Over the past decade over 350 women around the city of Juárez, Mexico, have been raped and murdered. The remains of these brutalized young women continue to be found scattered in the parched desert, vacant city lots, and roadside ditches. Others are never found. Agosín, through her words and images, invites her readers to bear witness to the reality that the grieving families of the disappeared and murdered young women face every day

This edited volume focuses on developments in recognizing, investigating, and prosecuting cases of sexual violence in (post-)conflict situations from an interdisciplinary angle. The investigation and prosecution of these cases raises new and challenging questions as to how to build evidence, but also how to address victims’ concerns in that process. It addresses innovations and challenges of empirical and other new kinds of social scientific, archival and medical data collection techniques; the development of evidence in relation to charges ranging from sexual violence as a war crime, crime against humanity to genocide; evidentiary and procedural achievements and challenges involved in prosecuting sexual victimization in international courts; and how to create awareness of sexual violence crimes in order to recognize such crimes and to prevent them in the future.

"As the #MeToo movement extends its legal, social, and political reach around the world, the topic of consent has come under scrutiny. Shakespeare on Consent examines crises of consent on the early modern stage and argues that these dramatizations provide a framework for understanding the complex boundaries between coercion, complicity, and choice. Beginning with the premise that the apparatus of consent serves as a lever of entitlement, Amanda Bailey introduces a Shakespeare well aware that liberal selfhood has never been universally available. Organized around concepts such as capacity, compulsion, and refusal, Shakespeare on Consent brings Shakespeare's work into conversation with the Penn State Sandusky scandal, D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky affair, the rise of "somnophilia," Michaela Coel's I May Destroy You, Jordan Peele's documentary on Lorena Bobbitt, Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm, Harvey Weinstein's Shakespeare in Love, and the fallout of NYU's Avital Ronnell case. Delving into topics like the political imagination of rape, the racialization of sexualized bodies, the aestheticization of incapacity, hot sex, the machinery of favouritism, and the right of refusal, Amanda Bailey considers who is denied access to the apparatus of consent, under what circumstances, and how consent is vitiated by race, class, sexuality, disability, and gender. Shakespeare on Consent is a wakeup call for all implicated in the injurious outcomes of consent and a source of inspiration for ingenious workarounds, instances of dissent, and even opportunities for social and political transformation"--

Analyzing early Jewish accounts of the destruction of the Second Temple, Julia Watts Belser illuminates the brutal body costs of Roman conquest. Drawing on disability studies, feminist theory, and new materialist ecological thought, Belser reveals how rabbinic discourses of gender, sexuality, and the body are shaped in the shadow of empire In Rabbinic Tales of Destruction, Julia Watts Belser examines early Jewish accounts of the Roman conquest of Judea. Faced with stories of sexual violence, enslavement, forced prostitution, disability, and bodily risk, Belser argues, our readings of rabbinic narrative must wrestle with the brutal body costs of Roman imperial domination. She brings disability studies, feminist theory, and new materialist ecological thought to accounts of rabbinic catastrophe, revealing how rabbinic discourses of gender, sexuality, and the body are shaped in the shadow of empire. Focusing on the Babylonian Talmud's longest sustained account of the destruction of the Temple, Belser reveals Bavli Gittin's distinctive sex and gender politics. While Palestinian tales frequently castigate the 'wayward woman' for sexual transgressions that imperil the nation, Bavli Gittin's stories do not portray women's sexuality as a cause of catastrophe. The Bavli's resistance to Rome makes a critical difference. While other rabbinic texts commonly inveigh against women's beauty as the cause of sexual sin, Bavli Gittin's tales express a strikingly egalitarian discourse that laments the vulnerability of the beautiful Jewish body before the conqueror. Bavli Gittin's body politics, Belser maintains, align with a significant theological reorientation. While most early Jewish narratives link the destruction of the Temple to communal sin, Bavli Gittin's account does not explain catastrophe as divine chastisement. Instead of imagining God as the architect of Jewish suffering, it evokes God's empathy with the subjugated Jewish body. As it navigates the ruins of Jerusalem, Bavli Gittin forges a sharp critique of empire. Its critical discourse aims to pierce the power politics of Roman conquest, to protest the brutality of imperial dominance, and to make plain the scar that Roman violence leaves upon Jewish flesh.
