    Die mehrfach ausgezeichnete Autorin und begabte Malerin hat sich in diesem, bibliophil gestalteten Buch solcher Vögel angenommen, die entweder durch Verfolgung ausgerottet wurden (etwa Wandertaube, Riesenalk) oder durch Umweltveränderungen starken Gefährdungen ausgesetzt sind (so Wachtelkönig, Ziegenmelker u.a.). Kenntnis- und detailreich erzählt sie von Lebensweise und Bedrohungen, zitiert ältere Autoren und übersetzt längere Abhandlungen. Bestechend schöne Farbbilder schmücken den Text: berühmte Vogelmaler wie Audubon, Lear, Keulemans sind mit Werken vertreten, die Künstlerin Anita Albus schließt sich mit naturnahen Darstellungen ebenbürtig an. Ein Glossar und Literaturangaben fehlen nicht in diesem rundum gelungenen Buch - der (angemessen) hohe Preis lässt es in den Bibliotheken so selten sein, wie die Gefiederten des Inhalts.
