    In Rhetoric, Poetics, and Literary Historiography, Stefan H. Uhlig offers a new account of the emergence of literary studies. Most histories of the early years of the field search for unifying origins of literature as a discipline and object of study. Uhlig turns to the decades around 1800 in Europe to reveal that the inception of the literary field was instead defined by intellectual diversity and contestation. He draws on an array of European writers to show how three schools of literary study-rhetoric teaching, theories of poetry, and literary history-emerged and clashed during this time, offering near-contemporaneous, yet divergent, visions of how to understand literature. Rhetoric and poetics thwarted criticism, to different ends, while literary historiography proved institutionally reassuring yet less useful as a tool for textual understanding.Uhlig details how Scottish writers like Adam Smith and Hugh Blair taught rhetoric as a form self-expression, while Anglophone and German theorists of poetry like William Wordsworth, Friedrich Schlegel, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe both engaged with and resented critics. At the same time, varying opinions on the practice of literary history emerged, with Immanuel Kant and Thomas De Quincey arguing for the independence of literature from historical forces while writers like Matthew Arnold approached literature as a means of narrating cultural archives instead of drawing on close reading and analysis. Rhetoric, Poetics, and Literary Historiography traces current debates in literary studies back to this formative moment, serving as a guide to past and present controversies in the field

    This book is a groundbreaking study of etiquette in the nineteenth century when the success of etiquette books reached unprecedented heights in Britain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States. It positions etiquette as a fully-fledged theoretical concept within the fields of politeness studies and historical pragmatics. After tracing the origin of etiquette back to Spanish court protocol, the analysis takes a novel approach to key aspects of etiquette: its highly coercive and intricate scripts; the liminal rituals of social gatekeeping; the fear for blunders; the obsession with precedence. Interrogating the complex relationship between historical etiquette and adjacent notions of politeness, conduct, morality, convention, and ritual, the study prompts questions on gender stereotyping and class privilege surrounding the present-day etiquette revival. Through adopting a unique comparative approach and a corpus-based methodology this study seeks to revitalise our understandings of etiquette. This book will be of interest to scholars of historical linguistics and pragmatics, as well as those in neighbouring fields such as literary criticism, gender studies and family life, domestic and urban spaces

    Der »Phaidros« gehört ohne Zweifel zu den literarisch ansprechendsten Werken Platons. Phaidros, der gerade die Ausführungen des Redenschreibers Lysias gehört hat, will sich zu einem Spaziergang vor die Tore der Stadt begeben und trifft auf der Straße zufällig seinen Freund Sokrates. Beide beschließen, an dem Flüsschen Ilissos spazieren zu gehen, wo sie sich schließlich im Schatten der vielleicht berühmtesten Platane der Weltliteratur niederlassen, um ihr Gespräch zu beginnen. Vordergründig geht es dabei um den Vortrag des Lysias – Phaidros hat sich das Manuskript aushändigen lassen – über Liebesbeziehungen und Freundschaft, über Verliebtheit und die Rolle der Erotik. Sokrates missfallen die Äußerungen des Sophisten, und er setzt spontan zu einer Gegenrede an, der er später eine zweite folgen lässt. Im weiteren Verlauf berührt das Gespräch eine Vielzahl an Themen: Es geht um erotische Ergriffenheit und Wahnsinn, Schönheit und ein neues Seelenverständnis, Rhetorik, Dialektik und Schriftkritik. Manche Texte im »Phaidros« zählen zu den tiefsinnigsten der antiken Philosophie, darunter der berühmte Mythos vom Seelenwagen. Der innere Zusammenhang und das eigentliche Anliegen des Dialogs besteht jedoch in Platons Auseinandersetzung mit der Sophistik, ihren Grundlagen, ihren Methoden und ihren Zielen. Schon im Wechsel des Gesprächsortes, dem Umzug von der Stadt in die Natur, spiegelt sich der Gegensatz von Sophistik und Philosophie; denn anders als der Sophistik, die alles wissen will, geht es Sokrates und Platon vorrangig um den Menschen, um seine Seele und sein Glück. So wird dieser Text, der zu den am meisten rezipierten platonischen Dialogen gehört, auch zu einer Werbeschrift für die Philosophie.

    Wenn wir Multikulturalität aus der deutsch-polnischen Verflechtungsgeschichte heraus denken, liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf wechselseitigen Interaktionen und Relationen, die vielfach lokal (Danzig, Gleiwitz, Lodz, Warschau) oder regional (Oberschlesien, Ostpreußen) gefasst werden. Auch die longue durée, Kontakte und Erinnerung über mehrere Generationen hinweg, hat dabei eine besondere Bedeutung. Es geht um die gegenseitige Wahrnehmung, die wechselseitige Rezeption, Wissens- und Kulturtransfers, die Zirkulation von Artefakten und die Entstehung gemeinsamer Kommunikationsräume. In dieser räumlichen Gebundenheit, kombiniert mit einer langen zeitlichen Dauer liegt ein entscheidender Anteil der deutsch-polnischen Verflechtungsgeschichte, die in manchen Fällen bis ins Mittelalter zurückreicht und diesen Reflexions- und Erinnerungsraum offenhält. Der von Hans-Jürgen Bömelburg und Izabela Surynt herausgegebene Band zum Phänomen der Multikulturalität versammelt Beiträge deutscher und polnischer Autorinnen und Autoren zu Fragen der Multikulturalität in der Selbstreflexion, in Gesellschaften und Biografien, im Film und in der Literatur.     "This book argues that political persuasion expanded in early imperial China through diverse written genres, and that what ancient Chinese called wenti jingwei, or genre networks, provides the central means to understand rhetoric and government at the time"-- A decolonial reading of Han Dynasty rhetoric reveals the logics and networks that governed early imperial China. In Genre Networks and Empire, Xiaoye You integrates a decolonial and transnational approach to construct a rhetorical history of early imperial China. You centers ancient Chinese rhetoric by focusing on how an imperial matrix of power was established in the Han Dynasty through genres of rhetoric and their embodied circulation, and through epistemic constructs such as the Way, heaven, ritual, and yin-yang. Through the concept of genre networks, derived from both ancient Chinese and Western scholarship, You unlocks the mechanisms of early Chinese imperial bureaucracy and maps their far-reaching influence. He considers the communication of governance, political issues, court consultations, and the regulation of the inner quarters of empire. He closely reads debates among government officials, providing insight into their efforts to govern and legitimize the regime and their embodiment of different schools of thought. Genre Networks and Empire embraces a variety of rhetorical forms, from edicts, exam essays, and commentaries to instruction manuals and memorials. It captures a range of literary styles serving the rhetorical purposes of praise and criticism. In the context of court documentation, these genre networks reflect systems of words in motion, mediated governmental decisions and acts, and forms of governmental logic, strategy, and reason.     Die Studie zeigt ein für Cicero konstitutives Denkmuster in seinen philosophischen Schriften auf und nutzt die Erkenntnisse für eine Interpretation von Ciceros Verständnis von Philosophie und Welt. Grundlage hierfür ist eine Methodik, die in weiten Teilen dem literaturtheoretischen Strukturalismus zugeordnet werden kann, der als Ordnungsangebot aufgefasst wird, um neues Licht auf einen bekannten Klassiker zu werfen. Prinzipiell geht die Arbeit von der Textstruktur aus, in der sich ein dichotomes Denken manifestiert: So lassen sich im Text zunächst begriffliche Gegensatzpaare (binäre Oppositionen) identifizieren. Jedoch ist die strukturale Gegenüberstellung in Ciceros Philosophica immer nur der Ausgangspunkt eines Denkmusters, das von der Analyse (Trennung) zur Synthese (Vereinigung von Getrenntem) fortschreitet. Die Studie erhebt dabei den Anspruch, das abstrahierte Denkmuster Analyse-Synthese als globale Interpretationsfolie für das Philosophieren Ciceros zu beschreiben und anzuwenden.

It positions etiquette as a fully-fledged theoretical concept within the fields of politeness studies and historical pragmatics. After tracing the origin of etiquette back to Spanish court protocol, the analysis takes a novel approach to key aspects of etiquette: its highly coercive and intricate scripts; the liminal rituals of social gatekeeping; the fear for blunders; the obsession with precedence. Interrogating the complex relationship between historical etiquette and adjacent notions of politeness, conduct, morality, convention, and ritual, the study prompts questions on gender stereotyping and class privilege surrounding the present-day etiquette revival. Through adopting a unique comparative approach and a corpus-based methodology this study seeks to revitalise our understandings of etiquette.     The primary goal of this book is to reach a better understanding of how the digital revolution has affected language and discourse practices in the field of law.     Wenn wir Multikulturalität aus der deutsch-polnischen Verflechtungsgeschichte heraus denken, liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf wechselseitigen Interaktionen und Relationen, die vielfach lokal (Danzig, Gleiwitz, Lodz, Warschau) oder regional (Oberschlesien, Ostpreußen) gefasst werden. Auch die longue durée, Kontakte und Erinnerung über mehrere Generationen hinweg, hat dabei eine besondere Bedeutung. Es geht um die gegenseitige Wahrnehmung, die wechselseitige Rezeption, Wissens- und Kulturtransfers, die Zirkulation von Artefakten und die Entstehung gemeinsamer Kommunikationsräume.     Messianismus – die Vorstellung, dass ein Mensch, ein Volk auserwählt ist, Erlösung zu bringen – ist ein zentrales politisches und poetisches Konzept in der Literatur der Romantik. Besonders die polnische Romantik ist davon bestimmt. Wie für die Romantikforschung selbst typisch, wurde das Konzept bislang vorwiegend in nationalphilologischen Studien behandelt. Dieses Buch zeigt den europäischen Kontext von Messianismus in der Literatur der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und trägt damit zu einer europäischen Romantikforschung bei. Methodisch geht die Studie begriffsgeschichtlich vor und zeichnet den theologischen Ursprung und die Übertragung des Konzepts in Politik und Poesie nach.     Cicero verfasste sein philosophisches Œuvre überwiegend in der Form des Dialogs. Der römische Autor schloss dabei nicht nur an eine bedeutende und durch Platon begründete Gattungstradition an, sondern entwickelte diese darüber hinaus kreativ weiter. Die literarische Form erlaubte es ihm, mittels fiktiver Gespräche sowohl römische Vorfahren als auch Zeitgenossen über die Plausibilität und den Wert unterschiedlicher Theorien reflektieren zu lassen. Das Buch widmet sich mit der Analyse der einzelnen Figuren einem konstitutiven Element der durch den Dialog entworfenen Gesprächsräume. Eine zentrale These der Arbeit besteht darin, dass die Dialogfiguren nicht nur eine wichtige Funktion in der auktorialen Selbstdarstellung, sondern auch für die von Cicero beabsichtigte Implementierung griechischer Theoriediskurse in Rom innehaben. Dies manifestiert sich insbesondere in der Interaktion und den historischen Biographien der jeweiligen Figuren.

    In diesem Buch geht es um den Beitrag, den die antike Rhetorik zum normativen Selbstverständnis der Polis und zur politischen Ethik ihrer Zeit leistete. Anders als im neuzeitlichen Kontraktualismus gilt für die antike Ethik die überzeugende Rede als einzige Kraft, die bei besonnenem "Gebrauch" individuelles und kollektives Handeln auf gegenseitige Verständigung einzustellen und durch die Begründung einer rechtlichen Ordnung den Naturzustand roher Gewalt zu überwinden vermag. In Absetzung von der Sophistik profiliert sich die Rhetorik als Alternative insbesondere zur platonischen, jedoch auch zur aristotelischen Philosophie. Der Autor behandelt u.a. die Polis-Ethik des Isokrates, ihre Vorformen bei Solon und Aischylos sowie ihre Parallele bei Xenophon. Herodot, Thukydides und Aristoteles verdeutlichen darüber hinaus Probleme ihrer "Implementierung" und zeigen, dass ihrer Wirkungsmöglichkeit durchaus auch Grenzen gesetzt sind. Dabei geht es um die sozialen Folgen von Gewalt und Überzeugungskraft, das Verhältnis von Verfassungsordnung und Außenpolitik sowie die Herstellung von "Bürgerfreundschaft " als Voraussetzung einer erfolgreichen Verbindung von Macht und Recht. Dank ihrer Verzahnung von Individual- und Institutionenethik und ihrer Kritik an Versuchen, politische Verhältnisse auf der Grundlage eines epistemisch begründeten Gerechtigkeitswissens in der Orientierung an transpolitischen Normen zu gestalten, ist die rhetorisch fundierte Ethik für ein modernes Verständnis demokratischer Politik, die auf öffentliche Rede und eine belastungsfähige Streitkultur angewiesen ist, von Bedeutung.

Spitzers ‚Umgangssprache‘ nimmt einen bis dato unbeachteten Gegenstand in den Blick: die gesprochene Sprache in ihren sozialen und praktischen Gebrauchskontexten, deren systematische Erforschung erst 40 Jahre später nach Erfindung des Tonbandgeräts beginnen wird.
