    ROMA AETERNA: Rom erhebt wie keine andere Stadt einen Ewigkeitsanspruch. Bereits darin zeigt sich formelhaft ein mythisches Verständnis dieses Ortes. Mit dem „Mythos Rom" sind hier nicht die Geschichten um Aeneas, Romulus und Remus, Herakles, Mars und Rhea Silvia gemeint, vielmehr geht es um das Verständnis der Stadt selbst als Mythos. Es sind Narrative von Aufstieg und Verfall, Neubeginn, Goldenem Zeitalter und Weltherrschaft, denn sie bilden den Mythos Roms als „caput mundi", der das römische Gemeinwesen grundiert. Der „Mythos Rom" artikuliert sich bereits in der Frühzeit der Stadt, fortgesetzt in Variationen und Wiederaufnahmen durch die Jahrhunderte bis in die Gegenwart. Der vorliegende Band stellt fundamentale urbanistische Konzeptionen und monumentale Architekturprogramme, große Zyklen der Malerei und literarische Entwürfe vor, die der „Mythos Rom" speist. Politische Programme beschwören und missbrauchen ebenfalls immer wieder dieses sinnstiftende Prinzip: Der Mythos ist Antrieb kultureller Inszenierungen. Rom produzierte im Lauf der Jahrtausende einen Mythos, der Legitimationsentwürfe für unterschiedlichste Herrschaftsformen hervorbrachte, dazu weltumspannende religiöse Grundsätze ebenso wie ästhetische Vorstellungen. Vom „Mythos Rom" geprägte Rom-Bilder markieren Positionen der Annäherungen an diese Metropole, Annäherungen, die mit historischer Akribie kaum zufriedenstellend zu leisten sind. Dieser Mythos oszilliert zwischen größtem Jubel über die „magnificenza" Roms und tiefster Trauer über Verfall und Vernichtung.Jedes Kapitel wird in einer italienischen und englischen Zusammenfassung vorgestellt.

    The Lure of the Sea is a brilliant account of how the pleasures of the seaside were discovered in the western world, written by one of the most creative historians in Europe today. Well illustrated and accessible, it charts the changes in the popular view of the shore and the rise of the coastal resort as a place of recreation and rest Corbin argues that with few exceptions people living before the eighteenth century knew nothing of the attractions of the coast, the visual delight of the sea, the desire to brave the force of the waves or to feel the coolness of sand against the skin. The image of the ocean in the popular consciousness was coloured by Biblical and mythical recollections of sea monsters, voracious whales, and catastrophic floods. It was perceived as sinister and unchanging, a dark, unfathomable force inspiring horror rather than attraction. These associations of catastrophe and fear in the minds of Europeans intensified the repulsion they felt towards deserted and dismal shores Corbin sets out to show how, with the Enlightenment, a profound change occurred in people's attitudes towards the sea. During the most important period, between 1750 and 1840, the discovery of the seaside as a place of pleasure and relaxation led to the rapid growth of British coastal towns such as Brighton, followed by other resorts in Europe, from Deauville to Marbella and the Greek Isles. With abundant references to the literature and visual arts of the period, Corbin describes the changing habits and fashions of visitors to these resorts, from the patients sent under doctors' orders to bathe in ice-cold sea water, to the women bathers of the nineteenth century who avoided indiscreet gazes by entering the waves through specially designed wagons

    The 1930s concern with recording the speaking voice is virtually unrivaled in American cultural history. In that decade, scores of writers traveled into the field to record the voices of African Americans, American Indians, migrant workers, tenant farmers, and immigrants In this innovative study, Michael E. Staub recasts 1930s cultural history by analyzing those genres so characteristic of the Depression era: genres that relied on a presumed relationship to real experience for their effect and that sought to persuade their audiences of urgent political truths. Demonstrating the seldom-discussed multicultural diversity of Depression-era literature, and paying special attention to narrative strategies for representing the speech of disinherited and minority peoples, Staub shows how several writers from the thirties anticipated dilemmas and perspectives currently engaging cultural studies critics. New interpretations of such canonized authors as James Agee, John Dos Passos, Zora Neale Hurston, John G. Neihardt, and Tillie Olsen are coupled with critical discussions of previously little-known works of ethnography, journalism, oral history, and polemical fiction Voices of Persuasion sheds new light on the relationship between art and politics in the 1930s. It will interest all who are concerned with the problematic relationship between representation and social reality and their mutual inextricability
