Prison Narratives from Boethius to Zana critically examines selected works of writers, from the sixth century to the twenty-first century, who were imprisoned for their beliefs. Chapters explore figures' lives, provide close analyses of their works, and offer contextualization of their prison writings. "Philip Edward Phillips has brought together a remarkable collection of perspectives in this sample of extraordinary documents written by people in prison. Some of the most important ideas in human history were hatched in prison and continue to inform our world. Hopefully, this introduction will lead readers to pursue others who did not let prison stifle their thought such as Marco Polo, Jeremiah, Cervantes, Paul, and Martin Luther King, Jr." - Harry Lee Poe, Charles Colson Professor of Faith and Culture, Union University, USA "Prison Narratives from Boethius to Zana encourages readers to educate themselves about very important and relevant topics. This is a unique and timely contribution to the world of letters and the humanities broadly conceived. The roll call of familiar figures, coupled with some less celebrated case studies, reifies and enriches expectations, thereby providing a viable platform for learning more about key incarcerated figures in the Western tradition, as well as about related social and political movements." - William E. Engel, Nick B. Williams Professor of English, Sewanee: The University of the South, USA "The eleven stimulating biographical essays in this collection are certain to prompt readers to reflect on how the experience of being locked up by society for crimes of conscience can unlock a rich and distinctive array of written reflections on society's most fundamental values. Along with the excellent scholarly insights that the essays offer, their authors have provided the perfect introduction to help readers go on to explore the original writings of their subjects, who range from the 6th through the early 21st centuries." - Donald H. Whitfield, Vice-President, The Great Books Foundation.

Salinas is regarded as one of today's most important Chicano poets and human rights activists, but his passage to this place of distinction took him through four of the most brutal prisons in the country. His singular journey from individual alienation to rage to political resistance reflected the social movements occurring inside and outside of prison, making his story both personal and universal. This groundbreaking collection of Salinas' journalism and personal correspondence from his years of incarceration and following his release provides a unique perspective into his spiritual, intellectual, and political metamorphosis. The book also offers an insider's view of the prison rebellion movement and its relation to the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s and 1970s. The numerous letters between Salinas and his family, friends, and potential allies illustrate his burgeoning political awareness of the cause and conditions of his and his comrades' incarceration and their link to the larger political and historical web of social relations between dominant and subaltern groups. These collected pieces, as well as two interviews with Salinas—one conducted upon his release from prison in 1972, the second more than two decades later—reveal to readers the transformation of Salinas from a street hipster to a man seeking to be a part of something larger than himself. Louis Mendoza has painstakingly compiled a body of work that is autobiographical, politically insurgent, and representative

Prison Writing and the Literary World tackles international prison writingand writing about imprisonment in relation to questions of literary representationand formal aesthetics, the value or values of literature, textual censorship and circulation, institutional networks and literary-criticalmethodologies. It offers scholarly essays exploring prison writingin relation to wartime internment, political imprisonment, resistance andindependence creation, regimes of terror, and personal narratives of developmentand awakening that grapple with race, class and gender. Cuttingacross geospatial divides while drawing on nation- and region-specific expertise,it asks readers to connect the questions, examples and challengesarising from prison writing and writing about imprisonment within theUK and the USA, but also across continental Europe, Stalinist Russia, theAmericas, Africa and the Middle East. It also includes critical reflectionpieces from authors, editors, educators and theatre practitioners with experienceof the fraught, testing and potentially inspiring links between prisonand the literary world
