    This book analyses representations of East Asia, mainly China and Japan, in selected Anglophone novels and films. Starting with the earliest texts and accounts, the first two chapters explore wider historical and cultural contexts of the mutual influences between the cultures of the East and West. The subsequent three chapters discuss symptomatic examples of contemporary Anglophone films and novels and seek to show how various cultural flows have continued to mould Western images of East Asia. The book focuses on narratives that highlight Western subjects transforming or becoming reinvigorated under the East Asian influence and explores such issues as the impact of East Asian martial arts and religious practices on Western masculinities, East Asian motifs in utopian and dystopian fiction, and contemporary depictions of Asian-Western romantic relationships.

    Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sind die im Zeitraum zwischen 1245 und 1370 entstandenen europäischen Berichte über das mongolisch beherrschte Ostasien und die Funktion, die ihnen als Augenzeugenberichte in der Diskursivierung der Fremde zukam. Während die ersten Berichte der Franziskanermönche Johannes de Plano Carpini und Wilhelm von Rubruk noch ganz unter dem Eindruck der mongolischen Bedrohung Europas standen, wandelte sich mit Marco Polo das Bild der Mongolen nachhaltig und schuf damit Rauf für die positiv gefärbten Darstellungen des franziskanischen Missionars Odorico da Pordenone und den fingierten Bericht des englischen Ritters John Mandeville, der einen Wendepunkt in der narrativen Aneignung des Fremden bezeichnet. Das Buch geht der Frage nach, in welcher Weise die Kontaktsysteme der Diplomatie, des Handels und der Mission Wissen über das Fremde generierten, ob und wie sie es schriftlich fixierten und welchen Beschreieungsmustern die entstehenden Berichte folgten. In diesem Zusammenhang geht die Untersuchung nicht von der geläufigen Entgegensetzung von "realistischen" gegenüber "traditionellen" Berichten aus, sondern versucht durch die Verknüpfung von Kontaktsystemen und Beschreibungsmustern, in welcher Weise Erfahrung generiert und verarbeitet wurde. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Berichte nicht durch den bis in die jüngere Forschung immer wieder behaupteten Widerspruch zwischen überlieferten Topos und eigener Erfahrung gekennzeichnet, sondern dass Topos und Erfahrung eng miteinander verknüpfte Formen der Wirklichkeitskonstitution sind, die Beschreibung überhaupt erst ermöglichen.

    In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries China, Japan and the Spice Islands dazzled the English imagination as insatiable markets for European goods, and as vast, inexhaustible storehouses of spices and luxury wares. Robert Markley explores the significance of attitudes to the wealth and power of East Asia in rethinking conceptions of national and personal identity in seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century English literature. Alongside works by canonical English authors, this study examines the writings of Jesuit missionaries, Dutch merchants, and English and continental geographers, who directly contended with the challenges that China and Japan posed to visions of western cultural and technological superiority. Questioning conventional Eurocentric histories, Markley examines the ways in which the writings of Milton, Dryden, Defoe and Swift deal with the complexities of a world in which England was marginalized and which, until 1800, was dominated - economically at least - by the empires of the Far East.
