Investors sometimes have strong convictions that a distinctive economic regime will prevail in the period ahead and therefore would like to form a portfolio that reflects the expected returns, standard deviations, and correlations of assets during such a regime. To do so, they typically isolate a subsample of returns in which a regime indicator, such as the rate of economic growth, is above or below a chosen threshold and estimate expected returns, standard deviations, and correlations by equally weighting the observations within the subsample. This approach assumes that every observation within the regime subsample is equally important to forming the estimates whether an observation coincides with a growth rate that is far from the threshold or one that is only marginally distant from the threshold. Moreover, with this approach it is problematic to describe a regime by more than a single indicator because there is no non-arbitrary way to combine the indicators and because the addition of indicators increases the likelihood of producing an empty or overly sparse subsample. The authors apply a new concept called relevance to estimate regime-specific expected returns, standard deviations, and correlations. Their relevance-based approach explicitly accounts for the importance of an observation to forming an estimate, and it seamlessly enables the inclusion of multiple regime indicators in a principled way

It is common practice to forecast social, political, and economic outcomes by polling people about their intentions. This approach is direct, but it can be unreliable in settings where it is hard to identify a representative sample, or where subjects have an incentive to conceal their true intentions or beliefs. The authors propose that, as a substitute or a supplement, forecasters use historical outcomes to predict future ones. The relevance of historical events, however, is not guaranteed. The authors apply a novel technique called Partial Sample Regression to identify, in a mathematically precise way, the subset of events that are most relevant to the present. The outcomes of those events are then weighted by their relevance and averaged to give a prediction for the future. The authors illustrate their technique by showing that it correctly predicted the winner of the last six U.S. presidential elections based only on the political, geopolitical, and economic circumstances of the election year

To understand the design of JPEPA and EFTA, notably the similarities with other FTAs of Japan and EFTA-member countries, respectively, and how these similarities affect Philippine trade, the study proposes the use of text-of-trade-analysis, that is, text analysis employing textas-data. The paper demonstrates the application of text analysis to complement the conventional methods of assessing the impacts of trade agreements. The results reveal that similarity across trade agreements, both at document and chapter or topic-specific provisions (such as trade in goods and rules of origin or strong references to sustainable development) may influence and encourage trade.
