    In diesem Buch geht es um den Beitrag, den die antike Rhetorik zum normativen Selbstverständnis der Polis und zur politischen Ethik ihrer Zeit leistete. Anders als im neuzeitlichen Kontraktualismus gilt für die antike Ethik die überzeugende Rede als einzige Kraft, die bei besonnenem "Gebrauch" individuelles und kollektives Handeln auf gegenseitige Verständigung einzustellen und durch die Begründung einer rechtlichen Ordnung den Naturzustand roher Gewalt zu überwinden vermag. In Absetzung von der Sophistik profiliert sich die Rhetorik als Alternative insbesondere zur platonischen, jedoch auch zur aristotelischen Philosophie. Der Autor behandelt u.a. die Polis-Ethik des Isokrates, ihre Vorformen bei Solon und Aischylos sowie ihre Parallele bei Xenophon. Herodot, Thukydides und Aristoteles verdeutlichen darüber hinaus Probleme ihrer "Implementierung" und zeigen, dass ihrer Wirkungsmöglichkeit durchaus auch Grenzen gesetzt sind. Dabei geht es um die sozialen Folgen von Gewalt und Überzeugungskraft, das Verhältnis von Verfassungsordnung und Außenpolitik sowie die Herstellung von "Bürgerfreundschaft " als Voraussetzung einer erfolgreichen Verbindung von Macht und Recht. Dank ihrer Verzahnung von Individual- und Institutionenethik und ihrer Kritik an Versuchen, politische Verhältnisse auf der Grundlage eines epistemisch begründeten Gerechtigkeitswissens in der Orientierung an transpolitischen Normen zu gestalten, ist die rhetorisch fundierte Ethik für ein modernes Verständnis demokratischer Politik, die auf öffentliche Rede und eine belastungsfähige Streitkultur angewiesen ist, von Bedeutung.

Spitzers ‚Umgangssprache‘ nimmt einen bis dato unbeachteten Gegenstand in den Blick: die gesprochene Sprache in ihren sozialen und praktischen Gebrauchskontexten, deren systematische Erforschung erst 40 Jahre später nach Erfindung des Tonbandgeräts beginnen wird. Als bilinguale Sammlung bezeugt der vorliegende Band Spitzers weder auf Einzelphilologien beschränktes, noch Literatur- und Sprachwissenschaft trennendes geistiges „Freibeutertum“, das ihn, der als Jude vor den Nazis fliehen musste, zwar institutionell zum Außenseiter, wissenschaftlich hingegen zum Pionier aktueller Sprachforschung macht.

    Der »Phaidros« gehört ohne Zweifel zu den literarisch ansprechendsten Werken Platons. Phaidros, der gerade die Ausführungen des Redenschreibers Lysias gehört hat, will sich zu einem Spaziergang vor die Tore der Stadt begeben und trifft auf der Straße zufällig seinen Freund Sokrates. Beide beschließen, an dem Flüsschen Ilissos spazieren zu gehen, wo sie sich schließlich im Schatten der vielleicht berühmtesten Platane der Weltliteratur niederlassen, um ihr Gespräch zu beginnen. Vordergründig geht es dabei um den Vortrag des Lysias – Phaidros hat sich das Manuskript aushändigen lassen – über Liebesbeziehungen und Freundschaft, über Verliebtheit und die Rolle der Erotik. Sokrates missfallen die Äußerungen des Sophisten, und er setzt spontan zu einer Gegenrede an, der er später eine zweite folgen lässt. Im weiteren Verlauf berührt das Gespräch eine Vielzahl an Themen: Es geht um erotische Ergriffenheit und Wahnsinn, Schönheit und ein neues Seelenverständnis, Rhetorik, Dialektik und Schriftkritik. Manche Texte im »Phaidros« zählen zu den tiefsinnigsten der antiken Philosophie, darunter der berühmte Mythos vom Seelenwagen. Der innere Zusammenhang und das eigentliche Anliegen des Dialogs besteht jedoch in Platons Auseinandersetzung mit der Sophistik, ihren Grundlagen, ihren Methoden und ihren Zielen. Schon im Wechsel des Gesprächsortes, dem Umzug von der Stadt in die Natur, spiegelt sich der Gegensatz von Sophistik und Philosophie; denn anders als der Sophistik, die alles wissen will, geht es Sokrates und Platon vorrangig um den Menschen, um seine Seele und sein Glück. So wird dieser Text, der zu den am meisten rezipierten platonischen Dialogen gehört, auch zu einer Werbeschrift für die Philosophie.

    Drawing on original archival research in the rhetoric of civil rights, the author explores this largely underexamined rhetorical studies site In Liturgy of Change: Rhetorics of the Civil Rights Mass Meeting, Elizabeth Miller examines civil rights mass meetings as a transformative rhetorical, and religious, experience. While rhetorical scholars have analyzed other components of the civil rights movement, including sit-ins, marches, and voter registration campaigns, as well as meeting speeches delivered by well-known figures, the mass meeting itself still is a significant but underexamined site in rhetorical studies. Miller's "liturgy of change" framework brings attention to the pattern of religious genres-song, prayer, and testimony-that structured the events, and the ways these genres created rhetorical opportunities for ordinary people to speak up and develop their activism. To recover and reconstruct these patterns, Miller analyzes archival audio recordings of mass meetings held in Greenville and Hattisburg, Mississippi; Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, Alabama; Savannah, Sumter, and Albany, Georgia; St. Augustine, Florida; and Danville, Virginia

    What can social spaces tell us about social relations in society? How do everyday social spaces like teashops, reading rooms, and libraries reify-or subvert-dominant social structures like caste and gender? These are the questions that this book explores through a study of modern Kerala. Using archival material, discourse analysis, participant observation, and personal interviews, this book traces the transformation of public spaces through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The volume focuses on how "modernity" has also been a struggle for access to public spaces, and non-institutional spaces like teashops, markets, public roads, temple grounds, reading rooms, and libraries have all been crucial to how political culture was shaped, and how dominant hegemonies-caste, class, or capital-have been challenged. It suggests that the secular public sphere that emerged in the last century in Kerala was a result of the constant negotiations between conflicting ideas which were put to test in these social spaces. At a time when digital spaces are fast replacing physical ones, this book is a timely reminder of the struggles that led to the emergence of secular public spaces in Kerala. It contributes to similar studies on public space that have emerged from other parts of the world over the last decades.     Using the socio-political discourse of Kwame Nkrumah, a pioneering Pan-Africanist and Ghana's independence leader, Nartey investigates the notion of political myth-making in a context underexplored in the literature. He examines Nkrumah's construction of a myth described in the book as the Unite or Perish myth (i.e., the idea of a 'United States of Africa' being a prerequisite for the survival of Africa in the post-independence period), exploring the rhetorical resources he deployed, categorizing and analyzing key tropes and metaphors, and setting out the myth's basic components. This book focuses on three areas: an investigation of political myth-making as a social and discursive practice in order to identify particular semiotic practices and linguistic patterns deployed in the construction of mythic discourse; the unpacking of the discursive manifestation, representation, features, and functions of political mythic themes; and finally to propose and implement an integrated discourse analytical framework to account for the complexities of mythic discourse and political narratives in general. It analyzes how Nkrumah deployed his discourse to concurrently construct heroes and villains, protagonists and antagonists, as part of an ideological mechanism aimed at galvanizing support for and instigating action on the part of the masses towards his lifelong African dream.Nartey's book steps out from the conventional domain of critical discourse studies to focus on myth as a form of populist performance. We live in an era where a substantial share of our private and public communication is machinic. Modern computing machines cannot yet speak for themselves-although the capacities of AI are rapidly expanding-but they generate rhetorical energies as they give advice, entertain, and proffer insight, speaking to human concerns in more-than-human ways and guiding human action. In Influential Machines Miles C. Coleman looks beyond human communication to interrogate the ways in which the machines and algorithms in our lives make meaning and the implications of their special modes of communication. Using the varied examples of an anti-vax "vaccine calculator," two Twitterbots, and the computational performances of virtual assistants, Coleman asks what machines mean to us as social agents and whether humans are the appropriate reference for designing machine communication.
