    Vergilkommentare der Spätantike wurden unter dem Gesichtspunkt der ihnen zugrunde liegenden literaturtheoretischen Vorstellungen bislang kaum untersucht. Ein Grund liegt in der verbreiteten Auffassung, dass rhetorische Theorie von Literaturtheorie zu trennen sei. Vorstellungen und Begriffe, die aus der Rhetorik geläufig sind, wurden so kaum auf ihre literaturtheoretische Valenz hin untersucht. Ein weiterer Grund dürfte die Tatsache sein, dass das Corpus Servianum nur punktuell literaturtheoretische Beobachtungen enthält und Sprache und Grammatik deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit schenkt. Überdies ist die Terminologie für literaturtheoretische Beobachtungen sehr wenig differenziert. Trotzdem lässt sich erkennen, dass in der Beschäftigung der Spätantike mit Dichtung viele poetologische Kategorien nachwirken, die sich bei Aristoteles, Horaz oder in griechischen Dichterscholien finden. Manche ihrer Konzepte (accessus-ähnlicher Aufbau der Viten; ordo temporum-Theorie; ordo naturalis und artificialis) wurden auch erst im Mittelalter zu voller Entfaltung gebracht. Folgende Themenkomplexe werden in der Dissertation behandelt: Erzählsituation und Erzählperspektive (Kapitel 1), der Stoff der Erzählung (historia und fabula; Kapitel 2), indirekte und direkte Charakterisierung von Figuren (Kapitel 3), Motivierung der Handlung (oeconomia und prooeconomia; Kapitel 4), Aufbau und Struktur der Erzählerrede (Kapitel 5), Aufbau und Struktur der Figurenreden (Kapitel 6), die Funktion von Verweisen auf andere Autoren (Kapitel 7), der historische Autor Vergil (die Vitentradition; Kapitel 8), die biographische Allegorese (Kapitel 9), metapoetische Deutungen (Kapitel 10).
