    Wie bringt die Graphik der Schrift poetische Sprache zum Ausdruck? Diese Studie untersucht Schrift als genuines lyrisches Darstellungs- und Ausdrucksmittel und gibt Einblick in schriftgraphische Bedeutungsdimensionen. Jahrtausendealter Traditionen visueller Poesie ungeachtet ist die Lyriktheorie noch immer dominant phonozentrisch geprägt. Gegen diese Tendenz richtet die Autorin ihre zentrale These von der Eigenbedeutung lyrischer Schriftlichkeit und erarbeitet ein dezidiert lautsprachenneutrales Konzept der Gedichtschrift jenseits ausgestellter (etwa notationeller, ikonischer oder ideographischer) Visualität. Auf dieser Basis untersucht sie die elementare Schriftpoetik des deutschsprachigen Lyrikers Thomas Kling. Gestützt von der Rekonstruktion exemplarischer Textgenesen zeigt sie, wie ein mediengenuines Konzept der (Gedicht)Schrift für die Lyrikanalyse fruchtbar gemacht werden kann.

Drawing on Theodor Adorno, Alain Robbe-Grillet, and Roland Barthes, Shapiro demonstrates how punctuation's capacity to create unexpected rhythmic pacing makes it an ideal tool for writers, musicians, filmmakers, and artists to challenge structures of power. In works ranging from film scores and jazz compositions to literature, architecture, and photography, Shapiro shows how the use of punctuation reveals the contestability of dominant narratives in ways that prompt readers, viewers, and listeners to reflect on their acceptance of those narratives. Such uses of punctuation, he theorizes, offer models for disrupting structures of authority, thereby fostering the creation of alternative communities of sense from which to base political mobilization.

Based on a thorough study of rhetorical treatises from the Greco-Roman world, the author first develops a set of criteria for delineating the côla and the periods. Using 2 Corinthians 10–13 as a case study, she then examines the extent to which Paul's style complies with the conventions of structuring prose outlined by the ancient rhetoricians. Drawing on Theodor Adorno, Alain Robbe-Grillet, and Roland Barthes, Shapiro demonstrates how punctuation's capacity to create unexpected rhythmic pacing makes it an ideal tool for writers, musicians, filmmakers, and artists to challenge structures of power. In works ranging from film scores and jazz compositions to literature, architecture, and photography, Shapiro shows how the use of punctuation reveals the contestability of dominant narratives in ways that prompt readers, viewers, and listeners to reflect on their acceptance of those narratives. Auf dieser Basis untersucht sie die elementare Schriftpoetik des deutschsprachigen Lyrikers Thomas Kling.
