The illustrated press in its sociopolitical context -- The production of illustrations in content -- Making history -- Feeding memories -- Preparing for war coverage -- Managing the unexpected, boosting national feelings

"Using the press coverage of the Franco-Prussian war as a starting point, Michele Martin's Images at War examines nineteenth-century illustrated periodicals published in France, Germany, England, and Canada (with references also to Italy and the United States), and argues that during that era they worked to reinforce particular national identities." "The images that appeared played an essential role in how the concept of nationalism was expressed and reproduced, usually by pitting cultures and countries against one another. These illustrated periodicals helped to shape nations where nations had not previously existed - such as Germany, Italy, and Canada, which were only just coming into their own as states. In war, Martin observes, these documents also represented a non-verbal method of communicating emotionally trying, politically challenging, and oftentimes contradictory information to the public, literate and non-literate alike." "The history of nineteenth-century illustrated papers underscores their legitimacy as a form of journalism. They were more than a commodity produced for profit; they offered serious reflection and commentary designed by editors to have specific effects on the readers. Images at War is a study of this early news medium and its part in the construction of nationalism in the midst of war."--Jacket

Introduction -- Richard Ford and Ian McEwan: transactors and redeemers -- Narratives of retrogenesis and abstraction -- Paul Auster: after the past -- The long view -- The end of the decade -- Coda: in the realm of the real. Writing the 9/11 Decade" investigates the relation of the novel to reportage, and the role of both in shaping culture, by looking at novelists' journalistic responses to 9/11. Journalist, academic and literary critic Charlie Lee-Potter argues that novelists were entrapped by the expectation that they would provide an immediate non-fiction response to the September 11 attacks. Jonathan Lethem expressed the plaintive view that 'most of the novelists in New York were asked by one magazine or another to write something, and to me it seems our voices, at that moment, blended into one vast impotent scream'. Beginning with an examination of the sometimes mawkish literary journalism that emerged in the days after the attacks, Writing the 9/11 Decade traces its evolution-in writers such as Ian McEwan, Paul Auster, Don DeLillo, Mohsin Hamid, and Nadeem Aslam-into new literary methods of subsuming the disaster, while attempting to stand apart from it. In assessing the novel's capacity to respond to and contain an unimagined traumatic event, "Writing the 9/11 Decade" stands as a contemporary history of the form

"Congress, the Press, and Political Accountability is the first large-scale examination of how local media outlets cover members of the United States Congress. Using three samples of local newspapers from across the country, Arnold analyzes all coverage over a two-year period - every news story, editorial, opinion column, letter, and list." "The results show enormous variation in coverage. Some newspapers cover legislators frequently, thoroughly, and accessibly. Others - some of them famous for their national coverage - largely ignore local representatives. The analysis also confirms that only those incumbents or challengers in the most competitive races, and those who command huge sums of money, receive extensive coverage."--BOOK JACKET

"What makes a magazine in South Africa promote Scandinavian unity among its immigrant readers and why does a Swedish king endorse attempts to influence pan-Scandinavian opinion through a transnational media event in Sweden, Norway and Denmark? Can portraits of exotic Lapplanders in the British press, enthusiastic accounts of the welfare state in post-war travel literature and descriptions of the liberal Nordic woman as a metaphor for a freer society in Franco Spain really be bundled together under a joint label of 'Nordicness'? How is it that despite the variety of images of the Nordic region that are circulating, we still find this recurring idea of a shared Nordic identity? These are some of the questions the current volume seeks to answer. Covering the time period from the early nineteenth century up until the present and encompassing case studies from Britain, Spain, Poland, and South Africa, as well as from the Nordic countries, contributors to the volume investigate the images that have been presented of the Nordic region in the media in and outside of the Nordic countries, how such images have been shaped by mechanisms of mediation, and the channels through which they have been distributed. The chapters address both specific cases such as media events and individual publications, as well as the structural and institutional settings for mediating the Nordic region."--Provided by publisher
