Table of contents; chapter one -- introduction; chapter two -- the book review as a special form of communication; chapter three -- communication; chapter four -- the review as a work of art; chapter five -- the reviews (and review essays); chapter six -- conclusion. The Review as Art and Communication not only presents the idea that book reviews, record reviews, theatrical reviews and reviews of any genre can be substantive essays on their own - expounding and elaborating on the concepts and ideas of the original material critiqued - but it also explores the ""shelf-life"" of the review: the odd phenomenon that just like other forms of art, some stand the test-of-time, and some do not. This book also collects the book reviews of one scholar: Max J. Skidmo

"THE VOICE IN THE HEADPHONES is a book-length poem, largely but not exclusively in prose. Following in form Grubbs's previous book, Now the Audience is Assembled, which was about a musical performance, this book takes the reader into the recording booth. The poem takes place within the recording studio and Grubbs's fictional band, The Familiar Faces, surfaces and disappears throughout the text as the poems cycle through the creative process of music making and recording. The basic unit of each piece is the page, and the book presents itself in a hybridized form, recontextualizing contemporary poetry, using the language of recording in the studio as the material for the poem. The book is one continuous poem, flowing and looping through the forms and cycles of a studio recording session. Grubbs describes the process of recording as well as the emotions, tools, and systems that undergird music making. The past arrives in the musician's headphones, and the voice mixes with creativity in a series of loops. The poem loops in and on itself, in a way reminiscent of a record or a CD, returning to the present and to the beat. Grubbs describes his influences and inspirations. The Familiar Faces, his band, recur throughout the book within the lines of each page, which are a metaphor for the studio and the music venue. The reader follows Grubbs's creative journey through double takes. The lines rise and fall with the crescendo of the studio. The book is the rehearsal space, and the music is in each new line. This book will be of interest to music scholars and students, readers of the avant-garde arts, and creative writers"--

Foundations and Theory. Discourses of Recorded Sound : Technologies, Production, Listening, and Conceptualization ; The Ontology of Recorded Sound ; Sound Quality : Reasoning, Action, and Language -- Encyclopedia. Conceptualizing Sound Quality : An Encyclopedia of Selected Sound Terminology. "The sonic qualities that emerge from aesthetic and technological decisions in the recording studio have a major impact on how music sounds, yet our ability to describe this impact on the listening experience is limited. Listeners often use very elaborate metaphors when describing sound quality, such as timbral and spatial characteristics. There is, however, a prevalent belief that metaphors are vague and highly subjective, and therefore unsuitable for academic and more exacting discussions of sound. Making Sense of Recordings challenges this assumption by showing how these metaphors are closely connected to our sonic experience and that they make sense within a larger historical context of technological developments and changing discourses of recorded sound. Part 1 of the book starts by tracing written discourses of recorded sound, discussing how everyday listeners and audio professionals describe their experiences of sound in recorded music. The concept of the listener, as it is theorized here, relates both to the production and reception side of recorded music and assumes some sort of conscious evaluative process where people give meaning to their experiences. Listening is approached from a quality-oriented mode of listening concerned with embodied cognition and is conditioned by the specific listening situation and the specific purpose of listening. Building on cognitive sciences, ideas of embodied cognition, and recent studies in discourse analysis, the book then provides new theoretical and methodological approaches to sound perception and conceptualization with particular relevance to recorded music. The aim is not only to expand on existing histories of studio music technologies, from production to reproduction to reception, but also to provide analytical and practical tools to aid in the understanding and communication of sound discourse in the studio and beyond"--

The literature dealing with the auditory impact of studio-based practices and technologies on the listening experience is scattered and mainly comprises specialised articles inaccessible to most audio professionals and students. 'Making Sense of Recordings' addresses this problem by offering a comprehensive account of sound quality in recorded music. The text presents analytical tools to evaluate recorded sound and describes how the listening experience is reflected, often metaphorically, in language.

"The book addresses how music (especially opera), the phonograph, and film served as cultural agents facilitating the many extraordinary social, artistic, and cultural shifts that characterized the nascent twentieth century and much of what followed long thereafter, even to the present. Three tropes are central: the tensions and traumas...-cultural, social, and personal...-associated with modernity; changes in human subjectivity and its engagement and representation in music and film; and the more general societal impact of modern media, sound recording (the development of the phonograph in particular), and the critical role played by early-century opera recording. A principal focus of the book is the conflicted relationship in Western modernity to nature, particularly as nature is perceived in opposition to culture and articulated through music, film, and sound as agents of fundamental, sometimes shocking transformation. The book considers the sound/vision world of modernity filtered through the lens of aesthetic modernism and rapid technological change, and the impact of both, experienced with the prescient sense that there could be no turning back"...Provided by publisher

Green discs -- Birdland melodies -- Subterranean signals -- Radio's dark ecology -- The run-out groove "The negative environmental effects of media culture are not often acknowledged: the fuel required to keep huge server farms in operation, landfills full of high tech junk, and the extraction of rare minerals for devices reliant on them are just some of the hidden costs of the contemporary mediascape. Eco-Sonic Media brings an ecological critique to the history of sound media technologies in order to amplify the environmental undertones in sound studies and turn up the audio in discussions of greening the media. By looking at early and neglected forms of sound technology, Jacob Smith seeks to create a revisionist, ecologically aware history of sound media. Delving into the history of pre-electronic media like hand-cranked gramophones, comparatively eco-friendly media artifacts such as the shellac discs that preceded the use of petroleum-based vinyl, early forms of portable technology like divining rods, and even the use of songbirds as domestic music machines, Smith builds a scaffolding of historical case studies to demonstrate how 'green media archaeology' can make sound studies vibrate at an ecological frequency while opening the ears of eco-criticism. Throughout this eye-opening and timely book he makes readers more aware of the costs and consequences of their personal media consumption by prompting comparisons with non-digital, non-electronic technologies and by offering different ways in which sound media can become eco-sonic media. In the process, he forges interdisciplinary connections, opens new avenues of research, and poses fresh theoretical questions for scholars and students of media, sound studies, and contemporary environmental history"--Provided by publisher
