    Through an investigation of individual decision-making behavior and the impact it has on the perceived value of innovation, this thesis offers novel perspectives on key strategic management issues. We demonstrate how the value of innovation, when identified as a subjectively realized value by the consumer, specifically, perceived product benefits, can help identify the role of individual decision-making as well as behavioral factors guiding value creation of innovation. In the intersection between behavioral science and strategic management of innovation, these insights take the perspective of both the firm-side and demand-side of a value chain by identifying innovation performance as value created at the levels of the manufacturer, the salesperson and the consumer. Hence, this thesis contributes to the strategic management literature on innovation and value creation by answering the following research question: To what extent do decision-making heuristics at the individual level affect value creation at the firm-side and the demand-side of the value chain, and what management practices can facilitate decision-making for improved value creation? By attending to both the manufacturer and product market, the three papers constituting this thesis identify opportunities to augment value creation by exploring whether systematic behavioral bounds determine the likelihood of innovations to fulfill firms’ expectations for innovation performance. The thesis introduces specific behavioral strategies for the decisionmaking context that are critical to realizing business outcomes and identifying the key observations and challenges that managers face that affect value creation along dimensions of firm activities.

    Die Arbeit geht der Frage nach inwiefern die Capability Based View (CBV) einen Erklärungsbeitrag für die Verwaltungsforschung leisten kann. Dazu unterzieht sie die CBV einer kritischen Betrachtung und benennt die wichtigsten Merkmale dieses - nach wie vor unscharfen - Konzepts mit Bezug zum öffentlichen Sektor. Sie zeigt Parallelen von Ansätzen und Ergebnissen der Verwaltungsforschung zur CBV auf und stellt ihre generelle Verwendbarkeit in diesem Kontext fest. Ebenso diagnostiziert sie jedoch signifikanten Verbesserungsbedarf hinsichtlich der Klarheit des Konzepts. Eine Fokussierung auf den öffentlichen Sektor verspricht eher eine Konsolidierung und Weiterentwicklung der CBV als deren Erforschung im Privatsektor, da das multidimensionale und mehrstufige Verständnis von Performance im öffentlichen Sektor deutlich besser zur Wirkungslogik der CBV passt. Die Arbeit schließt mit einer Forschungsagenda, welche die wichtigsten Fragen zur Weiterentwicklung aufzeigt, und dem Appell für mehr qualitative empirische Forschung in diesem neuen Feld des Public Managements. -- organizational capabilities ; dynamic capabilities ; Fähigkeiten ; öffentliche Verwaltung The paper explores the explanatory potential of the Capability Based View (CBV) for research on public administrations. It does so by re-examining the – up till now – rather vague concept and sharpening it with a focus on the public sector. Parallels are drawn between the central propositions of the CBV and findings in public administration research. The focus lies on the link between capabilities and performance. Here, special attention is paid to the nexus between capabilities and performance, which originally fueled the interest in the CBV. It is concluded that the CBV is generally a fruitful approach for public administration research, yet with significant shortcomings in respect to its consolidation and clarity. The explanatory power of the CBV could actually be enhanced by applying it to the public sector: the multidimensional and -level understanding of performance in public sector organizations seems to match the propositions of the CBV far better than the one commonly used to evaluate performance in the private sector. The paper concludes with a research agenda summarizing the most important questions and a call for more qualitative empirical research in this emerging field within public management. -- organizational capabilities ; dynamic capabilities ; public management

    We propose a novel one-sector stochastic growth model, where producitivity growth follows a Markov-switching process with two regimes, and where households have generalized recursive smooth ambiguity preferences. The adopted class of preferences permits a three-way separation of risk aversion, ambiguity aversion, and the attitude toward intertemporal substitution. Ambiguity averse agents are ambiguous about the probability distribution of productivity growth. We show that in the absence of ambiguity aversion, the presence of a persistent high productivity regime combined with the elasticity of intertemporal substitution being greater than unity cannot generate a sizable risk premium. With a moderate coefficient of relative risk aversion, our model with ambiguity aversion can account for the low volatility of consumption growth observed in the data, and produce a high and volatile equity premium and a low and smooth risk-free rate.
