    Die Legende von der Versuchung des heiligen Antonius, interpretiert von Künstlern des 14. bis 20. Jahrhunderts (LK/HL: Ittekkot) Die Legende von der Versuchung des asketischen Einsiedlers Antonius in der Wüste durch Frauen und Dämonen war immer ein dankbares Motiv der bildenden Kunst. Die Ausstellung im Hamburger Bucerius-Kunstforum versammelt 70 Exponate aus dem 14. bis 20. Jahrhundert, darunter Gemälde, Buchillustrationen, Grafiken und Plastiken, die von wechselnd bewundernder, faszinierter, doch auch von ironisch gebrochener künstlerischer Rezeption des Heiligen und seiner Standhaftigkeit zeugen. Der Ausstellungskatalog dokumentiert und erläutert die Exponate, geht aber darüber hinaus, indem er auch Werke wie den Isenheimer Altar, der Colmar natürlich nicht verlassen durfte, und andere bekannte Meisterwerke zum Thema in die Darstellung einschließt und so ein umfassenderes Bild der Wirkungsgeschichte des Motivs präsentiert. Im Anhang findet man nicht nur die übliche Auswahlbibliografie, sondern auch ein alphabetisches "Inventar der Versuchungen", mit allem, was den Heiligen bedrängte. (3) (LK/HL: Ittekkot)

How did the apple, unmentioned by the Bible, become the dominant symbol of temptation, sin, and the Fall? Temptation Transformed pursues this mystery across art and religious history, uncovering where, when, and why the forbidden fruit became an apple Azzan Yadin-Israel reveals that Eden’s fruit, once thought to be a fig or a grape, first appears as an apple in twelfth-century French art. He then traces this image back to its source in medieval storytelling. Though scholars often blame theologians for the apple, accounts of the Fall written in commonly spoken languages—French, German, and English—influenced a broader audience than cloistered Latin commentators. Azzan Yadin-Israel shows that, over time, the words for “fruit” in these languages narrowed until an apple in the Garden became self-evident. It's no secret that the fruit in the Book of Genesis is never actually identified as an apple. So how did we get to this common association? The standard story, repeated since at least the seventeenth century, is that it is due to a Latin pun. But what if that story is wrong? In Temptation Transformed, scholar of religion Azzan Yadin-Israel offers a different story. He examines how the Fall of Man was represented in art form early Christianity through the Renaissance, revealing that the iconography of the apple emerged in twelfth-century France. From there it spread to England, Germany, and the Low Countries, while remaining only a marginal presence in Italy and Spain for centuries.
