Ad-hoc networks consisting entirely of simple mobile phones can be used to deploy village level telephony. We investigate a novel application for such networks a peer-to peer community radio service. We envision a system, where any user in the network is equally empowered to generate and distribute audio content to the entire network, using his or her mobile phone. This study concentrates on a critical aspect of this service the choice of the network-wide broadcast protocol. Using extensive simulations, we evaluate the suitability of various broadcast techniques for a rural peer-to-peer mobile adhoc network. Our simulations identify the best choice of protocols under various village network conditions while simultaneously identifying limitations of the current protocols.

The era of literary Modernism coincided with a dramatic expansion of broadcast media throughout Europe that challenged avant-garde writers with new modes of writing and provided them with a new global audience for their work. Historicizing these developments and drawing on new archival research - including from the BBC archives and other important collections - Broadcasting in the Modernist Era explores the ways in which canonical Modernist writers engaged with the new media of Radio and Television. Beginning with an overview of the development of broadcasting technologies in inter-war Europe, the book goes on to consider the radio writing and broadcasts of such writers as Virginia Woolf, Ezra Pound, George Orwell, Jean-Paul Sartre and Gertrude Stein. With chapters written by leading international scholars, the book's archive-based approach opens up new avenues for our understanding of Modernist literature in the mass-media age.

"This collection of essays examines one of the most important, yet understudied, media authors of all time--Norman Corwin--using him as a critical lens to consider the history of multimedia authorship, particularly in the realm of sound. Known for seven decades as the 'poet laureate' of radio, Corwin is most famous for his radio dramas, which reached tens of millions of listeners around the world and contributed to radio drama's success as a mass media form in the 1930s and 1940s. But Corwin was a pioneer in multiple media, including cinema, theater, TV, public service broadcasting, journalism, and even cantata. In each of these areas, Corwin had a distinctive approach to sonic aesthetics and mastery of multiple aspects of media production, relying in part on his inventive atmospheric effects in the studio both prerecorded, and, more impressively, live in real time. From the front lines of World War II to his role as Chief of Special Projects for United Nations Radio and his influence on media today, the political and social aspect of Corwin's work is woven into these essays. With a foreword by Michele Hilmes and contributions from Thomas Doherty, Mary Ann Watson, Shawn VanCour, David Ossman and others, this volume cements Corwin's reputation as perhaps the greatest writer in the history of radio, while also showing that his long career is a neglected model of multimedia authorship."--Provided by publisher Introduction: anatomy of anatomy of sound / Jacob Smith and Neil Verma -- A Corwinography / Jeanette Berard -- Radio's oblong blur: on the Corwinesque in the critical ear / Neil Verma -- Norman Corwin and the blacklist / Thomas Doherty -- Norman Corwin and the big screen: artistic differences / Mary Ann Watson -- Norman Corwin's radio realism / Jacob Smith -- Corwin on television: a transmedia approach to style historiography / Shawn Vancour -- Media primer: Norman Corwin's development of style / Troy Cummings -- Fix your eyes on the horizon and swing your ears about: Corwin's theatre of sound / Ross Brown -- Transatlantic, or Anglo-American Corwin? / Tim Crook -- The odyssey of me and Norman Corwin / David Ossman -- Wondering about Radiolab: the contradictory legacy of Corwin in contemporary "screen radio" / Alex Russo
