Preliminary Material -- Acknowledgements -- Titles of Collections -- René Char: 1907–1988 -- Introduction -- Surrealism and Beyond: Kandinsky, Dali, Corot, Courbet -- Picasso Reviewed: from Fact to Myth -- New Horizons: “Presenting Georges Braque” -- The Fantastic Realism of Joan Miró -- Georges de La Tour: Artist of Light and Shade -- The Magic of Lascaux -- Nicolas de Staël: Seeker of Summits, Child of the Pole Star -- Vieira da Silva: A Web of Connections -- The Last Collections: Vincent Van Gogh and Alexandre Galperine -- The Illumination of the Poet -- Dramatis Personæ -- Selective Bibliography -- Index. In 1980 an exhibition of the Illuminated Manuscripts of René Char held in Paris took the artistic and literary worlds by surprise. It featured illustrations by twenty-eight artists of an array of Char’s hand-written poems. Char’s artistic associations, spanning seven decades, remain remarkable today. Not only was he amply illustrated by those he called his “substantial allies”; the dedicatory poems and prose pieces they inspired, written with revelatory flair, constitute a unique corpus in the history of art and poetic enterprise. This book brings together an exemplary number of the artists Char prized over time: Dali and Kandinsky in the early years; later, Picasso, Braque and Miró; yet later, Vieira da Silva, Nicolas de Staël and Alexandre Galperine. It also considers the poet’s fascination with Corot, Courbet, La Tour, Van Gogh and the cave art of Lascaux

Upon his death in 1898, the French Symbolist poet Stephane Mallarmé (b. 1842) left behind a body of published work which though modest in quantity was to have a seminal influence on subsequent poetry and aesthetic theory. He also enjoyed an unparalleled reputation for extending help and encouragement to those who sought him out. Rosemary Lloyd has produced a fascinating literary biography of the poet and his period, offering a subtle exploration of the mind and letters of one of the giants of modern European poetry.Every Tuesday, from the late 1870s on, Mallarmé hosted gatherings that became famous as the "Mardis" and that were attended by a cross section of significant writers, artists, thinkers, and musicians in fin-de-siecle France, England, and Belgium. Through these gatherings and especially through a voluminous correspondence—eventually collected in eleven volumes—Mallarmé developed and recorded his friendships with Paul Valery, Andre Gide, Berthe Morisot, and many others. Attractively written and scrupulously documented, Mallarme: The Poet and His Circle is unique in offering a biographical account of the poet's literary practice and aesthetics which centers on that correspondence

The contradictions of Verlaine's nature are mirrored in his verse, which is alternately mystic, sensuous, exquisite and prosaic. He had extraordinary lyric powers; he was a master of eerie harmonies such as few other poets have achieved, and, in Sagesse, he produced religious verse which challenges comparison with the very best of its kind. Yet here and there can be found a curious weakening in the texture of thought and inspiration: he turns and twists, takes flight, seeks reassurance in platitude and convention - marriage, dogmatic theology, reactionary political creeds. He is even capable of lamenting (as Rimbaud shows him in Une Saison en Enfer) the emotional and poetic experiments which give his work its supreme value. It is almost as though he were afraid of his own talent. The explanation, as far as there is one, lies in a combination of personality and circumstance. This biography attempts to explore the ";parallels"; (Verlaine's own term) between his life and his poetry. Nearly everything he produced, whether good or bad, was a reflection of some crisis of thought or feeling. No one demonstrates better than Verlaine the antinomies between the artist and his work, between the man and the genius; and in every case we are obliged to admit that the one explains the other. Without the weakness and the squalor we might indeed have had a rational human being and a good husband for Mathilde Mauté, but we should have had no poet, or no poet like Paul Verlaine. Professor Carter concentrates on the combination of Verlaine's personality and experiences that produced some of the most brilliant poetry in the French language. The result is one of the best critical biographies of Verlaine published to date

Rimbaud the Son, widely celebrated upon its publication in France, investigates the life of a writer, the writing life, and the art of life-writing. Pierre Michon in his groundbreaking work examines the storied life of the French poet Arthur Rimbaud by means of a new literary genre: a meditation on the life of a legend as witnessed by his contemporaries, those who knew him before the legends took hold. Michon introduces us to Rimbaud the son, friend, schoolboy, renegade, drunk, sexual libertine, visionary, and ultimately poet. Michon focuses no less on the creative act: What presses a person to write? To pursue excellence? The author dramatizes the life of a genius whose sufferings are enormous while his ambitions are transcendent, whose life is lived with utter intensity and purpose but also disorder and dissolution-as if the very substance of life is its undoing. Rimbaud the Son is now masterfully translated into English, enabling a wide new audience to discover for themselves the author Publishers Weekly called “one of the best-kept secrets of modern French prose

The author offers illuminating readings, critiques of translations, and her own translations of Baudelaire's "world", understood here to include all his works of poetry (both verse and prose), criticism, and correspondence. The study considers the poet's work in its richly textured biographical, historical, and cultural context. At the same time, the author is careful to resist the temptation of facile readings that would unequivocally proclaim a simple inspiration behind a given text.
