    Ausgehend von der Tatsache, dass Medizingeschichte neben Konzeptionsgeschichte vor allem Personengeschichte ist, beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Studie mit einem solchen biographischen Aspekt: dem "Tod im ärztlichen Stand" (Vierordt 1926). Das Phänomen des Todes mit allen seinen biologischen, philosophischen, soziologischen und theologischen Facetten hat stets allgemeines Interesse gefunden. Seine Faszination verstärkt sich noch dadurch, dass es sich hier um diejenigen handelt, die dem Tod berufsmässig den Kampf angesagt haben und dass seine Art eine gewaltsame ist. Anhand von 200 Biographien wird geschildert, wie glänzende Karrieren ein tragisches Ende finden, wie dunkle Gestalten im Arztgewand den Hippokratischen Eid ad absurdum führen, wie eng das Gute und das Böse beieinander liegen. Im ersten Teil des Buches werden einige spektakuläre Todesarten wie Selbstmord, Mord, Totschlag, Hinrichtungen, Unglücksfälle und Drogentod thematisiert (52 Porträts). Der zweite Teil besteht in einem alphabetisch geordneten biographischen Lexikon mit 148 Einträgen. Die Suizide erhalten, nicht zuletzt infolge der politischen Umstände, ein besonderes Gewicht. Sie verdeutlichen auch exemplarisch den Widerspruch zwischen dem ureigensten ärztlichen Anliegen, Leben zu erhalten und den Tod so lange wie möglich zu verhindern, und der schrecklichen Tat, das dazu bestimmte Leben von eigener Hand auszulöschen.
