"The Queer Fantasies of the American Family Sitcom explores how the fantasies of genre, marketing, and children can never fully cloak the queerness lurking within the plucky families designed for American viewers' comic delight. Queer readings of family sitcoms demolish myths of yesteryear, demonstrating the illusion of American sexual innocence in television's early programs and its lasting consequences in the nation's self-construction, as they also allow fresh insights into the ways in which more recent programs negotiate new visions of sexuality while indebted to previous narrative traditions. Simply put, queer readings of America's domestic sitcoms radically unsettle the nation's simplistic vision of itself, revealing both a deeper vision of its families and of a television genre overwhelmingly dismissed as frivolous fare. Tison Pugh thoroughly explores six specific family sitcoms to illustrate how issues of sexuality intersect with other critical concerns of their respective periods and cultures"--

Abstract: Humour and repetition are in an interesting relationship. Humour depends on that moment when an unexpected incongruous thought surprises us – repetition depends on presenting again what has already been brought forward. Yet jokes often have repetitive structures and catchphrases occur again and again. The apparent tension between the new and the repeated are nowhere better explored than in the American sitcom with a laugh track, a genre of television comedy that is both full of humour and full of repetition. Although both elements are integral to this type of Telecinematic Discourse, the role repetition plays for humour in sitcoms has not previously been fully explored.
In this book, a random sample of such US sitcom episodes with a laugh track – the first and second episodes of Anger Management, Better with you, The McCarthys, Retired at 35, Romantically Challenged, See Dad Run, Sullivan & Son and Undateable – are explored for the repetitive patterns their humour follows. From the microscopic analysis of the individual word that appears twice, to the composition of individual instances of humour, to scenes and to the structure of the narrative of the entire episode, this study discusses repetitive phenomena on different levels of language, taking into account the multimodal and layered context of television viewing as a communicative setting, and in so doing explores the four C’s of sitcom humour: Constitutive, Cohesive, Constructional and Communicative repetition. These functions of repetition are approached based on an incongruity-resolution approach to sitcom humour and informed by the detailed discourse analytic study and discussion of many examples from the data

Beginning with the iconic Indian Head test pattern, which followed television station sign-offs and preceded sign-ons from the mid-1940s to the 1970s, representations of Native Peoples have been a constant presence on TV. This book examines these representations, focusing on situational comedies of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Analysing dozens of sitcoms from the United States and Canada, the book complicates assumptions that Native representations on TV are inherently stereotypical and escapist.

Even though sitcom has been a consistent staple of broadcasting the world over, rigorous academic work on it as a genre remains limited. This book examines sitcom as an industry in terms of production, audiences and texts, drawing on a range of examples and case studies in order to examine the genre's characteristics, social position, and pleasures. In highlighting this long-lasting and popular form of television, it offers insights into genre theory and explores how the comic aim of sitcom forms a central characteristic of the genre. Brett Mills takes a global view of sitcom, examining international examples as well as those produced by the more dominant British and American broadcasting industries, in order to explore the relationships between sitcom, nation, and identity. Sitcoms considered include Extras, My Family, Curb Your Enthusiasm, One Foot in the Grave, Peep Show, Summer Heights High, Popetown, and Friends. Key Features *Draws on original research into the television industry, incorporating interviews with sitcom writers, directors and producers *Includes research on audience responses to sitcom, with reference to offence, pleasure, and social change *Offers detailed textual analyses of a range of programmes, drawing on Humour Theory to explore the ways in which jokes and comic moments work *Outlines the future for sitcom, considering new media developments and the changing relationships between broadcasters and audiences.

The Sitcom explores the production, viewership, and script of this popular genre, drawing on a range of examples and case studies in order to map its characteristics, social significance, and guilty pleasures. Brett Mills takes a global approach, examining international examples as well as British and American broadcasts, isolating the relationships between sitcom, nation, and identity.
