    Proceeding from a discussion of striking text-immanent features relating both to form and content, the study examines some 70 German dialogue texts dating from between 1521 and 1525 and inquires into the situative conditions determining the production of these flysheets. It transpires that as a functional genre the Reformation dialogue can be classified as belonging primarily to the genus deliberativum / genus didascale, a specific form of theological rhetoric. Proceeding from a discussion of striking text-immanent features relating both to form and content, the study examines some 70 German dialogue texts dating from between 1521 and 1525 and inquires into the situative conditions determining the production of these flysheets. It transpires that as a functional genre the Reformation dialogue can be classified as belonging primarily to the genus deliberativum / genus didascale, a specific form of theological rhetoric Ausgehend von auffälligen textimmanenten Strukturen formaler wie inhaltlicher Art von ca. 70 deutschsprachigen Dialogtexten, die zwischen 1521 und 1525 entstanden sind, wird nach situativen Bedingungen der Produktion dieser Flugschriften gefragt. Jahrhundert im deutschen Sprachraum erschienener Drucke des Basilius Magnus (329–379) wird die Wirkungsgeschichte der griechischen Patristik exemplarisch untersucht. Druckhistorische, literaturwissenschaftliche und überlieferungsgeschichtliche Analysen erschließen die unterschiedlichen sozialen Funktionsorte der griechisch-lateinischen Editionen und ihrer volkssprachlichen Übertragungen sowie die divergenten Motivationsstränge der Drucker, Herausgeber und Leser. This study radically corrects and fine-hones the generally accepted view of the humanist reception of antiquity. It focuses on the impact of Greek patristics with reference to all the printed works of St. Basil the Great (329–379) published in German-speaking Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. The historical analyses focus on the printing, the literary aspects of the works, and the tradition in which they were handed down from one generation to the next. In so doing, they pinpoint the various social locations in which the Greek/Latin editions and their translations into the vernacular developed their impact. They also cast light on the diverging motives inspiring printers, editors, and readers.

Im zweiten Teil werden die kulturellen und soziologischen Dimensionen der Religionsstreitigkeiten diskutiert. Im dritten Teil werden Formen des polemischen Schreibens in anderen Quellen, etwa Konversionsberichten, Predigten, Liedern und Theaterstücken, untersucht. This study deals with religious controversies of Reformation Germany. The first part focuses on the rhetorical structure of single pamphlets and on the way the pamphlets build up to a controversy with two or more participants. Three case studies illustrate how the controversies worked: 1) the controversy on Martin Luther's »An den christlichen Adel deutscher Nation« (1520), 2) the controversy on Friedrich Staphylus' »Theologiae Martini Lutheri Trimembris Epitome« (1558) first led in Latin and later in German and 3) the controversy on Lucas Osianders »Warnung Vor der Jesuiter blut durstigen Anschlägen« (1585).     The need for a new critical edition of Philip Melanchthon's philosophical works is particularly clear in the case of his writings on rhetoric. That Melanchthon played a central role in the transformation of the ancient discipline has been well established by historians. His writings on rhetoric have proven significant sources for several academic fields, including church history, Scriptural interpretation, the history of science, and the reception of classical literature. Remarkably, two of the three principal writings have not been published in their entirety since the sixteenth century. This volume collects critical editions of the three principal writings to provide a more complete record of Melanchthon’s teaching of rhetoric. It includes critical editions of De Rhetorica (1519), Institutiones Rhetoricae (1521), and Elementa Rhetorices (1531). In addition to the three principal writings, this volume collects a new edition, based on a 1911 edition by Hanns Zwicker, of Dispositiones Rhetoricae (c. 1553), a manuscript compilation of 161 model themes. Scholars will find in this volume the major sources for Melanchthon’s theory and practice of rhetorical instruction.

    The need for a new critical edition of Philip Melanchthon's philosophical works is particularly clear in the case of his writings on rhetoric. That Melanchthon played a central role in the transformation of the ancient discipline has been well established by historians. His writings on rhetoric have proven significant sources for several academic fields, including church history, Scriptural interpretation, the history of science, and the reception of classical literature. Remarkably, two of the three principal writings have not been published in their entirety since the sixteenth century. This volume collects critical editions of the three principal writings to provide a more complete record of Melanchthon’s teaching of rhetoric. It includes critical editions of De Rhetorica (1519), Institutiones Rhetoricae (1521), and Elementa Rhetorices (1531). In addition to the three principal writings, this volume collects a new edition, based on a 1911 edition by Hanns Zwicker, of Dispositiones Rhetoricae (c. 1553), a manuscript compilation of 161 model themes. Scholars will find in this volume the major sources for Melanchthon’s theory and practice of rhetorical instruction.
