Goethe hat sich als Literat von Weltformat ein Leben lang mit seinen bahnbrechenden Ideen der Weltliteratur und Weltpoesie befasst. Diesem Anliegen gab er schließlich im fortgeschrittenen Alter konkrete Form und Gestalt, indem er das Werk West-östlicher Divan im Andenken an die persische Literatur und Kultur sowie vor allem an den persischen Poeten Hafis schuf. Damit hat Goethe faktisch nicht nur als deutscher Literat, sondern zugleich auch als Literatur- und Kulturvermittler zwischen Okzident und Orient fungiert. Goethes Konzept und Botschaft haben bis heute nichts an ihrer Faszination und Aktualität verloren. As a literary figure of world stature, Goethe spent a lifetime working on his pioneering idea of world literature and world poetry. He finally gave this concern concrete form and shape at an advanced age by creating the work West-östlicher Divan in memory of Persian literature and culture and above all the Persian poet Hafis. In this way, Goethe effectively acted not only as a German man of letters, but also as a literary and cultural mediator between the Occident and the Orient. Goethe's concept and message have lost none of their fascination and topicality to this day.
