ger: Elvis into GermanEine kritische Analyse der Übersetzungsweise von Elvis Presleys Songtexten im deutschsprachigen RaumElvis Presley war und ist eine einzigartige Persönlichkeit, über die bereits eine Vielzahl von Arbeiten verfasst wurde. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit beschreitet einen neuen Weg der Forschung auf diesem Gebiet, indem sie eine Analyse der Übersetzungsweise der von ihm gesungenen Songtexte ins Deutsche vorlegt. Während die Ausgangstexte dem rebellischen Rock and Roll bzw. den Genres, auf welchen dieser basiert, zuzuordnen sind, können die Zieltexte als harmonieorientierte deutsche Schlager klassifiziert werden.Ein selbst erstelltes Klassifikationsschema, das die Bereiche ?Form? und ?Inhalt? berücksichtigt, ermöglicht die Einteilung der ausgewählten Lieder und deren deutschen Pendants in die Kategorien ?textnahe Übersetzungen?, ?freiere Übersetzungen? und ?Kontrafakturen?. Während im Zuge der Analyse nur ein Song der ersten Kategorie zugeordnet werden konnte, teilen sich die anderen in gleichem Verhältnis auf die weiteren Kategorien auf. Rock and Roll-Songs finden sich in allen Kategorien, was den Schluss zulässt, dass keine einheitliche Übersetzungsstrategie hinsichtlich der Lieder dieses Genres besteht. Aufgrund der soziokulturellen Gegebenheiten des ausgangs- bzw. zielsprachlichen Raums und der Images der Künstler, einerseits des rebellischen Elvis Presley, andererseits der relativ angepassten Schlagerinterpreten, ist jedoch in allen untersuchten Fällen eine Abschwächung sexueller Inhalte im Zuge des Übersetzungsprozesses zu beobachten. Weiters wird in den Ausgangstexten explizit geäußerte Gesellschaftskritik in den Zieltexten in einem etwas entschärften Maße zum Ausdruck gebracht.Die gesamte Analyse zeigt, dass inhaltliche Adaptionen, sowie formale Veränderungen, oftmals notwendig waren, um den Übersetzungen von Elvis Presleys Songtexten im deutschsprachigen Raum ebenfalls eine Art Hitgarantie mit auf den Weg geben zu können. eng: Elvis into GermanA critical analysis of how Elvis Presley?s song texts are translated into GermanElvis Presley can be characterized as one of the most important rock/pop musicians of the 1950s and 60s, and is still well-known nowadays. Many scholars, musicologists and students have studied his life and his music at great length. The aim of this thesis is to take a new path in research, i.e. to deal with how Elvis Presley?s song texts are translated into German and thus how rebellious Rock and Roll is transposed to the genre ?Schlager?, which puts the focus on social harmony and a collective search for happiness.The present analysis of nine songs and their German equivalents is based on certain criteria concerning ?form? and ?content? which help to classify them into three categories, namely ?word-for-word translations?, ?loose translations? and ?Kontrafakturen?. The results of this analysis, dealing with differences and similarities between the source texts and the target texts, show that only one song can be placed in the first category, while the others are equally distributed over the second and the third one. Rock and Roll songs can be found in all categories. Therefore the conclusion is justified that there exists no consistent way of translating such songs. Attenuation and toning down of sexual statements, which play a central role, are due to socio-cultural differences between the source country and the target countries and to the different images of the various interpreters of the songs. While the rebellious Elvis was regarded as a sex symbol, German singers were presented as socially more adapted. Additionally, social critique was not as openly expressed in the German-speaking area as was the case in the US.The present analysis makes clear that word-for-word translations were almost an impossibility because content, and therefore form too, had to be changed to guarantee that the songs could become hits in German speaking areas.
