    "James Joyce's near blindness, his peculiar gait, and his death from perforated ulcers are commonplace knowledge to most of his readers. But until now, most Joyce scholars have not recognized that these symptoms point to a diagnosis of syphilis." "In what is sure to be a controversial work, Kathleen Ferris traces Joyce's medical history as described in his correspondence, in the diaries of his brother Stanislaus, and in the memoirs of his acquaintances, to show that many of his symptoms match those of tabes dorsalis, a form of neurosyphilis which, untreated, eventually leads to paralysis." "Combining literary analysis and medical detection, Ferris builds a convincing case that this dread disease is the subject of much of Joyce's autobiographical writing. Many of his characters, most notably Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, exhibit the same symptoms as their creator: stiffness of gait, digestive problems, hallucinations, and impaired vision. Ferris also demonstrates that the themes of sin, guilt, and retribution so prevalent in Joyce's works are almost certainly a consequence of his having contracted venereal disease as a young man while frequenting the brothels of Dublin and Paris."     Dieses Buch bemüht sich um eine Gesamtdarstellung zur 1492 anhebenden und bis 1942 so gut wie unbehandelbaren „Lustseuche“ Syphilis anhand ausgewählter literarischer Texte, ausgehend von der Renaissance in der Lesart Honoré de Balzacs, dessen Werk – zusammen mit jenem Émile Zolas – als Teil einer Sozialpädagogik ‚avant la lettre‘ gelesen wird. Weitere Schwerpunkte setzen, gleichfalls als Nicht-Syphilitiker betrachtet, Interpretationen zu Alfred de Musset, Edmond de Goncourt sowie zu Arthur Schnitzler und zu Thomas Mann, aber auch zu Werken von Syphilitikern wie Gustave Flaubert, Alphonse Daudet und Guy de Maupassant, schließlich zu Friedrich Nietzsche und seiner durch seine Schwester – gegen seine Krankheit – forcierten Indienststellung als NS-Philosoph. Die These, auf die alles zuläuft: Hitler, der Sypholophobie ausgeliefert wie kaum ein Zweiter, hätte Nietzsche eigentlich, dessen Ungnade der späten Geburt vorausgesetzt, ebenso vergasen oder vergiften lassen müssen, wie er das nach 1939 mit allen Syphilitikern, von ihm gelesen als erbkranke Hinterlassenschaft jüdischer Dekadenz, tat.

Sjukdomen smittar genom sexuell överföring och kan leda till livslångt fysiskt och psykiskt lidande, men den är mer än bara en sjukdom: den har varit så belastad av skam, skuld, sensation och groteskeri att den varit svår att diskutera i neutrala termer. Historien har en klar början, med Columbus resor till Nya världen, och ett slut genom penicillinets genombrott. Men den är ingalunda utdöd, utan har levt upp igen i 2000-talets populärkultur. I Smittans rike tar Agneta Rahikainen avstamp i sin egen familjehistoria för att sedan dyka ned i kulturhistoriska, medicinska, etiska, könspolitiska och konstnärliga sätt att bearbeta sjukdomen, från 1500-talet ända fram till modern tid. Det leder henne in på frågor om samhällsmoral, rashygien, renlighet, sociala problem, prostitution och kvinnans roll som mor och hustru.     Der zwölfte Band des ‚Jahrbuchs Literatur und Medizin‘ beginnt mit Originalbeiträgen, in denen die literarisch gestaltete Wahrnehmung von Krankheit und Tod eine zentrale Rolle einnimmt. Einerseits wird auf Aspekte von Kindertotenliedern im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert und dann auf die Bedeutung der Syphilis bei Arthur Schnitzler, später auch noch auf Friedrich Nietzsches Syphilis eingegangen. Andererseits stehen zeitgenössische Werke im Fokus: Die therapeutische Funktion der Literatur auf gesellschaftlicher Ebene wird am Beispiel des japanischen Schriftstellers Atushi Nakajima (1909–1942) diskutiert; die narrative Verarbeitung der eigenen Krankheit wird anhand von Siri Hustvedts Buch ‚The Shaking Woman‘ (2010) analysiert. Die aktuelle Corona-Pandemie wird in den Essays aufgegriffen, wenn Darstellungen von Seuchen in der Geschichte in den Blick kommen. Darüber hinaus werden aber auch verschiedene Formen der Literarisierung des bevorstehenden Todes in zeitgenössischer Literatur vertieft und mit der Frage nach der Selbstbestimmung enggeführt.
