This book traces the powerful discourses and embodied practices through which Black Caribbean women have been imagined and produced as subjects of British liberal rule and modern freedom. It argues that in seeking to escape liberalism’s gendered and racialised governmentalities, Black women’s everyday self-making practices construct decolonising and feminising epistemologies of freedom. These, in turn, repeatedly interrogate the colonial logics of liberalism and Britishness. Genealogically structured, the book begins with the narratives of freedom and identity presented by Black British Caribbean women. It then analyses critical moments of crisis in British racial rule at home and abroad in which gender and Caribbean women figure as points of concern. Post-war Caribbean immigration to the UK, decolonisation of the British Caribbean and the post-emancipation reconstruction of the British Caribbean loom large in these considerations. In doing all of this, the author unravels the colonial legacies that continue to underwrite contemporary British multicultural anxieties. This thought-provoking work will appeal to students and scholars of social and cultural history, politics, feminism, race and postcoloniality Introduction: Decolonising and Feminising Freedom -- Part I. This book showcases current research that asks a variety of questions: Can goals be activated outside our awareness? How do interpersonal dynamics affect self? How do we maintain a distinctive identity in a group context? Is too much choice or self-determination "bad"? How does self-esteem and morality influence self? Chapter authors discuss the importance of motivation, emotion, and physiological arousal in self-related processes; explore the role of awareness in goal-driven behavior; and describe the interactive influence of social context on self and self on social context. A formal, integrated model of self-regulation is also proposed. This book challenges readers to consider new approaches in studying and thinking about motivation and self. Until now, the image of the Amazons that prevailed in classical antiquity has been predominantly interpreted within the framework of gender discourse. However, as the essays in this volume of conference proceedings demonstrate, Amazons have been paradigmatic in all literary and pictorial genres and through all epochs of antiquity as representatives of various contrast in myth and history, including the familiar and alien, self and other, as well as settled and nomadic. As such, they are a part of very generalized alternative worlds in which constructions of the self and images of the other are co-mingled.

This book examines posttraumatic autobiographical projects, elucidating the complex relationship between the ‘science of trauma’ (and how that idea is understood across various scientific disciplines), and the rhetorical strategies of fragmentation, dissociation, reticence and repetitive troping widely used the representation of traumatic experience. From autobiographical fictions to prison poems, from witness testimony to autography, and from testimonio to war memorials, otherwise dissimilar projects speak of past suffering through a limited and even predictable discourse in search of healing. Drawing on approaches from literary, human rights and cultural studies that highlight relations between trauma, language, meaning and self-hood, and the latest research on the science of trauma from the fields of clinical, behavioral and evolutionary psychology and neuroscience, I read such autobiographical projects not as ‘symptoms’ but as complex interrogative negotiations of trauma and its aftermath: commemorative and performative narratives navigating aesthetic, biological, cultural, linguistic and emotional pressure and inspiration 1. Much of modern thought - philosophical, linguistic, literary, and psychoanalytic - denies the possibility of a unified and whole self. What do such theories imply about how we interpret our freedom? If the self is really as fragmented and fragile as such theories suggest, how can we defend human rights in the world? At a time when these questions are as vital as ever, here is a fascinating series of meditations on human freedom and intellectual responsibility by some of the most challenging thinkers of today. In this first volume of the Oxford Amnesty Lectures, seven leading literary figures - Wayne C. Booth, Helene Cixous, Terry Eagleton, Frank Kermode, Julia Kristeva, Paul Ricoeur, and Edward W. Said - explore the relationship between political freedom and modern conceptions of the self as they address questions of identity, nationalism, politics, ethics, poetic language, and freedom. The speakers represent a comprehensive range of positions in relation to the most vexing ethical issues facing hermeneutic practice today. Taking their inspiration from a variety of perspectives - from psychoanalytic therapy (Kristeva) to women's art (Cixous) to the experience of marginality and dispossession (Said) - each of them seeks in the ashes of the autonomous liberal self a basis for a new ethics from which a new sense of responsibility toward others might be forged. Each tries to construct for him- or herself a way of relating thought and literature to freedom and ethical imperatives in the face of radical questions about the nature of meaning and truth. The volume is a testimony both to the richness of critical thought today and to the commitment of its leading exponents to the issue of human rights.
