    El texto explora si existe alguna causalidad entre la presencia y la relevancia de los partidos étnicos (PE) en seis países latinoamericanos y las "condiciones favorables" que indican diversas perspectivas de la literatura sobre acción colectiva. Para ello se realiza un análisis cualitativo multicausal orientado a los casos y a las variables que usa la lógica booleana para simplificar estructuras de datos complejos de forma sistemática. Con ello se trata de identificar la variedad de pautas causales de la presencia y éxito de los PE en Bolivia, Ecuador y Nicaragua, y no en Guatemala, México y Perú. (Rev Mex Sociol/GIGA)

    The basic patterns of the initial Indonesian party system have reemerged after more than four decades of authoritarianism. The cleavage model by Lipset and Rokkan is well-suited to analyzing the genesis of and the most salient features of this party system. However, in applying the approach, some adjustments have to be made. For instance, the national and industrial revolutions have to be conceived of differently. Moreover, it is useful to distinguish critical phases in the formation of parties. The four cleavages have to be reinterpreted and additional ones need to be identified. In Indonesia, economic cleavages are hardly significant in conflicts between political parties (especially the "capital" versus "labour" cleavage) or are expressed in terms of religion or allegiance to political leaders based in a specific region ("urban" versus "rural"). In addition, in comparison with 1999 and particularly with the 1950s, today's cleavages are less marked. Thus, the Lipset- Rokkan model has to be combined with other approaches which underline the importance of clientelism and the dealignment of parties. -- Indonesia ; party system ; cleavages ; historical analysis Grundlegende Strukturen des indonesischen Parteiensystems haben sich nach über vier Jahrzehnten autoritärer Herrschaft erneut herausgebildet. Zur Analyse der Entwicklung und der wichtigsten Merkmale dieses Parteiensystems ist das Cleavage- oder Konfliktlinienmodell von Lipset und Rokkan gut geeignet. Bei der Anwendung dieses Ansatzes sollten allerdings einige Anpassungen vorgenommen werden. Die nationale und die industrielle Revolution verliefen anders. Zudem ist es wichtig, verschiedene kritische Phasen der Parteienbildung voneinander zu unterscheiden. Die vier Konfliktlinien im ursprünglichen Lipset/Rokkan-Modell müssen in Indonesien neu konzipiert werden. Ökonomische Cleavages sind entweder von geringer Bedeutung in den parteipolitischen Auseinandersetzungen (insbesondere "Kapital" versus "Arbeit") oder werden primär in einer religiösen Begrifflichkeit artikuliert ("Stadt" versus "Land"). Konfliktlinien sind heute im Vergleich zu 1999 und besonders zu den 1950er Jahren weniger deutlich ausgeprägt. Das Modell muss daher mit Ansätzen kombiniert werden, welche die Bedeutung klientelistischer Strukturen und die sich abschwächende Verwurzelung der Parteien in sozialen Milieus hervorheben.

    This paper analyzes the role of ethnicity in shaping the character of Kenya's political parties and its party system since 1992. Drawing on a constructivist conception of ethnicity, it uses a framework of comparison derived from Donald Horowitz and distinguishes between three party types: the mono-ethnic party, the multi-ethnic alliance type and the multi-ethnic integrative type. It shows that although Kenyan parties have increasingly incorporated diverse communities, they have consistently failed to bridge the country's dominant ethnic cleavages. Consequently, all of Kenya's significant parties represent ethnic coalitions of convenience and commitment and, thus, ethnic parties. The paper further states that the country's post-2007 political environment is a by-product of the omnipresence of this party type. -- Social cleavages ; ethnicity ; political party identification ; Kenya Afrikanische Parteien wurden in der Literatur nur sehr vereinzelt systematisch untersucht. Allerdings wird generell Ethnizität eine große Bedeutung bei der Klassifizierung afrikanischer Parteien zugemessen. Die vorliegende Analyse bestätigt dies für Kenia. Auf der Grundlage von Donald Horowitz-Theorie über politischen Wettbewerb in multiethnischen Gesellschaften werden in der Untersuchung des Einflusses von Ethnizität auf politische Parteien drei Parteitypen unterschieden: die monoethnische Partei, die multiethnische Allianz und die multiethnische integrative Partei. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass seit 1992 alle politisch signifikanten Parteien kurzlebige ethnische Koalitionen darstellen. Diese haben seit Einführung des Mehrparteiensystems Konfliktlinien zwischen ethnischen Gruppen verstärkt. Gewaltsame ethnische Konflikte, wie sie nach den Wahlen im Dezember 2007 zu beobachten waren, sind eine Folgeerscheinung dieser Koalitionen.

    The institutionalization of political parties is said to be important for democratic development, but its measurement has remained a neglected area of research. We understand the institutionalization of political organizations as progress in four dimensions: roots in society, level of organization, autonomy, and coherence. On this basis we construct an Index of the Institutionalization of Parties (IIP), which we apply to 28 African political parties. The IIP uses extensive GIGA survey and fieldwork data. Initial results reveal a more differentiated degree of institutionalization than is commonly assumed. In addition to illustrating overall deficits in party institutionalization, the IIP highlights an astonishing variance between individual parties and - to a lesser extent - between national aggregates. Further research on party institutionalization remains necessary, particularly regarding its causes and consequences. -- Political parties ; sub-Saharan Africa ; institutionalization ; stability ; legitimacy Die Institutionalisierung politischer Parteien wird als wichtiger Faktor für die Demokratieentwicklung bezeichnet, deren Messung wurde in der Forschung jedoch vernachlässigt. In diesem Artikel wird die Institutionalisierung politischer Organisationen als fortschreitende Verstärkung der Verwurzelung in der Gesellschaft, des Organisationsniveaus, der Autonomie und Kohärenz verstanden. Auf dieser Grundlage schlagen wir ein neues Messinstrument für die Institutionalisierung von Parteien vor. Dieser Index der Institutionalisierung von Partien (IIP) wird anschließend auf 28 afrikanische Parteien angewendet. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Institutionalisierung politischer Parteien in Afrika wesentlich differenzierter zu betrachten ist als bisher angenommen. Neben der Darstellung allgemeiner Defizite in der Institutionalisierung der Parteien enthüllt der IIP auch erstaunliche Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Parteien und untersuchten Ländern insgesamt. Zukünftige Forschung sollte sich besonders der Ursachen- und Wirkungsanalyse widmen.
