    Künstlerbiographie und Werk stehen in einem Spannungsverhältnis - eine Problematik, der sich dieser Band anhand der Biographien bekannter Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts (u.a. Jean Cocteau, Marilyn Monroe, Thomas Bernhard und Václav Havel) nähert. Dabei wird nicht nur das öffentlich (und damit selbst zum Kunstwerk) gemachte Leben berücksichtigt, sondern auch die Rezeption in biographischen Texten, Filmen und anderen Medien. Die Zusammenschau aus den Bereichen der Literatur, der Musik und den bildenden sowie performativen Künsten, wie sie dieser Band zum ersten Mal bietet, ermöglicht eine Abstraktion von den jeweiligen Produktionsbedingungen und eröffnet den Blick auf übergreifende Künstlerkonzepte. Zudem legt sie die Bedeutung gender- und ethnizitätsrelevanter Faktoren für die Konstruktion von Künstlerleben frei Artists' biographies and their work are under a certain tension - an issue that this volume approaches via the biographies of well known 20th century artists (including Jean Cocteau, Marilyn Monroe, Thomas Bernhard and Václav Havel). Here, not only the public life (a work of art itself by virtue of its publicity) is taken into account, but also the reception in biographic texts, movies, and other media.     As much as the powerful appearance of film-maker Alfred Hitchcock still fascinates today, artists Gilbert & George have created a unique brand identity over several decades. Assuming that star personas are constituted by performative acts and rely on mechanisms of repetition, the focus lies on exploring these complex star phenomena through their individual performances and appearances, as they generate a coherent image across various media. Great attention is also attached to paratexts, such as trailers, print advertising, and photographs. Ebenso wie die mächtige Erscheinung des Filmemachers Alfred Hitchcock noch heute fasziniert, haben die Künstler Gilbert & George über mehrere Jahrzehnte eine unverwechselbare Markenidentität kreiert. Anhand dieser prominenten Positionen analysiert Nadine Seligmann unter Berücksichtigung paratextueller Elemente, darunter Trailer, Printwerbung und Fotografien, Mechanismen der Starproduktion. Harrison to assess the ancient preoccupation with fame, hierarchy, and status. He shows how Paul's gospel of the crucified Christ stood out in a culture obsessed with mutual comparison, boasting, and self-sufficiency. It departed from the self-exalting mores of classical culture and enshrined humility and other-centeredness in the western intellectual tradition. As such, the soteriological power of the cross became an impetus not only for individual moral transformation but also for social change.
