciplinary study presents the first exploration of the reception of Boccaccio’s writings in English literary culture, tracing his presence from the early fifteenth century to the 1930s. Guyda Armstrong tells this story through a wide-ranging journey through time and space – from the medieval reading communities of Naples and Avignon to the English court of Henry VIII, from the censorship of the Decameron to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, from the world of fine-press printing to the clandestine pornographers of 1920s New York, and much more.Drawing on the disciplines of book history, translation studies, comparative literature, and visual studies, the author focuses on the book as an object, examining how specific copies of manuscripts and printed books were presented to an English readership by a variety of translators. Armstrong is thereby able to reveal how the medieval text in translation is remade and re-authorized for every new generation of readers.

Der Fachbereich Translations-, Sprach- und Kulturwissenschaft (FTSK) Germersheim der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz feierte im Jahr 2022 sein 75-jähriges Bestehen. Dieses Jubiläum nahm der Germersheimer Arbeitsbereich Allgemeine und Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft sowie Translationstechnologie (ASTT) zum Anlass, im Rahmen einer Tagung 2022 einen Blick nicht auf die Vergangenheit, sondern die Zukunft des Übersetzerberufs zu werfen. Im Zentrum des Interesses standen dabei die Auswirkungen, die der Übersetzerberuf und die Übersetzerausbildung im Zuge des digitalen Wandels erfahren, der insbesondere in Gestalt der Maschinellen Übersetzung und der fortschreitenden Automatisierung von Übersetzungsprozessen die Branche zunehmend prägt. Welche Kompetenzen müssen Studierenden heute vermittelt werden, damit sie in der Berufswelt von morgen ihren Platz finden? Wie kann man sie mit einer positiven Haltung dem digitalen Wandel gegenüber ausstatten und ihnen somit eine aktive Rolle in diesem System ermöglichen?
