    To understand the force Shelley has exerted in our literary and political culture, we must first dispel the image of him, promoted by the ruling class of nineteenth-century Britain, as the author of fragile and ineffectual lyrics. The starting point of Ronald Tetreault's analysis is the view of Yeats, who admired Shelley and described Shelley was more an artist than he was either a philosopher or a politician; while philosophical and political issues are often material from which he makes his poetry, there are formal and final causes in his work that define him more precisely as a poet. A tireless experimenter with poetic form, Shelley throughout this career sought a rhetorical vehicle adequate to his vision. The major published lyrics of Shelley's great Italian period are by no means art for art's sake; they are poems artfully designed to make things happen, lyrics that employ speech to dramatize an unfolding process in the poet's mind and to project that process outward toward an audience. Shelley's eventual adoption of dramatic form was the practical artistic consequence of his mythopoetic mode, the strategy by which he solved the creative problem of poetic narcissism, and the instrument with which he made his poetry into a social discourse. It is through the drama's decentred form that Shelley finally legitimates his language of desire

    The first book of its kind, Out of What Began traces the development of a distinctive tradition of Irish poetry over the course of three centuries. Beginning with Jonathan Swift in the early eighteenth century and concluding with such contemporary poets as Seamus Heaney and Eavan Boland, Gregory A. Schirmer looks at the work of nearly a hundred poets. Considering the evolving political and social environments in which they lived and wrote, Schirmer shows how Irish poetry and culture have come to be shaped by the struggle to define Irish identity.Schirmer includes a large number of accomplished poets who have been unjustly neglected in standard accounts of Irish literature; many of these writers are women, whose work has been kept in the shadows cast by that of well-known male poets. He also emphasizes the importance of political poetry in a country that continues to be torn by sectarian violence.     In recent years, New Historicists have situated the iconoclasm of Milton's poetry and prose within the context of political, cultural, and philosophical discourses that foreshadow early modernism. In Carnal Rhetoric, Lana Cable carries these investigations further by exploring the iconoclastic impulse in Milton's works through detailed analyses of his use of metaphor. Building on a provocative iconoclastic theory of metaphor, she breaks new ground in the area of affective stylistics, not only as it pertains to the writings of Milton but also to all expressive language.Cable traces the development of Milton's iconoclastic poetics from its roots in the antiprelatical tracts, through the divorce tracts and Areopagitica, to its fullest dramatic representation in Eikonoklastes and Samson Agonistes. Arguing that, like every creative act, metaphor is by nature a radical and self-transgressing agent of change, she explores the site where metaphoric language and imaginative desire merge. Examining the demands Milton places on metaphor, particularly his emphasis on language as a vehicle for mortal redemption, Cable demonstrates the ways in which metaphor acts for him as that creative and radical agent of change.     This volume offers a coherent view of post-romantic poetic development through selective examples both of individual poems and of poetic influence. Bornstein focuses most centrally on Browning in the Victorian period and Yeats and Pound in the Modern, but also looks more briefly at works by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, Arnold, Tennyson, and Eliot. The introductory manifesto, ";Four Gaps in Postromantic Influence Study,"; posits four new orientations for such work: taking the volume (rather than the individual poem) as a unit; stressing more centrally the Victorian mediation between Romantic and Modern; allowing for national differences among English, Irish, and American traditions; and basing influence studies as much on manuscript materials as on finished products. Each of the following chapters follows one or more of those orientations.The initial four chapters, ";Remaking Poetry,"; focus on readings of specific poetic texts. The first treats Browning's first major volume as a unit; the second reads his dramatic monologue ";Pictor Ignotus"; against Romantic acts of mind; the third maps distinctively Victorian variations in the major form known as Greater Romantic Lyric; and the fourth explores Yeats's mature revision of that form. The second group of four chapters, ";Remaking Poets,"; stresses the dynamics of literary influence by which poets turn their forerunners into figures helpful to their own development. The first three examine Yeats's encounter with Dante, Spenser, Browning, and Tennyson, respectively; the fourth treats Pound's remaking of the poet he called his poetic ";father,"; Browning, in a way that suggests the limits of anxiety models of poetic influence.For this volume Professor Bornstein has revised and expanded a select group of his recent essays and added a new one, on the Greater Victorian Lyric.

    This volume offers a coherent view of post-romantic poetic development through selective examples both of individual poems and of poetic influence. Bornstein focuses most centrally on Browning in the Victorian period and Yeats and Pound in the Modern, but also looks more briefly at works by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, Arnold, Tennyson, and Eliot. The introductory manifesto, ";Four Gaps in Postromantic Influence Study,"; posits four new orientations for such work: taking the volume (rather than the individual poem) as a unit; stressing more centrally the Victorian mediation between Romantic and Modern; allowing for national differences among English, Irish, and American traditions; and basing influence studies as much on manuscript materials as on finished products. Each of the following chapters follows one or more of those orientations.The initial four chapters, ";Remaking Poetry,"; focus on readings of specific poetic texts. The first treats Browning's first major volume as a unit; the second reads his dramatic monologue ";Pictor Ignotus"; against Romantic acts of mind; the third maps distinctively Victorian variations in the major form known as Greater Romantic Lyric; and the fourth explores Yeats's mature revision of that form.     In recent years, New Historicists have situated the iconoclasm of Milton's poetry and prose within the context of political, cultural, and philosophical discourses that foreshadow early modernism. In Carnal Rhetoric, Lana Cable carries these investigations further by exploring the iconoclastic impulse in Milton's works through detailed analyses of his use of metaphor. Building on a provocative iconoclastic theory of metaphor, she breaks new ground in the area of affective stylistics, not only as it pertains to the writings of Milton but also to all expressive language.Cable traces the development of Milton's iconoclastic poetics from its roots in the antiprelatical tracts, through the divorce tracts and Areopagitica, to its fullest dramatic representation in Eikonoklastes and Samson Agonistes. Arguing that, like every creative act, metaphor is by nature a radical and self-transgressing agent of change, she explores the site where metaphoric language and imaginative desire merge. Examining the demands Milton places on metaphor, particularly his emphasis on language as a vehicle for mortal redemption, Cable demonstrates the ways in which metaphor acts for him as that creative and radical agent of change.     To understand the force Shelley has exerted in our literary and political culture, we must first dispel the image of him, promoted by the ruling class of nineteenth-century Britain, as the author of fragile and ineffectual lyrics. The starting point of Ronald Tetreault's analysis is the view of Yeats, who admired Shelley and described Shelley was more an artist than he was either a philosopher or a politician; while philosophical and political issues are often material from which he makes his poetry, there are formal and final causes in his work that define him more precisely as a poet. A tireless experimenter with poetic form, Shelley throughout this career sought a rhetorical vehicle adequate to his vision. The major published lyrics of Shelley's great Italian period are by no means art for art's sake; they are poems artfully designed to make things happen, lyrics that employ speech to dramatize an unfolding process in the poet's mind and to project that process outward toward an audience. Shelley's eventual adoption of dramatic form was the practical artistic consequence of his mythopoetic mode, the strategy by which he solved the creative problem of poetic narcissism, and the instrument with which he made his poetry into a social discourse. It is through the drama's decentred form that Shelley finally legitimates his language of desire

    This pathbreaking book dismantles the stereotype of Spenser as one who blurs earlier epic traditions. John Watkins's examinations of Spenser's major poetry reveal a poet keenly attuned to dissonances among his classical, medieval, and early modern sources. By bringing Virgil into an intertextual dialogue with Chaucer, Ariosto, and Tasso, and several Neo-Latin commentators, Spenser transformed the most patriarchal of genres into a vehicle for praising the Virgin Queen.In an opening survey of the epic's descent from Homer, Watkins redefines epic as a genre that earns its prestige by stigmatizing other literary forms. In recounting Aeneas's abandonment of Dido, Virgil commemorated his own rejection of Homeric romance. Later poets retold Dido's story as a fictional account of their own poetic genesis and thus entered the Virgilian epic succession. Spenser joins their ranks by organizing his major poetry around multiple revisions of Dido's tragedy. But unlike his continental precursors, Spenser never commits himself to a single interpretation of Dido's moral, political, or aesthetic significance. By undertaking an unresolvable quest for Virgilian authority, Spenser transforms epic into a form that embraces alternative views of its own generic nature

Freely admitting his own youthful bafflement with poetry, Bennett reassures us that the poets and poems in this volume are not only accessible but also highly enjoyable. He then proceeds to prove irresistibly that this is so.   Bennett selects more than seventy poems by Thomas Hardy, A. E. Housman, John Betjeman, W. H. Auden, Louis MacNeice, and Philip Larkin. He peppers his discussion of these writers and their verse with anecdotes, shrewd appraisal, and telling biographical detail: Hardy lyrically recalls his first wife, Emma, in his poetry, although he treated her shabbily in real life. The fabled Auden was a formidable and off-putting figure at the lectern.
