    This book offers a synchronic exegesis of Saul's night visit to the witch of En-dor (1 Samuel 28:3-25), focusing on the web of repetitions of visual elements, of symbols, of sounds, of entire scenes, and of keywords. Kent shows how an artistry of repetition and non-repetition helps to build characterization, plot, structure, as well as prophetic fulfillments, foreshadowing, and inter-textual warnings. He also argues that film theory applied to the analysis of story in the Hebrew Bible helps us attain much greater clarity in our appreciation of the functions of narrative repetition

    Welches Spiel spielt die Literatur? Und wie funktioniert dieses Spiel mit Worten? Germanisten aus ganz Europa und dem Mittelmeerraum sind diesen Fragen nachgegangen, um das komplexe Verhältnis von Literatur und Spiel neu zu ergründen. Ausgehend von anthropologischen Kategorien des Spiels, wie sie Johan Huizinga und Roger Caillois definiert haben, untersuchen sie literarische Texte vom Barock bis zur Gegenwart. Die dabei zutage tretenden Erkenntnisse beziehen sich maßgeblich auf das Spiel mit den Regeln, das Spiel mit dem Unsichtbaren, das Spiel mit ästhetischen und kulturellen Intertexten, das Spiel mit den Verhältnissen sowie auf die Ethik des Spiels und nicht zuletzt auf die Frage: Literatur – ein Spiel ohne Ende?

    Der Regisseur David Lynch ist berüchtigt für Filme, die schwer bis gar nicht verständlich sind und jedweder Logik fern, ja ,surreal' zu sein scheinen. Doch worin liegt diese Surrealität begründet? Im Anschluss an Ansätze der neueren Erzähltheorie spürt Monta Alaine dem Surrealen in Lynchs möglich-unmöglichen fillmischen Welten nach. Sie stellt Lynchs Filme Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive und Inland Empire in den Kontext einer Surrealismus-Forschung, die von einem surreal[istisch]en Stil . lmischen Erzählens ausgeht, der in Filmen wie Luis Buñuels und Salvador Dalís Un Chien Andalou seinen Ursprung fand, nicht aber in konsequenter Weiterführung des Surrealismus im Sinne einer ganzheitlichen revolutionären Bewegung steht. Untersucht werden besonders prägnante Stellen hinsichtlich surrealisierender ästhetischer Verfahren, ferner die Selbstreflexivität der Filme als surreales Stilmittel. Abschließend erfolgt eine Diskussion der wechselseitigen Beeinflussung von Lynchs Filmen und seinem sonstigen künstlerischen Schaffen
